Chapter 606: 606. A Wizard

"What?" Mauve asked. She couldn’t imagine what it must have been like for Louis to watch his parents get murdered.

"You don’t have to be so dramatic. I don’t remember anything."

"Still," she paused for a bit. "It must have been awful."

"Maybe, but that wasn’t the most troubling part."

"What was the troubling part?" She asked with a soft frown.

"I couldn’t remember, not the incident, not how I got to my parents’ room, and certainly not what had killed them."

"It’s expected. You were not only a child but no one wants to remember something like that."

"Nah, it’s very odd. I remember things from when I was a baby, to not remember a single thing for something so important is even more scary than the incident itself."

Mauve adjusted in her seat. "You don’t remember a single thing."

"No, absolutely nothing. It doesn’t make any sense, and it supposedly happened a few minutes before dawn, but they weren’t found until almost noon. According to the maid, she wanted to check on me sometime during sleep time as I had a habit of wandering, and she couldn’t find me in my room, which led to a search and the discovery of my parents’ bodies."

Mauve gasped. "Where were you then?"

"Under the bed, which was a good thing as the window had been broken and sunlight was streaming in. So my parents weren’t only slashed open but burnt to a crisp. Well, that’s an exaggeration."

"That sounds awful," Mauve said with a loud gasp.

"I suppose it was."

"Don’t be so dismissive."

"It was a long time ago."

"Was there no concrete evidence that they were attacked by a paler?" She asked.

"There was," Louis said with a shrug. "But a lot of things didn’t make sense. Why wasn’t I attacked? Why didn’t anyone hear anything? A window was broken, for goodness sake. Vampires are known for their sharp senses; at least one person could have heard the sound, and even if they didn’t, they should have smelled the blood. It didn’t make any sense that all that went unnoticed and decades later it still didn’t make any sense."

The hairs on Mauve’s skin stood on end, even though it was years agoâ€"as Louis kept repeatingâ€"Mauve could still feel his anger.

Mauve couldn’t blame him; the circumstances around his parents’ death did seem a little suspicious. But there is also the fact that he was a kid then; his interpretation of the situation may have been a bit altered.

Mauve winced as she remembered her mother’s death. The only thing she could clearly remember was the white patches on her skin.

She shook her head as she stopped herself from thinking about it. She hasn’t thought about it in years and she intended to keep it that way. She wondered if that was why she couldn’t remember her mother’s face.

"The details of the incident are forever muddled in my head, and there is absolutely nothing I can do about it, and I am greatly convinced Magic is involved," he added.

"Magic?" Mauve asked with a frown. "Are you sure?"

"There’s no explanation, and this fostered my curiosity for magic, but even among vampires, it was sort of a fairy tale. However, there is a fact that is common knowledge: vampires can’t use magic, at least not the same way humans can."

"This is a known fact?" Mauve asked.

"Yeah, and going through the books in the library didn’t help either. They didn’t tell me anything other than the existence of magic, which I already knew. All I had at my disposal were spell books I couldn’t use."

Mauve nodded at his words. It definitely explained why she couldn’t find anything of use. There was nothing to find, which meant if she had to learn anything, it would be from Louis.

"Is that why you left?" She asked.

He paused for a second and stared into nothingness. "Maybe," he mumbled.

"Did you find anything?" She asked.

"About their deaths? No. It was already a century by the time I left; the chances of finding anything at this point were practically zero."

Mauve looked at Louis in horror. It would always be hard to associate his face with his age.

"Would you not do that?" He yelled at her.

"I am sorry, I keep forgetting you’re archaic," she commented.

"That doesn’t mean what you think it does," he glared at her. "And I will let you know that I am pretty young in vampire terms."

"Yeah, if you say so."

He gave her an unimpressed look. "Nevertheless, that’s the story behind everything. It fueled my obsession with magic and finding out all I can about it."

"You told me there was nothing to tell!" She glared at him. "That there was no particular reason why you left, that you were tired of staying in one place.

"That’s also part of the reason I left. You think I am going to pour out my heart to you three days after meeting you."

"You promised!"

"And I kept it. I did leave because I was tired of being stuck. If it was because of the questions surrounding my parents’ death, I would have left sooner. I waited a whole century to leave."

"Then you left for almost four decades. That’s twice my age. What did you do?" She asked.

"The obvious," he said and gave her a blank stare. "You know, some days I think I made it up because I don’t want to admit my parents were killed in such a lowly manner, but I guess it is an answer I would never get. Besides, it’s definitely cooler to be killed by a wizard than a Paler breaking into your house."

"Did you sleepwalk?" Mauve suddenly asked.

"What?" Louis asked. "What has that got to do with anything?"

"You said the maid came to check on you to be sure you didn’t wander. Were you prone to sleepwalking?" She asked.

"Yeah. Occasionally," he reluctantly admitted.

"Doesn’t that mean you may have sleepwalked into your parents’ room after they were attacked and instinctively went under their bed because of sunlight?" Mauve asked.

She didn’t think her question made any sense, but it would definitely explain why Louis couldn’t remember, as he seemed to be more bothered about this fact.
