Chapter 610: 610. Drowning the Petals
Mauve walked with Jael as they made their way up the staircase after the last meal. The meal had gone off without a hitch. Well, if something had been wrong, she didn’t notice.
They soon got to the top of the stairs, the floor where their rooms were located, and Mauve stopped walking. She turned to look at Jael. "You don’t have to go with me to the rooftop," she said, trying to pull her hand out of Jael’s grip, but he didn’t let her.
"There is still a couple of minutes before dawn, and Jean should be here any minute now. I am not leaving you alone until he is here," he replied, his gaze unwavering.
Mauve knew she wouldn’t be able to sway him, and frankly, that wasn’t what she wanted to do anyway. She just didn’t want him to get caught in the sun.
She nodded and said with a sigh, admitting her defeat, "As you like."
"Glad we can come to an agreement," he said and started walking again, pulling Mauve with him.
She got to the stairs leading to the rooftop, and Jael pulled away her hand that was wrapped around his elbow and held onto her palm instead. He walked up the stairs with her behind him, and she heard the bolt slide back as he unlocked the door.
She heard a loud sound as he pulled the door open, and Mauve blinked at the gust of wind that hit her face even with him standing in front of her. He took a step forward, and she followed after him until they were out the door. Mauve looked up at the sky, and her face broke into a smile.
Dawn was fast approaching, but the sun wasn’t out yet. She could no longer see the moon and the stars. The gray of the night sky was slowly but surely turning to the blue of the morning.
The morning breeze had the smell of dew and a mix of her flowers attached to it. It was a very nostalgic smell and she reveled in it for a few moments.
She looked at Jael and caught him staring at her. "It’s beautiful," she said and slowly looked back up at the sky.
"Yeah," Jael replied, but he didn’t look at the sky.
He tugged on her palm as he walked closer to the garden, and she followed him without a moment’s thought. Because of how bright it was getting, she didn’t need light to get a better look at her garden. She could see it clear enough to go about her business.
"You did great work here," Jael commented.
"Thank you," she grinned.
"It looks better than the last time I was here."
"Of course it does, you almost never come here," she scolded. "You wouldn’t be so surprised if you came here more often."
He looked at her and said, "Is that an invitation?"
"You don’t need an invitation. You can come here whenever you want."
"I’d only do that if you come with me," he replied.
"Okay," she smiled and pulled her hand out of his grasp.
She pulled up the sleeves of her dress, wondering if maybe she should have changed before coming here. Mill would not be pleased if she got dirt on her dress.
She needed to water the plants and maybe do some trimming, but there was no need for anything extensive. She was sure she would be able to do that without messing up her dress.
"Do you need my help?" Jael offered.
"What?" She jerked her head in his direction with a dumbfounded look on her face.
He gave her an unimpressed look, "What does that mean? Of course, I want to help."
She giggled, "I know. There should be a watering can in the corner; Mack always fills it up for me. I want to snip some of the leaves and the tip of the branches off the flowers, and you can water them after I finish each section," she responded.
Jael nodded, and she watched him walk to where she pointed. He bent down, and from the sound of the metal, she could tell he had found the right item.
She turned her attention to the row in front of her and quickly got to work. She didn’t have to do much snipping and was done in only a couple of minutes.
"You can water this," she said.
The words were barely out of her mouth when she watched Jael nearly drown her flowers.
"Jael!" She screamed, rushing towards him. "That’s too much."
"It is? I was going to sprinkle, but the soil looked a little dry, and I thought it needed more water."
Mauve’s lips formed a thin line as she tried to hold back her laugh. "Good to know your equivalent of more water is literally drowning the petals," she chuckled and tried to take the watering can from him.
"I know what not to do now," he said and held firmly onto it.
Was he embarrassed? It was hard to tell as he wouldn’t look at her. She tried to pull harder on the watering can, but Jael didn’t seem like he had any plans to let it go.
"If you insist," she replied and reluctantly let go of the watering can.
"I insist, I can water plants, okay? I just thought more water would be better," he further explained.
"I didn’t say you couldn’t. It’s not that much trouble for me, so you don’t have to force yourself."
Jael finally looked at her, and Mauve burst out laughing. "I am sorry, I will go trim the rest of the flowers." She was still laughing as she walked away.
Jael was careful about watering the flowers, and she could see him trying not to pour out more water. Just as they were about done, she heard footsteps and turned to see Jean walking through the door, just in time too. Any second later, and she would have started to worry about Jael.
"Jean is here," she said to him.
"I know," he replied without looking up from the flowers he was currently spraying with water.
"I can take it from here," she said. "The sun would be out any minute now."
He looked reluctant for only about a second, and then he nodded his head and handed the can to her. "I would be right at the bottom of the stairs."
