The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 557. Cold
Chapter 557: 557. Cold
Mauve held onto Jael as he tried to get out of bed. "Don’t leave," she whispered.
She was wrapped in the bed cover, it kept her warm while she placed her burning head against Jael’s chest.
"I am going to get Kieran," Jael said as he tried to pull away from her. "You’re not getting any cooler."
"It’s late. I don’t want you to bother him," she whispered, "I just need to sleep. I am sure the fever will break before morning."
Besides, she was sure there wasn’t much Kieran could do to help. She would need some herbs if she didn’t feel better by evening.
Jael looked unsure and sighed. "You won’t be bothering him," Jael insisted. "I will go get him and that’s final."
Mauve simply nodded and rolled away from Jael. That took too much effort as she winced at the headache.
Her head felt like it would split open. She groaned. She would be lying if she said a huge part of her wasn’t worried.
She couldn’t remember the last time she felt this sick. She could almost say it was her worst ever.
She heard the sound of the door open and close and knew Jael had left the room. She wished he didn’t leave her alone. He should have sent a servant but he probably didn’t think about that in his hurry to get Kieran.
Mauve didn’t know how long passed before she heard the door open again. It felt like a while but it was probably just a few minutes.
She heard voices but the words muffled before they reached her ears. She didn’t strain them, even thinking was worsening her headache.
She didn’t bother trying to look at the door. She simply remained still and waited for them to come closer.
"Mauve," Kieran called to her. His gentle voice was soothing.
She smiled as his face appeared in front of her. His brows creased and he bent forward for a closer look.
Mauve was sure she looked pathetic. She was wrapped like a spring roll and her hair was in disarray. Not to mention that the headache made her wince.
He stretched out his hand and touched her forehead with the back of his palm and immediately pulled away his hand.
He tried not to show any change in expression but Mauve could tell he was concerned.
"How do you feel?" Kieran asked, his dark blonde hair catching the candlelight.
"Well," Mauve mumbled, she squinted as she tried to keep her gaze on his face. "Not too bad. Aside from the chills, headache, and maybe my increased temperature, I feel fine. The headache is the only thing that’s a bit of a bother."
Kieran frowned a little and pulled away. She pouted as she realized no one was laughing at her joke.
Kieran turned to Jael and slowly shook his head. "I don’t know what is wrong. It is pretty hard to tell from her symptoms. At this point, it could be anything."
"Surely, there must be some sort of clue?" Jael asked.
Kieran looked away, he looked lost in thought. "Has she been around anything new lately? It is not possible she caught it from a vampire, we don’t get affected by human illnesses. However, I just want to know if she might have been exposed to something that would make her fall sick."
Jael looked calmer than she expected. "I see," he replied. His back was straight as he spoke and his arms folded. "She was around the human Seraphino brought into the castle a few days prior, do you think that might have something to do with it?"
Kieran frowned, "I highly doubt that." Turning to Mauve he asked, "Was the human in question sick?"
Mauve shook her head, "No! Vae didn’t seem sick. She did look weak and a bit pale but she wasn’t sick. Besides, I didn’t stay with her long enough to catch anything."
Mauve winced at the end of her sentence. The chill was a nuisance but the worst of all was the blinding headache.
Mauve was glad she wasn’t coughing, that would have been annoying but right now she would almost trade her headache for a cough.
"At the same time, it could be stressful. I am sure the current state of the castle must have been a bit stressful for you."
Mauve nodded. She wanted to argue that it wasn’t the case but Kieran looked like he was having a hard time trying to figure out what was wrong with her.
He must have seen the look on her face for he immediately added, "I apologize but I can only make guesses here."
"It is better than nothing. What do you propose we do?" Jael asked.
"I don’t know." Kieran turned from Mauve to Jael. "This is different from dealing with an injury. All I can say is, she should get a lot of rest. Preferably, bed rest. She should also be given lots of soup. I know a few herbs we can use to break her fever but that’s pretty much it. If it’s an illness that’s the cause of the fever, it will most likely persist. You will have to get a physician."
"I see," Jael whispered. "Thanks for your help.
"You don’t have to thank me," Kieran said. "Also, you can’t remain wrapped up like this. It will only worsen your fever."
"But I am cold," she cried.
"I know and I didn’t say you couldn’t cover up. Just don’t bundle up."
"Okay," Mauve replied but didn’t attempt to unwrap herself from the covers. He didn’t say she had to do it immediately.
"I will speak to the servants and have them prepare something for her to take. Preferably some broth. The warm soup should make you feel better. I am a bit worried about the herbs though. I might be able to find something in the kitchen but I am guessing most of them will be outside." Kieran frowned and touched his chin.
Mauve instantly understood his worry. "It’s daylight," she completed.
