Chapter 597. Wasn’t Discontented
Chapter 597: 597. Wasn’t Discontented
The silence that stretched out in the library was loud enough to deafen Mauve. Her stomach knotted. She tried to read Louis’ expression but it was hard to guess what he was thinking.
"May I ask why you’d want to know?" He asked, his gaze on her face was just as intense as his voice.
"Well, aside from the obvious—" she rolled her eyes at him. "You did say my stand can change with vampires."
"And you think a child would do that?" Louis spat out.
She shrank. "Don’t sound like you hate the idea so much."
"I apologize, that was not my
intention," he sighed. "A child won’t change their stance and that’s on the chance that it is possible."
"You don’t think it is?" She asked softly.
"It isn’t!" He said adamantly. "Female Vampires can survive childbirth because of their healing abilities. There has only been one recorded death and that is Mill and Mack’s mother. Considering she had to give birth twice in a row, it is no surprise. A human wouldn’t survive that."
"You’re saying I would die if I were to take in?"
"I am saying you won’t take in. I think the human body most definitely recognizes the risk and stops the pregnancy from happening. I have never seen a situation where a human takes in for a vampire and I assure you, it’s not from lack of trying."
Mauve’s eyes watered and Louis’s expression turned sour.
"I apologize, I shouldn’t have said it like that. I should have been more aware of your feelings."
She shook her head, "You have nothing to apologize for." She said with her chin high so the tears wouldn’t fall.
"I do, I was only thinking about the consequences."
"It is fine, really. Would you drop it?" She requested. "Thank you for answering my questions about—"
The sound of the library doors opening drew both their attention to it. Mauve tried not to show shock at Jael’s presence.
She turned away from him and wiped at her face hoping he wouldn’t notice. She stood up immediately.
"Jael," she called, her voice sounding forced. "What are you doing here?" She asked. "I thought you were out in the fields with the guards."
"I was," he said as he crossed the room to where she stood. He got to them in quick steps. It was weird to watch him walk in such a brisk manner without any effort.
"Are you done?" Mauve didn’t like the way she was forcing the conversation. She also didn’t like Jael’s stare.
He didn’t even glance at Louis, she was worried he could tell she was on the verge of tears. She was more worried he would ask what was wrong and she would burst into tears.
He didn’t, instead he gently pulled her into his arms. "Hope Louis wasn’t a nuisance?" He whispered.
Mauve buried her face in his chest and slowly shook her head.
"Why do you always assume I am the problem?" Louis asked with an annoyed tone to his voice. She was sure his expression mirrored this but she knew better than to raise her head to look.
Jael didn’t respond. "Come with me," he whispered.
"Where to?" She asked without looking up.
"You will see," he replied.
She could hear the amused tone in his voice. She laughed, "Let me guess if I insist you will say I don’t like surprises."
"That’s not true," Jael said. "Would you come with me?" He asked.
She nodded, "Of course."
"Good," he responded and pulled her away from his embrace to hold her hand. Mauve felt him squeeze her palm as he led her out of the library.
"Did you hear my conversation with Louis?" She asked. It was the only explanation she could think of for his actions.
"Nope," he said with a straight face "But I could tell he was being a dork as usual. I don’t get why you like him so much."
Mauve laughed, "I wouldn’t say a dork. Besides, he is nice to me."
"Nice? Hah! Say something true."
"He is. I mean you are nice to me and a lot of people would beg to differ."
"Well, I have never claimed to be nice." He grinned.
"Don’t say that proudly," she chuckled as he leaned into him. "Are you still mad at him? You completely ignored him."
"He was pissing you off. I could smell your tears as soon as I walked in."
"I wasn’t crying," she whispered and looked to her feet.
"You were," he insisted. "What did he say to you?"
"Maybe you are right," she chuckled. "Nothing of consequence."
He held her gaze a little and then looked away. "If you say so."
She wanted to tell him but she didn’t want to talk about it and the fact that he was asking but wasn’t insisting on it meant he must have heard some of the conversation.
Mauve’s stomach churned a little but it was hard to know if it was from pain or something else.
She wanted to know what Jael felt about this. If it hurt him just as much as it did her?
She wanted to know more than anything but she was also afraid he would say something like they had each other and that was all that mattered.
She knew he would say that but to her, it wasn’t enough. She knew she would carry his child at the risk of her own life in a heartbeat.
It hurt more than she would ever admit and she knew no matter how many times she heard it, she wouldn’t get used to it.
She blinked as she realized he was taking her out of the castle. Mauve blinked, she looked up at Jael.
"Only briefly," he said with a stern gaze. "And we aren’t going past the castle’s front yard."
She grinned brightly, feeling very giddy. "That’s more than enough for me."
"You get excited at the tiniest of things," he said but there was no anger or disgust in his voice. More like he sounded disappointed as if he wanted to give her more but couldn’t.
Mauve watched the guards bow as they threw the doors open and she let her mind rest on what was in front of her.
She couldn’t do anything about what she had found out but she could at least try to deal with it. She was happy with Jael, maybe a little greedy but she wasn’t discontented.
