The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 556. Fever

Chapter 556: 556. Fever

"I suppose," Mauve responded with a smile.

"Would that be all?" Jael interrupted before Louis could say anything more.

"I guess," Louis replied.

"You don’t have to be so rude to Louis," she said.

"It is fine," Louis replied with a wink. I only came here to make sure you aren’t dying. "I shall take my leave now." He said and rushed to the door.

"He was just trying to be nice," she replied.

"I am sure," Jael said, his fingers around her arms felt a bit stiff.

Somehow Mauve was able to make it to the last meal. But it took incessant pleas from her before Jael listened.

She got to the table and realized most of the Lords were gone. The only ones left were Lady Jevera and her father. Lord Alaric and his mate, Lady Marceline and Kieran.

The remainder of the Lords that stayed behind that she didn’t mention all had something to do with the Palers Elimination Squad and she figured that was supposed to resume soon.

The only thing that was out of place was that Otis was nowhere to be found. He was gone before the second meal the night before but she hadn’t thought much about it.

She wondered if it meant he was off the squad. She glanced at Jael and his eyes met hers, she wondered if this was something she could ask him about.

She wiped the thoughts away as she got back to eating. The meal was delicious and she was soon engrossed in it, forgetting her surroundings.

Lord Levaton seemed to be having a conversation with Lord Kieran while Louis shared a few words with Lady Marceline.

Lord Alaric kept to himself but Mauve noticed his mood was better. He probably got some rest as it was definitely obvious he was feeling better.

He noticed her stare and hid his face some more. She looked away, wondering why he was extremely shy.

Mauve also noticed Erick was nowhere to be found, only Damon and Danag were seated at the table.

She frowned a little, wondering if it had anything to do with what she saw the night before but he had been at the table for the first meal so it was hard to say for sure.

Jael watched her closely, glancing at her at every turn. She adjusted on her seat and tried to finish her food.

As soon as Jael was done eating, he excused himself and led her out of the dining hall. Mauve didn’t miss the smirk on Louis’ face.

She got to the room and literally seconds later, her bath water appeared, and Jael started to take off her dress.

"Jael, don’t you think this is a little too much," she whispered.

"What do you mean?" He asked, pretending to be oblivious.

"This!" She yelled. "Anyone will think I am dying with the way you’re acting."

"You’re not, I just want to make sure you get everything you need for a speedy recovery," he smirked.

"I can’t help but think you’re enjoying this at my own expense."

"No, of course not," Jael replied as her dress fell off her shoulders. "And it is not my intention to make it seem that way."

"I know," she replied and pouted. "That was a pretty insensitive thing for me to say."

Jael shook his head, "I might be enjoying it a little too much," he smirked as he completely helped her out of her dress.

"Jael," she cried.

"But only because I like taking care of you," he touched her lightly and Mauve swallowed the huge lump that suddenly formed at the back of her throat.

She nodded her head like some puppet and let Jael help her into the bath. He washed her up carefully, it was almost painful.

When he was done, he dried her up and helped her into her night dress. Tucked her into bed and looked at her with a smile.

"You looked like you were enjoying yourself at my expense," Jael whispered as he touched her nose.

Mauve chuckled and rolled on her side. "You must have been seeing things," she whispered as she wrapped herself in the sheets. Maybe it was because she just got out of the water but for some reason, she was feeling a lot colder than usual.

Jael laughed, "If you say so. I will clean up and join you soon enough, don’t go to sleep without me."

Mauve nodded, "Promise," she whispered.

She watched Jael walk away from the bed with drowsy eyes. Maybe, it was how cozy she felt but Mauve could immediately tell she would not be able to keep her promise.

Her eyes were closing and she tried to keep them open and the more she tried, the more she failed. Soon enough, she couldn’t and she fell into a deep sleep.

Mauve wasn’t sure what she dreamt about but her dream felt so long. It just kept going and before she could properly comprehend what was going on around her, she would move to another section of her dream.

Then she heard a loud voice, it sounded so far away at first but the voice was so familiar she tried to concentrate on it with all her might.

The owner of the voice sounded worried but Jael always sounded worried. She felt her face break into a smile but at the same time, his words reached her.

"You’re burning up," he replied, wrapping her with his body.

Mauve groaned, his cold skin felt good and terrible at the same time. She tried to pull away. It was soothing but she felt cold, she didn’t want anything so cold pressed up against her.

"I don’t think you’re supposed to get this hot," he replied as he refused to let her out of his grip. "I hate that I wasn’t worried for nothing. I will have to get Kieran."

Mauve’s eyes flew open, she was awake, and with the way Jael’s skin felt against hers, he wasn’t exaggerating. She had a fever.

Not only was her skin ridiculously hot but she also had a blinding headache, her mouth tasted awful and she was starting to feel extremely cold.
