Chapter 581. Smell of Sickness
Chapter 581: 581. Smell of Sickness
Jael walked quietly beside Kieran as they walked to his study. Neither of them said a word as Jael led the way.
Jael sat on his seat and Kieran looked a little bit cautious. He walked toward the seat facing Jael and reluctantly sat on it.
"I hear Mauve’s illness keeps fluctuating. I do hope the physician can do something about it," Kieran said in the silence.
"I don’t know about that," Jael replied.
Kieran frowned, "What do you mean?"
"Jean is convinced she has an accelerated version of the White Disease which means nothing but certain death."
Kieran brows dipped, "He is sure?"
"Well no but he didn’t sound like it could be anything else."
"Is she aware?" Kieran asked.
Jael took a deep breath, "I am trying to keep it away from her as long as I can."
"Does this have anything to do with why you called for me?" Kieran asked. "I heard you have been in search of me since they arrived, I apologize for not being available but today I followed the guards into the field."
"I noticed you weren’t at the last meal," Jael said, ignoring his question.
"I was too tired to attend."
"I am not surprised."
Kieran shuffled in his seat as he waited for Jael to explain the reason why he called him but Jael seemed to be taking his time.
"Do you think..." Jael started to say after what felt like an eternity. "You could find out more about the White Disease?"
"What exactly would you like me to find out?" Kieran asked. "I think the symptoms are very clear, it might vary but there is one common factor which is the white–"
"How to treat it," Jael interrupted.
Kieran looked stunned for a couple of minutes. "I don’t think that’s possible. First off, I am not sure how she caught it and secondly, I am not cut out for making drugs, I work well with poison and there is no way to test it out on anyone. It will be a wild goose chase."
"You never know until you try," Jael insisted. "You said the same thing about the Palers but you came up with a solution in only a few months."
"That’s not the same thing," Kieran said. "I can’t experiment when her life is on the line."
"She is going to die either way," Jael forced himself to tone down his pitch.
"We don’t know about that just yet."
Jael sighed, "I suppose you’re right. Would you give it a try at least?"
Kieran looked torn, he looked at Jael and then to the window behind Jael. His eyes darted, not concentrating on anything and it was obvious he was in deep thoughts.
"Okay but don’t rely on me. It is especially hard as I don’t even have anything to test it on and the one drug I made, made her worse."
"I wouldn’t say that. It did make her better and the same thing is happening with the physician’s drugs. We have to figure something out soon."
Kieran sighed, "What did Louis think about this?"
Jael gaze darkened, "He is unaware of this."
"I see and by the looks of things you would prefer I keep it away from him."
"Yes."
"As you wish, Sire. I will do my research and get back to you. If there is no chance that I will come up with anything that would improve Mauve’s case, I shan’t carry on the experiment."
Jael looked visibly disappointed but he simply nodded his head without saying a word.
"Would that be all, Sire?" Kieran asked.
"I suppose it is. I hope to hear a positive response, Kieran. You haven’t failed me before, I doubt you will start now."
Kieran placed his palm over his mouth and slowly stood to his feet, he brought his hand to his side and bowed.
Standing to his full height he said, "I hope so too."
Jael leaned on his seat as he watched Kieran walk out the door. He didn’t like the way the situation was eating at him.
He could tell he wouldn’t be able to get much sleep today. He had a little bit of hope but after the last meal, he had known she would fall sick and this time around it might be worse than before.
Why was this happening? It didn’t make any sense. He wanted to comprehend the situation but it wasn’t very easy.
He finally forced himself to stand to his feet. He didn’t know how long he had sat there after Kieran left.
As he approached his room he could tell the physician wasn’t there anymore, just Mill.
He pushed open the door and his eyes met with Mauve right away. She had a frown on her face even though it was clear she was happy to see him.
"Sire," Mill said but Jael didn’t register her greeting.
"What took you so long?" Mauve asked.
He slowly closed the door behind himself and walked further into the room. She laid on her back and the covers hid everything but her face.
Her forehead creased slightly and he knew this wasn’t because of him. The headache was back. He swore and picked up the pace so he could reach her faster.
"My apologies, the conversation with Kieran held me longer than I thought it would."
She pouted as he got close enough. "It is fine. Jean left a while ago. He gave me some herbs and mentioned mixing some..."
"I don’t think you should be talking, save your strength," he said and sat down on the edge of the bed.
"My lips are the only thing not tired. Conversations aren’t a hassle. As I was explaining, Jean said he would make a mixture for the white patches, at least to slow down how fast they are spreading. He is concerned they might get to my chest, neck, and face."
"Okay. When would he make it?" Jael asked and lightly touched the side of her face.
"After sunrise, he won’t be able to give it to me until sunset. I said that was fine since I would be asleep anyway."
"That’s good," he tried to smile.
"Are you okay?" She asked.
Jael nodded.
"Mill, thank you," Mauve said. "I should let you go to sleep. You have stayed with me long enough."
Mill nodded and smiled at her. "Please, don’t hesitate to call me if something is wrong."
"I won’t," Mauve waved Mill goodnight while she bowed to Jael once again and she didn’t stop waving until the door closed. Only then did she turn her attention back to Jael.
"Is something wrong?" She asked.
"What do you mean?" He asked with a frown.
"You have been off," she replied and sat up.
"You shouldn’t get up," he replied and tried to stop her.
"Don’t worry," she pushed his hand away. "It’s just a slight headache this time."
"Are you sure?" Jael asked.
"Of course," she replied. "You know I will always tell you if something is wrong."
"Yeah, I know."
She stretched her and started to undo the ropes around his neck. "I need you to do the same," she said.
"You are sick," he replied. "That’s enough to put me in a sour mood."
"Is that all?" She asked as she let the untied ropes hang down.
"Yeah," he replied.
She moved her hand to his hair. Moving her body closer to him as she tried to undo the band holding the ponytail.
Her smell invaded his nose. He could already smell her but with her this close, she was all he could smell.
Her smell was the same but now it was mixed with a little bit of sickness. He could smell it and it made him sick to his stomach.
She took the band off and touched his hair. She looked fascinated by it and Jael knew he was satisfied just watching her.
"Did you fight with Louis?"
The question was so unexpected that it caught him off guard and he didn’t have time to lie about it.
"It wouldn’t call it a fight," he said with a sigh, giving in to the fact that he had been caught.
"What would you call it?"
His soft fingers tracing the side of his face made him forget his worries for a bit. He wanted to lean into her touch so she would keep touching him.
"A slight disagreement."
"So what did you do?" She asked.
Jael looked taken aback and he stared at her with disbelief. "Why do you think it was me?" He asked in horror.
"Because I am almost certain Louis wouldn’t start a fight with you, he wouldn’t want to be on your bad side."
"And I would?" He asked.
"Of course not," she said and kissed his cheeks.
Jael stopped her from moving away as he took her lips. It was warmer than usual but it didn’t take away the softness and her sweet taste.
She kissed her back, Jael sucked on her tongue and had to remind himself she was sick before he got carried away.
He was the one who broke the kiss and the disappointment in her eyes made him hate her illness all over again.
"I am listening," she said, recovering quickly. "What happened?"
