Chapter 614: 614. Unmagical Magic
Louis strolled into the library, his presence catching Mauve off guard. "Why am I not surprised you’re here?" he quipped.
"You’re late," Mauve retorted, closing the book she held.
"I am late?" Louis chuckled. "I don’t remember setting an appointment." He plopped down onto a nearby seat.
Mauve’s frustration bubbled up. "Would you stop dangling the offer in front of me and then taking it away? It’s not fair."
"That’s not true. I am telling you all I know. It’s not my fault we were interrupted the last time, but I do intend to teach you this time around. I doubt it would be much because theoretical knowledge is different from actual experience."
"Yeah, but I am sure with your big brain and my learning ability, we can figure this out," she replied.
"Big brain?" He laughed. "I am glad we both agree, but I sincerely doubt your learning ability."
She gave him an unimpressed look. "I take that back."
"My bad. We could start with the spell I taught you, the one you couldn’t finish last time," he stood to his feet and started walking towards the books.
"Where are you going?" She asked.
"To get the spell book, except you know it by heart which I highly doubt," he replied smugly.
Of course, she didn’t. If she did, she knew she would have tried to say it, but she could barely remember what the spell had looked like, let alone the pronunciation. She wondered if it was because so much time had passed.
"It’s in the library?" She asked, almost falling off her seat.
"Of course, I didn’t take it out. I just put it somewhere you wouldn’t think to check," he replied smugly.
"Why would you do that?" She asked, annoyed. If she had known it was here, she would have done a thorough search.
"I think you already know the answer to that," his volume dropped as he walked further away from her.
She was tempted to rush after him and see where he hid the book, but she knew it would be a waste of time. He would just hide it somewhere else. Besides, she didn’t want to do anything that would tick him off from giving her the lessons now. She could be obedient to get what she wanted.
He returned with the book in hand. The hardcover was instantly recognizable. The fact that he had been able to hide this book was pretty impressive, but this was a huge library and there were only so many places she could check.
Mauve adjusted in her seat as she tried to contain her excitement. He placed the book on the table and sat back in his seat. She leaned for a closer look, itching to hold the book in her hand.
"Stay," he said, stretching his hand.
"Stay?" She jerked her head at him.
"Stay," he said, stretching his hand again as if commanding a dog.
"Excuse me?" She jerked her head at him, eyes narrowing.
"Relax, I just want you to calm down. You won’t learn anything if you’re this jumpy," Louis replied a hint of amusement in his voice.
Mauve took a deep breath and leaned back, forcing herself to relax. "Alright, I’m calm. Now can we start?"
Louis nodded, flipping open the book. "The spell I taught you last time was just a beginner’s incantation, technically."
"What do you mean by technically?" She asked with a huge frown on her face. Louis sounded like he was omitting a lot of information.
"Nothing important," he said as he opened the book.
She frowned but didn’t push. She was more interested in what was in front of her than what he was keeping from her. Last time, Mill had said there was a smell of fire. She wondered why he had started with a fire spell, but she didn’t know a thing about magic and figured he knew what he was doing.
"So, do you want to try again?" he asked, turning the open book so it was right in front of her.
Mauve stared at the familiar page and smiled. Finally, it took a long time coming. "Of course, you know I am, but are you sure this is a good idea? This is a fire spell, isn’t it?" She asked.
"Yeah, it is," he responded. "Why?" He raised a brow.
"We are surrounded by books. What if I start a fire?" She asked in horror.
Louis looked at her with an unbelievable expression and suddenly burst out laughing. "I am very certain we don’t have to worry about that. You’ve basically never used magic and you think you can start a fire big enough to burn the books here…" he paused to laugh again. "Even veteran magic users would have a hard time. Don’t overestimate yourself and don’t raise your hopes. Magic isn’t as magical as you may think."
"What does that even mean?" She asked.
"You’ll find out. Just take it slow. You’ll need spells to draw out your magic if you have and the output depends on your innate ability. Practice might improve but not so greatly."
"So, I should lower my expectations and just do what I can?" She asked.
"Alright then go on," he said, handing her a folded piece of paper.
Mauve couldn’t help but wonder where he had pulled it out from. She hadn’t seen anything. The paper was folded, and she slowly opened it.
"Or should I leave it folded?" She asked, pausing halfway to ask him.
"Whichever works for you, really. If you can start a fire, that would be good. It doesn’t matter if it is folded or not. It should be easier with paper since it’s flammable. Just concentrate on the paper and read the spell. Good luck."
"Okay, I can do this."
She shut her eyes tightly and then opened them. She stared at the open book in front of her. Her eyes ran through the words, and she said them in her mind.
"You have to say it out loud," Louis said to her.
"I know, I just wanted to be sure I got the pronunciation right. Stop interrupting."
"My bad, carry on," he leaned back and folded his arms, watching her.
Mauve opened her mouth, and just as before, she didn’t feel anything different, but she made sure to concentrate on the paper as she read the spell. She got to the end of the spell, and nothing happened.
