Chapter 613. Curse the Sun
Chapter 613: 613. Curse the Sun
"You didn’t have to wait for me," she said as she clung to him. "I can make my way to my room."
"Do you really think I would have left you? Curse the sun, it is the only reason I wasn’t outside with you."
Mauve blushed at this, leaning her weight onto him. She heard Jean’s footsteps and looked up the stairs to see him coming down. He seemed to be having a little trouble, but Mauve doubted it was any cause for concern.
"Jean," Jael called.
"Sire," Jean replied, halting his movements as he stiffly bent his head.
"Is there any news?" Jael asked.
"No, there isn’t any," he said, his voice sounding unsteady.
"Do you think this will work?"
"I-it is too early to know just yet, sire, but so far she doesn’t have any bad reaction to sunlight, and we will take that as a good sign. I will be sure to inform you if I do see some improvement in the coming days. I do hope to see some."
"Okay," Jael said stiffly. "Have a good rest."
Jean bowed again, "Thank you, Sire. You’re too kind."
"See you at sunset," Mauve said excitedly as Jael pulled her away.
He led her down the staircase, and she was in his room in no time. It didn’t take long for the servants to bring up her bathwater, and soon enough, she was cozied in bed ready to sleep.
Mauve let out a yawn, and Jael glanced at her. "You’re that tired?" He asked.
"I wouldn’t say that, but today was quite the day," she giggled and rolled up to him.
"You seem happy," he commented.
"Of course, I am. Is there any reason I shouldn’t be?" She asked, wiggling her brows at him.
Jael chuckled, "That’s impossible, not while you have me next to you."
She poked the side of his face, "You don’t have to sound so prideful."
"But I am right, aren’t I?" He asked, holding her gaze.
She scoffed and looked away from him. "No, you’re not."
Jael was on top of her before she realized it, his weight pinning her to the bed as he locked eyes with her. "I am not? Are you saying I am not enough reason for you to be happy?" He asked.
"I didn’t say that," she pouted. "You very well already know how happy I am that you’re here with me right now." She looked everywhere but his face.
"I know," he said and softly kissed her lips. He then rolled off her and pulled her closer to himself. "You should get some sleep."
Mauve glared at him, wondering if he was doing this on purpose, but she didn’t want it to appear as though she was insatiable and concentrated on trying to get some sleep.
Maybe it was because of how her night went, but she fell asleep pretty quickly and didn’t stir throughout until it was almost sunset. She woke up with a yawn, stretching her arms and almost stabbing Jael in the eye.
"Good day to you too," he said as he moved out of her reach.
"Oh no," she cried, pulling her arm to herself.
"It’s fine," he replied. "Looks like someone slept well."
Mauve nodded, "I did." She grinned at him and scooted closer. "How about you?" She asked.
"I always sleep great with you next to me," he said with a straight face and then poked her nose.
"Jael," she cried with a glare that quickly broke into a smile.
He winked at her and then asked, "What’s your plan for the day?"
"Well, I will most likely spend most of my time in the libraryâ€""
"With Louis?" Jael asked with a frown.
"If he is there. Why? Are you jealous?" She joked.
"And if I say yes?" He asked with a raised brow.
Mauve gasped, "You have no reason to be."
"Are you sure? You both seem annoyingly close, and he is telling you about childhood tales he has never mentioned to me."
"Did you ask?" Mauve asked.
"I told you there was never an appropriate time to, and I am more annoyed by the fact that you both are close enough for him to tell you something like that than the fact that he did. The less time you spend with him, the happier I will be."
Mauve grinned at him. She knew Jael meant every word, and that made her so happy. "I would avoid the library if that would make you feel better," she joked.
"I don’t want you to do that. You barely have enough places to keep you busy. I am not restricting your movement. It just pisses me off, and I think he wants to piss me off."
Mauve laughed, "You’re thinking too much about it. I don’t think that, and I do appreciate the company. It’s not like I can read the rest of the letters to keep myself busy; you won’t let me into your study," she complained.
"Now I am wishing I didn’t get rid of them. You’d have a reason to be stuck in my study, and I should ban him from the library."
"Really?" She laughed. "You’d let me do that just to keep me away from Louis?"
"I would," he replied matter-of-factly.
"Wow! Just out of curiosity, what did you do to the rest of the letters?" She asked.
"I burnt them," he said.
She gasped.
"I did tell you I would get rid of them; besides, they had gathered dust for too long, and I knew you would think about returning to them if I didn’t get rid of them."
"But I like to finish what I started," she mumbled.
"You can definitely start something else, and I assure you, I will let you finish," he smirked and pulled her on top of him. His fangs flashed at her even as he poked at her belly.
"Really?" She asked, twirling her hips. "Can I hold you to your word?"
Jael’s eyes glowed, and his nostrils flared. "Yes," he replied before crushing her lips with his. The next thing she knew, he was ripping at her clothes. Even though she had woken up early, Mauve almost didn’t make it to the first meal until it was almost over.
