The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 607. Magical
Chapter 607: 607. Magical
Louis paused for a second as he thought about what she asked. "I would have smelled the blood and woken up," he said.
"What are the chances of that?" She asked. "You were what, four? Three? If you didn’t wake up until they came to get you, I doubt blood would have woken you up. That would also explain why you don’t remember because you didn’t actually see it."
It wasn’t that she disagreed with him; she knew firsthand just how sensitive vampires’ senses were. Jael could hear her breathing change while he was fast asleep. However, she didn’t think it was the same for a pretty young child. Maybe it was, and she was wrong, but it was definitely an angle to consider.
Louis blinked at her. "But that doesn’t explain every other thing," he replied.
"True, but it certainly answers the question of why you can’t remember, and I am sure that helps."
Louis paused again. Mauve couldn’t tell if he agreed with her or if he was thinking of reasons to disagree with her.
After a few seconds of him not saying anything, she added, "Don’t tell me you have never thought about it."
"Not that. I was pretty young at the time. I couldn’t exactly discuss it, and I guess by the time I could, too much time had passed. It also didn’t help that all the memories I had from the incident were things I picked up from what the adults discussed."
Mauve nodded her agreement. "I am also sure they tried to keep as much as possible from you."
"Yeah, there’s always that. However, I’ll keep believing magic is involved."
Mauve nodded without disputing Louis’s words. She thought it was peculiar that even though Louis was logical about everything, this was the one thing he wanted to be magical about.
She didn’t hate it. His parents’ death was something that left a huge scar on his soul, and it didn’t look like it would fade any time soon, even after over a century.
Mauve wondered if Jael also felt this strongly about his parents’ deaths. They had maybe two conversations about it, and it didn’t exactly go very well. She had to find out his mother’s name from Louis.
She did want to ask him about it, but she didn’t want to dig up any old wounds. It was an aspect she was willing to wait for as long as she needed to find out.
It was also sad to realize that Palers took more from vampires than they ever made it seem. Things had been almost peaceful for her since her first and last encounter, and it was easy to forget that just outside these walls was dangerous.
"Wait," she suddenly said. "How is Kieran your brother? He is at least a quarter of a decade younger than you."
Louis laughed. "I am not telling."
"I actually thought you two were biological brothers, but with the story, you just told me, that’s practically impossible. Is he your cousin?" She asked.
"You can ask him. He will tell you if he wants to," Louis shrugged.
"How can I ask him?" She asked.
She wasn’t that friendly with Kieran; they weren’t enemies, but she obviously couldn’t ask him personal questions. Besides, she didn’t think it was a relationship that didn’t make sense, as vampires were pretty particular about lineage and wouldn’t have accepted Kieran if he wasn’t actually a Lord.
"Well, I guess it is something you would never know," he grinned at her, obviously enjoying the fact that he was keeping the information from her.
"I will ask Jael," she said stubbornly.
Louis shook his head. "I doubt he will tell you, but I beg to differ. These days the Primus has been unpredictable when it comes to matters that concern you."
She opened her mouth to argue with his words, but the library doors were immediately thrown open, and Jael walked in. The first thing she noticed was his expression. It was a little hard to read, and she wondered if something was wrong.
"Jael," she said, standing to her feet.
"I guess that’s my cue to leave," Louis also said as he pushed himself off his seat.
"But we aren’t done," Mauve replied.
"You’ve learned enough for one day if you ask me. I’ll tell you the rest later."
"What rest?" Jael asked, his thunderous voice swallowing every other sound in the library.
"You know you don’t have to know everything," Louis said as he walked to the exit. He walked to the doors without looking back and was gone, the sound of the doors closing sealing his exit.
Jael stopped in front of Mauve. His hair was in a ponytail as usual. A few strands had fallen loose, but he seemed to be unbothered by them as they rested on his face.
His blue eyes held her brown ones as he stared intently. However, Mauve found that she still couldn’t read his expression. Louis said he had to talk to Kieran, and she could guess that he came straight from there, but by the looks of things, it was hard to tell if the meeting went well or not.
"What were you talking about?" He asked.
She could tell immediately that he would accept nothing else but the truth. She couldn’t believe Louis left her alone to deal with this. He could have at least said something she could go off on.
It wasn’t that she had a problem telling Jael, but that she didn’t know if she could tell him. She knew magic was completely out of it. If she mentioned it to Jael, she would most likely never hear about it from Louis again.
"I can see the wheels spinning in your head. Are you trying to lie to me?" He asked, his gaze darkening a little.
He was in a bad mood. "No, I wouldn’t dare," she mumbled. "He was telling me about his parents’ death." Her voice was low as she spoke.
"His parents’ death?" Jael confirmed.
