Chapter 611. Used to the Dark
Chapter 611: 611. Used to the Dark
Mauve watched Jael go after exchanging a few words with Jean. She hadn’t heard what was said as she wasn’t close enough to them, and her plants mostly had her attention. She wanted to be done as soon as possible.
"Princess," Jean said as he got close enough.
"Good morning, Jean." She looked at him with a smile on her face as she watered the last of the plants.
"I see you’re quite busy this morning. What a lovely garden you have."
"Thank you, Jean." She placed the watering can in the corner and wiped her hands on her dress. Not a good move, but she didn’t want to risk the chance of getting dirt on Jean.
"Is that poppies?" He asked as he got closer, pointing to a set of plants.
"You recognize them from just the leaves?" She asked with surprise in her voice.
"Yes, it is my wife’s favorite flower," he responded.
"She has great taste," Mauve said with a bright smile. "I am sorry you can’t see them bloom."
Jean smiled, "That’s not your fault. They are out of season."
Mauve nodded, agreeing that he did know enough about poppies. "I am sure you must miss her," She said.
Jean shrugged, "I haven’t been here too long. The last time I was here, I spent longer."
"I am sure you wouldn’t want to miss any moment with her, especially now that she is with child."
Jean nodded, "I would be lying if I said I didn’t want to go back, but your health is important, and as soon as I am assured that you will do fine without my presence, I shall be on my way."
Mauve nodded and smiled. "Thank you for all that you have done."
She winced as she looked up; she had been so distracted she didn’t notice the sun was already this high up in the sky.
"It’s a beautiful morning," Jean commented.
Mauve nodded, "Absolutely. I haven’t seen the sunrise in so long; I kinda miss it," she said with a soft smile.
"That’s a bit sad. You should step out in the sun more often. I know you live with vampires, but you’re still human, and for us, the sun is a big part of our existence."
Mauve glanced at Jean and looked away from him. It wasn’t that she was trying to be a vampire, but she wanted to get used to the dark and to do that, she would have to spend more time in it. However, as much as she didn’t want to admit it, she found that it didn’t matter how long she spent in the dark; she wouldn’t be a part of it.
"I suppose you’re right," she mumbled.
"How do you feel?" Jean asked. "Does the sun bother you?"
Mauve shook her head, but considering most of her body was covered, it was hard to say. Her arms were the only thing exposed to the sun, and that was because she rolled her sleeves up. Maybe next time she wouldn’t wear such clothing.
"Not really, but I don’t think it can get through all my clothes," she said with a laugh.
"It can, and I do believe it is best to do this clothed on. This is merely an experiment. I do not know if this would work or not, but I pray it does."
"So far, the only thing left of the illness are the scars. If they never fade, I will get used to them eventually; you don’t have to press yourself so hard," she encouraged.
He smiled at her, "You have a habit of cheering people up," Jean said. "Thank you, princess. Your words make me feel better. However, I worry that the illness might return if we don’t completely get rid of the white patches. There is no reason why you should still have them, and the fact that you do is a little worrisome."
"It’s fading; it’s just taking a little too long. I will take that as a good sign. Besides, this is the best development I have gotten since I fell sick. There is no point looking at the dark side when it is already so bright."
"You are right," Jean said and looked away.
Mauve smiled at him and looked to the sky again. The bright blue color reminded her of Jael’s eyes, and she couldn’t help but wonder how much longer they would be here for him to run out of patience. She giggled at the thought.
"Princess," Jean suddenly called, and Mauve slowly turned her head to look at him.
"Yes," she replied, but her throat immediately became dry as she saw the look on his face. The air tensed, and she adjusted on her feet.
"Want to take a seat?" He asked and pointed to the bench.
She nodded, "That’s definitely a good idea," she said and started walking towards it.
She sat down, and Jean sat down with her. She thought he looked a little anxious. "Is something wrong?" She heard herself ask when he didn’t say anything after a while.
"Not exactly," he mumbled. "I just have a few questions to ask."
"I am all ears. I will answer your questions to the best of my abilities," she grinned at him.
"They are personal questions," he said.
"About my illness?" She asked with a frown. "Or something else?"
"Oh no, no, no. Nothing of that sort. This only concerns the White Disease. I apologize if I made it seem otherwise."
"No, I just didn’t understand. What would you like to know?" She asked.
"It is about your mother’s death and her time with the illness. I know this was a difficult time for you, and you were a child. You don’t have to respond if you don’t want to, but I would really appreciate it if you did."
"You think it would help in figuring out how I contracted it and how I recovered from it?" She asked him with an intense stare.
