Chapter 563: 563. Freshly Brewed

The feel of Jael’s lips against hers sent a current running through her. He tugged on her lower lip, lightly sucking on it as he deepened the kiss.

He pried her lips open and Mauve tasted sweetness. She kissed him back, invading his mouth as she wanted to taste more of him.

She could feel her body warm up and she knew it had nothing to do with the fever.

She felt his fangs and she kissed him even harder, feeling an urgency she couldn’t explain. She moved closer to him as she pressed her entire structure against him.

Mauve didn’t know who was more startled when they heard a knock but she soon realized it wasn’t shock on Jael’s face but annoyance.

She laughed and he tried to kiss her again. "Shouldn’t you answer the door?" She asked with their lips close enough to touch.

He rubbed the tip of his nose with hers. "I don’t want to."

He was clearly turned on, his eyes glowed and his fangs were more obvious.

Another knock followed and he sighed loudly. He rolled out of the bed and walked to the door but he didn’t open it immediately.

He stood still for a few seconds and Mauve could guess why. She too needed a few seconds to recover. She was sure her face was flushed.

"May I ask what this is about?" Jael asked as he threw open the door.

"I am not here for you, now if you will excuse me, I’d like to see the sick lady."

"I am not sick," Mauve called out.

"You have your answer. Now leave."

"Are we really going to have this every time?" Louis asked with an unimpressed look on his face. "Or wait, am I interrupting something?"

Mauve’s eyes widened, his perception was annoying sometimes. She hoped it wasn’t obvious.

Jael narrowed his eyes and then stepped back for Louis to walk into the room. Louis walked into the room with Jael closely behind him. He walked to the bed where Mauve lay with her back to the bed.

She turned only her eyes to look at him, following his movements until he stopped by the side of the bed.

"You look worse than the last time I saw you," he commented.

"That’s because Kieran gave me something awful to drink," she replied.

Louis frowned, "Since when has Kieran been a human physician?"

"He is the closest person to one around here. What did you expect? That we would ask you?" Jael interrupted.

"Wouldn’t it be better to get her to an actual physician rather than a makeshift one?" Louis returned.

"Kieran is not a makeshift physician," Mauve argued. "Contrary to what you think, he is actually pretty good. He saved my life once."

"I heard but I only mean it will be better to get you to proper care. There is no reason why an expert can’t be consulted."

"I feel better already. I must have just been tired," she said.

"That is not what your face says," Louis said.

Mauve wondered if her face was still flushed and that’s what he could see "It’s the green juice I drank, I still haven’t recovered. It tasted like freshly brewed horse pee."

Louis threw his head back and laughed. "That’s some description. I can’t wait for you to get better. Lady Marceline wishes you a quick recovery. She wanted to tell you herself but she figured Jael would chase her off and coupled with the fact that she already left, I guess that’s pretty impossible now."

"She left?" Jael and Mauve asked simultaneously.

"Yep!"

"Thanks for relaying her message," Mauve said, meaning every word.

"It’s my pleasure. I guess I will leave you alone," Louis said and started for the door. "The faster you get well the faster we can get to do that."

He glanced back at her and winked before slipping out the door. Mauve could clearly see the horrified look on Jael’s face.

"Do what?" Jael asked, darkly.

"Nothing important. I asked him to read the books written in the old tongue to me," Mauve lied easily, she didn’t think it was something she could discuss with Jael just yet. She didn’t even know what it was.

She had to get more answers before she told anything to Jael. She was worried she might not be able to find out more information

Jael frowned and sat on the bed. "He doesn’t need to do that. I can do that."

Mauve couldn’t help the smile that escaped her lips. "Thank you but Louis already offered."

"Are you saying no?" He asked with a stern look.

Mauve tried to act as though she was taking him seriously but her smile increased further. "Of course not."

"Alright," he replied. "How do you feel? Does your mouth still taste awful?"

She started to shake her head. "It’s not too bad." She had completely forgotten about the taste of the herbs, all she could remember was Jael kissing her.

"Okay. That reminds me, I didn’t tell you if Vae got back safely."

Mauve nodded trying to keep track of the conversation. She had thought about Vae but didn’t ask as she knew Jael was likely to tell her if something arose.

"Did she?" She asked

"Yes," Mack returned just before sunrise last night.

Mauve frowned, "Isn’t that a little too long?" She asked.

"He ran into a few difficulties on his way back and had to deal with them."

"What difficulties?" Mauve asked.

Jael sighed, "Nothing too scary. The guards were able to deal with it but it did delay their journey significantly."

"Oh my," she brought her hands to her lips. She wondered just how bad it must have been for them to take this long.

She didn’t push, it was obvious Jael was sparing her the details. She hoped there weren’t any casualties.

"Don’t worry about it. Everyone got back safely so that’s good news."

"Thank you," she said with a nod. "Without your help, Vae would probably never be freed."

"You already said your thanks. That’s enough. You should get some rest."

Mauve nodded happily and adjusted, turning on her side. She looked at Jael with a huge smile on her face.
