Chapter 582: 582. Act a Little Brave

"I am listening," Mauve said, recovering quickly. "What happened?"

She wasn’t about to let this subject go. For some reason, she had to know. Perhaps she was just being greedy.

Jael averted his gaze. "I may have confronted him about telling you I would have to get a mate."

"You did?" Mauve inquired. She appeared genuinely shocked.

"Yeah, I don’t like the fact that he said that to you. He shouldn’t make assumptions on my behalf."

Mauve smiled at him, she couldn’t even be mad. "Is that it?" She asked.

"Yeah, but I don’t think I said it like that."

She laughed, "As expected."

Mauve could tell that her sickness was taking a toll on Jael. His eyes looked heavy and she could clearly see the sadness in them. She could almost bet he hadn’t been getting enough sleep.

She wanted to give him a big hug, to wrap her tiny arms around him. She didn’t have anything comforting to say and not to mention that she was also scared but for him, she was more than willing to act a little brave.

"Are you ready to go to bed?" She asked, looking up at him with bright eyes.

"Yeah," he said, his eyes roaming her face before coming to rest on her eyes that were looking up at him.

He took off his shirt and moved to lie down beside her. He got comfortable and she clung to him, grimacing as her hot skin touched his cold one.

"Isn’t this uncomfortable?" He asked as their skin touched but he did not push her away.

She shook her head and cozied up to him once more. "I am not cold."

"Are you sure? I can put my shirt back on if it helps."

Mauve shook her head, "No." She needed to get as close to him as she possibly could.

She felt as though she could touch his soul if their skin touched. It was a silly thought but one she was willing to hold.

"Okay," he replied as adjusted so she could rest her head on top of his arm.

"I miss you," she whispered, her breath hot against his chest.

"What do you mean?" He asked. "I am right next to you."

"You know what I mean," she replied, glad that her temperature was already high so the heat coming from her cheeks didn’t feel any different.

Jael chuckled, it was a throaty sound that made Mauve’s ears tingle. "Get well and I assure you, you won’t catch a break."

"That sounds like a threat," she whispered with a soft laugh.

"No," he replied. "It is a promise. Now get some sleep."

Mauve nodded and shut her eyes as she tried to fall asleep. It didn’t take too long and she knew it had a lot to do with being wrapped in his arms.

Mauve woke up on top of Jael. Somehow during her sleep, she had managed to move from the bed completely and was now on top of Jael.

"You look like you slept well," he said as their eyes met.

"Did I sleep like this the whole time?" She asked in shock as she looked down.

"About one-third of it," he replied.

"How did I get here?" She asked in horror.

"I don’t know," he said with a hint of a smile on his lips. "I think it was a gradual process. You started with your arm, then a leg, and slowly inched your way up."

"You sound like you were watching me. Why didn’t you wake me? This must have been uncomfortable."

"It wasn’t," he insisted. "How’s your body?" He changed the subject.

Mauve blinked and rolled off him. "Just a slight headache," she replied.

"Your temperature feels better than last night," he said.

"I feel better too," she grinned.

Jael didn’t look as happy as she did. She couldn’t blame him. There was a high chance that come sunrise she would be sick again.

"Don’t push it," he said.

"I won’t, I promise." Her grin was still in place.

"Alright, I will tell Mill to come help you get ready and Jean to check on your health."

Mauve frowned, "Are you going somewhere?" She asked.

"Unfortunately yes," he said giving her a sad look. "I need to speak to the guards and Danag. We need to implement a few changes. It might take a while for me to come back but I will as soon as I am done. Don’t do anything I won’t approve of."

Mauve tried not to laugh as he tried to be stern with her. "I won’t, okay."

He squinted his eyes at her as though he didn’t trust her and Mauve was on the verge of bursting out laughing.

She knew he was serious but it was pretty obvious he was forcing himself to be stern. She was glad. Before she slept, she had been worried but he looked okay.

He looked like he had gotten enough sleep which was a relief since she had decided to sleep like a maniac for some reason.

"You don’t have to worry," she added. "I won’t even leave your room so hurry up and come back."

"I will be back before you know it," he replied and started to get out of bed.

Mauve wanted to say he should at least give her a goodbye kiss but she didn’t. Instead, she watched him walk out of the room, waving goodbye.

Mauve looked around the low-lit room. She has spent so much time here that she could find her way around it with her eyes closed.

She moved closer to the bedside table and brought her arm to the light, inspecting the patches to see if they had spread some more while she was sleeping. Wondering why it always chose when she was asleep to do that.

Mauve squinted her eyes as she stared hard but it didn’t look any different from the day before.

She lifted her dress to check the ones on her stomach and leg when a knock rang out. Mauve was so startled she almost dropped the lamp on herself.
