Chapter 577. White Disease

Chapter 577: 577. White Disease

"I am afraid she has the White Disease," Jean said.

Silence followed his words. Someone could drop a pin and it would echo with how silent it was.

Jael could see Jean’s nervousness increase as the silence dragged on. The physician’s eyes darted from left to right.

"She thought the same thing," Jael finally said.

"She did? Her mother died of the same thing, I am sure it is familiar to her."

"She thinks she is going to die," Jael said. There was no point beating around the bush.

Jean shuffled his feet, twisted his fingers and Jael could see sweat break out of his forehead.

"Jean, you’re allowed to say what you think. There is no need to sugarcoat your words, it won’t help anyone," Jael commanded.

Jean swallowed and nodded at Jael’s words. He looked to the floor before he slowly looked back to Jael’s face.

"She won’t be wrong," he replied.

"So, she is going to die?" Jael asked. Even as he asked the question Jael felt his heart rip into two.

"No one has survived the white disease," Jean explained. "We can drag it out but nothing works. After a couple of years, they give in to the sickness."

"So we have years, I am sure we can come up with a solution by then," Jael said and started to stand on his feet.

"I am sorry, Sire but I don’t think so," Jean said.

Jael jerked his gaze in the physician’s direction and Jean visibly shrank.

"What do you mean?" Jael asked, he had to remind himself not to yell at the physician. He was simply giving his diagnosis.

"Her case is different," Jean replied. "According to Mill she has only been sick for four days, right?" He asked.

Jael nodded, confirming his statement.

"And she is already covered with these many white patches. That is absolutely unusual. It takes a lot of years for the patches to spread this much. Not only that but she had a fever first, that’s unusual too. Usually, it starts with a small patch. Fever means you’re nearing the final phase."

"What do you mean?" Jael asked.

"It is the White Disease but her symptoms are too fast. Way too fast. A single white patch can stay for two months before another appears but hers increased the next day."

"Is this a good sign or a bad sign?"

"I don’t know but if it’s truly the white disease and it’s hitting her this hard, I don’t think she has long left. We will be lucky if she lasts another month."

Jael felt cold, it was the kind that didn’t give any warning. The kind that made you sick to your stomach. The kind that mixed with fear.

It was not a great feeling and the only time he could ever think of feeling like this was when he heard the news about his parents’ death.

For the first time in Jael’s life, he said a little prayer. A simple one.

"I might be wrong," Jean immediately said at Jael’s expression.

"What are the chances of that?" Jael asked.

"Very little," Jean said with a sad look on his face. "I am sure it is the White Disease. The patches on her skin are more than enough clarification. However, her symptoms say otherwise and I have never had to deal with anything like this before. I can do my best to treat her symptoms, the headache, the fever and she should be better in a few days, however, if it is the white Disease, she will fall sick again and I fear it may be for the last time."

"Do what you have to do," Jael said dismissively. "Leave no stone unturned in this case. If you think it will work, don’t hesitate to try it."

"Yes, Sire." Jean bowed.

"You may leave."

Jean bowed against and walked for the door. He glanced back with a sad look on his face before he went out the door.

"Jael," Louis called at the sound of the door closing. It was the first word he spoke since he walked into the study.

"Didn’t you hear? I said leave me."

"No, I don’t think you should be alone."

"You are right, we should probably head back to Greenham, get another physician. Jean probably doesn’t know what he is talking about. There should be an expert in..."

"Jael!" Louis yelled. "Snap out of it."

"She might die," he whispered.

"We don’t know that yet, Jean said this is a completely different string of symptoms. There is hope in that."

"And if there isn’t?" Jael asked.

"Thinking that way won’t change the current situation but hope will at least give you some comfort."

Jael gave him a dark look, "She’s not going to die, if that’s what you’re saying."

"We are saying the same thing," Louis said, taken aback at Jael’s outburst but the look in his eyes said otherwise.

"Sometimes, I wonder whose side you’re on," Jael said with an intense stare.

"Yours, obviously. I can’t believe you’d ask me that!"

"Why did you tell Mauve I would take a mate?" Jael asked, glaring at Louis.

Louis blinked, this time around he looked genuinely surprised. "What do you mean?"

Jael stood up, "You know exactly what I am talking about. Now is not the time to play dumb."

"Would you have preferred I lied to her?" Louis asked.

"It’s not your business!" Jael said. He was angry and helpless. It was not a great combination.

"Maybe but at least she deserves to know the truth."

"The truth is what I say it is!"

"You’re not serious!" Louis sighed, "I apologize. I should have kept my mouth shut but she asked and I didn’t think it was right to lie to her. We can discuss this further when she gets better. For now, let’s worry about Mauve."

The look in Jael’s eyes changed for a second and he dropped to his seat. "Leave me alone," Jael said.

Louis bowed his head and without hesitation, he walked to the door. He opened it and turned to look at Jael. "I will be right outside if you need me."
