Chapter 605: 605. Mauve’s Choice
"Listen to me for a second," she muttered, clutching the book to her chest.
"No," he replied and stretched out his hand. "Hand it over!"
"Just listen to me," she said, pressing it to her chest so he wouldn’t be able to pull the book out of her grip.
"Mauve," he dragged out her name, urging her to hand over the book.
"Come on, I have a good reason for this," she explained.
"I doubt it," he responded.
"Only because you haven’t listened."
He narrowed his eyes at her. "If your reason makes no sense, as I suspect it would, you will hand over the book."
She glared at him. "Fine," she replied.
"Okay then, I am listening." He sat down on the other side of the desk with his arms folded as he stared her down.
"You don’t have to glare at me," she mumbled as she pulled the book away from her chest, but she didn’t place it on the table. He might say he wouldn’t take the book until he heard what she had to say, but there was no reason to tempt him.
"You’re running out of time," he responded but didn’t change his stare.
"Well, first off, I am not sick anymore." Mauve didn’t miss Louis staring her up and down as if disagreeing with her sentence. "And if we should go at your pace of waiting till I heal, my skin has no plans to heal."
To emphasize her point, she pulled up her sleeves to show him just what she meant. She looked at Louis, and his expression didn’t change.
"I am not asking that you teach Magic right now, but at least give me something. It could be a breakdown of what you already know, but leaving me in the dark is not good for my thoughts." When he didn’t reply, she asked, "What are you doing here anyway?"
"What do you mean?" He frowned, sitting upright. The question seemed to pull him out of his thoughts.
"You know what I mean; most times you help out with the squad either for their training or dealing with Palers."
"Oh, that," He answered nonchalantly.
"Yeah, that."
"They don’t need my help today. Well, it’s sort of a day off. Can I call it that?" He paused.
"A day off?" She asked when he didn’t pick up. "Why?"
"It’s more like a break to plan and regroup. Jael is talking to Kieran and what they could probably do."
Mauve frowned, her focus changing. "Why?" She asked. "What exactly is wrong?"
Louis leaned back in his seat. "Again with the endless questions."
"Maybe if you answered any, it wouldn’t be so endless."
"Yeah, you’re probably right," he admitted, much to Mauve’s shock.
"I am glad you agree."
"Yeah, so pick one. Would it be what I know about the existence of magic or what’s going on with the squad in their dealings with the Palers?"
Mauve looked at Louis, dumbfounded. First off, this was better than she hoped, but secondly, he was being a little bit cruel as he knew she was equally interested in both subjects.
However, undeniably, if she pestered well enough, she could get the latter from a different source. Unfortunately, that would probably be harder than trying to convince Louis to teach her magic now.
"You’re mean," she said. "Can’t you just tell me both?"
"No, discussing any of the said subjects doesn’t benefit me in any way, and I am not about to take a double loss."
"You won’t be losing," she mumbled.
"I would. Knowledge about magic isn’t common information, and there is personal information linked with it."
"And that’s a bad thing."
"Not necessarily, but I like to hold on to all the cards."
"What about the second part? There is nothing to lose if you tell me. It’s not like it involves you personally since you’re being so stingy about information."
"Yeah, but I know Jael doesn’t want you to know. If you were really that curious, you would ask him, but since you still don’t know, it means you asked him and he didn’t tell you. I would lose in this aspect by incurring Jael’s wrath. You see how this is a lose-lose situation for me."
Mauve gave him an unimpressed look. "Maybe you’re right, but I am sure Jael wouldn’t be mad if I said I bullied the information out of you."
Louis laughed. "Like you could bully me."
"I could," she protested.
"Enough argument. Pick one or you lose both, and you will agree to not go out of your way to check for more information unless I bring it your way. Such behavior would be considered a breach of our agreement, and everything magic-related would cease."
Mauve sighed; she should be grateful Louis was willing to give her something. She knew if she pushed him, she would lose everything.
"I’d like to know about magic, please," she mumbled.
He smirked. "Even though the information about what’s going on with Palers is more interesting."
"Don’t push it," Mauve scolded.
"Fine, I will tell you what I know. My parent’s death wasn’t caused by Palers. It was something else, something I still don’t understand to this day."
Mauve tried not to look too surprised, but it wasn’t very easy. When Louis said it was personal, she didn’t think it was this personal.
"I am sorry for your loss," she mumbled.
He chuckled, "That’s what you picked from that. Don’t apologize. It was a long time ago. I was under five when it happened."
"Still, I know what it means to lose a parent, let alone two. It doesn’t matter how long…" Mauve paused, wondering if this was news to Louis.
"Don’t worry, I know," he smirked.
"You know?" She asked.
"Is there really anything I don’t know?"
She glared at him and changed the subject. "What do you mean they weren’t attacked by Palers?"
She didn’t know the circumstances surrounding Louis’s parents’ deaths. She had never thought it was something she could ask about.
"They were attacked in their sleep and bled to death without ever waking up. The worst part is, I think I saw it, but I have no recollection of it."
