Chapter 612. Not in Vain
Chapter 612: 612. Not in Vain
"You think it would help in figuring out how I contracted it and how I recovered from it?" She asked him with an intense stare.
Mauve didn’t have any issues with Jean’s question. Yes, it was a sad time in her life, but if this could help, she would be more than happy to share information. The problem was that she doubted she could be of much help.
"Yeah, but not only that, I am hoping I will be able to figure out a cure from the information I have been able to pick up and watching you heal. But so far, all I have come up with is not useful."
"Oh, it would be wonderful if we could get a cure. I will help in any way I can. Unfortunately, I don’t have many memories of my mother, let alone her time with the disease."
"Don’t worry about that. I am sure any information you may have will go a long way. Can you remember how it affected her?" Jean asked.
"Not really. I remember the white patches, and I think she was mostly fine until we got to the castle. After then, she just deteriorated, and I think she was dead in only a few months."
"Nothing else you can remember?" Jean pestered.
Mauve shook her head, "I am sorry I can’t be of much help," she said.
"No, it is cruel of me to ask you something like this. It is expected that you don’t remember; this must have been a very traumatic period for you. However, I hate to make this request, but if you do recall anything, don’t hesitate to let me know."
Mauve ground her teeth. Her mother’s death was something that she couldn’t forget, but she realized that all she actually remembered was her mother lying on the floor unmoving. She couldn’t remember the circumstances surrounding it. It made her a little sad, but happy at the same time; she didn’t want to remember terrible moments with her mother, and she knew the few moments before she died were the worst.
"Of course, I will let you know. I am really sorry I can’t help you with more."
"It is fine; you’re here, and I can get everything about how you’re feeling from you. Unfortunately, even with my observation, your recovery has been nothing short of a miracle. I can’t explain it."
"Really?" Mauve said with an equally shocked tone.
"The only explanation I can give is the fact that your mother might have been the reason you were able to recover."
Mauve frowned, her forehead creasing. "What does that mean?" She asked.
He looked shocked for a second and then shook his head. "I think the fact that your mother got the disease while she was pregnant with you is the reason you were able to heal from this."
Mauve blinked at Jean, "Are you sure about this?" She asked.
"No," he replied and looked away. "But it is the only explanation I have that makes sense, so you can say I am about sixty percent sure."
"That’s definitely good enough for me. Do you think I caught it from my mother?" She asked.
"No. Well, I don’t know. The White Disease isn’t supposed to be transmittable. There is no link between the victims, and no one knows how they get the disease. However, I can’t say the same about a pregnant woman. The worst part is it takes a while for it to start to show on the skin, and before that, there is no prior symptom. I did think about that though, maybe it was docile and was triggered by Vae’s incident, but that is highly unlikely. And if it was contagious, Greenham would be in serious trouble. Still, I find it a little hard to believe your mother caused it."
Mauve nodded, she didn’t have any response to Jean’s words, and more importantly, this was an emotional time for her. It was good to know her mother’s death wasn’t in vain. She had died so Mauve could survive this, and that was what she was going to believe.
"But if my mother didn’t give it to me, how did I get it?"
"That I don’t know, and not only that, it is a different strain. It could mean a lot of things, and I don’t want to think about themâ€""
"What could it mean?" She insisted.
Jean sighed, "It could mean the illness has evolved. We see that sometimes, and if that is the case, then we are in trouble. That’s why I am trying to find the cure as fast as I can, and I would really appreciate anything you can offer to help."
Mauve nodded. "I won’t hesitate to let you know if I have any new information," she said.
"Thank you, princess, I would really appreciate that. I think this is enough for today. Let’s do this again tomorrow morning, and if you notice anything either before sunset or after sunset, let me know." He said and stood to his feet.
She nodded and stood up too. He walked ahead of her, and she followed behind him. She had barely stepped out of the open door when Jael’s voice reached her ears.
"I thought you would never come down," his impatience slipped out, and she could tell he was not pleased.
She tried not to smile at this. "I am sorry for keeping you waiting."
She couldn’t see him, and she knew she wouldn’t be able to until she got down from the stairs. He was currently hiding behind the corner, away from the sun’s glare.
She heard the sound of Jean straining as he tried to close the door. He grunted, obviously having a hard time closing the door, and for a second, she thought she might need to help him, but she doubted she had the strength to be of any help.
She was still considering this when it shut; she almost gave a triumphant shout. She turned away from the door and walked down the stairs, only to see Jael at the bottom. He must have sped there the instant the door closed.
She smiled brightly at him, even though it was taking her vision a while to adjust to the candlelight after spending so long in the sunlight. He stretched out his hand and pulled her to his chest.
