Chapter 544. Dance with me
Chapter 544: 544. Dance with me
Mauve sat on Jael’s legs as she watched Seraphino bow to Jael before he walked away. The smirk on his face made her feel a little nauseous or that might be the wine, it was hard to tell.
The party wasn’t proceeding as fast as she thought it would and time dragged on like a toddler learning to walk.
"You look bored," Jael said.
"No, I don’t. Besides, you can’t can’t even see my face," she responded.
"But your sighs are loud."
"No, they are not."
"We can leave if you want," he whispered.
"What a tempting offer but no thank you," she responded.
"Why not? Going to keep staying here even though you’d rather be elsewhere."
"You’re the only one with the idea that I am bored."
"How about a dance?" He asked.
Mauve jerked her head back so fast she cracked her neck. "Ow!" She cried.
"Why did you do that?" Jael asked with a chuckle.
She grabbed the side of her neck, gently massaging it in. "It wasn’t on purpose."
"Was it that shocking?" He asked with an amused tone to his voice.
"A little," she whispered.
"Why?" He leaned forward.
Mauve froze a little. "No reason," she blurted.
"Liar," he whispered. "But your answer is more important. Dance with me," he replied.
"No," she shook her head. "I can’t dance."
But a part of her wished she could. She didn’t even get a dance at her wedding but of course, there had been no need for that in an arranged marriage.
Never would she have guessed Jael would ask her to dance with him in front of all these people.
"You don’t need to know the moves," he whispered. "I’ll guide you."
Mauve shook her head even though the urge to agree was intense. "I never would have pictured you for a dancer," she laughed.
"For you, anything," he replied.
"Here we go again," Louis said with a loud sigh. "Is this not embarrassing? I get that you want to keep her close but there are several ways you can do it without shoving it in all our faces."
"Louis," Mauve said with a bright smile as he walked up with a tray.
He stopped in front of them and placed the tray on the table next to Jael’s seat. It was a small cushioned table. He picked one of the cups and handed it to Mauve.
"Here you go," he said.
Mauve eyed the cup suspiciously and glared at him. He frowned slightly, confusion clearly written on his face.
She reluctantly brought the cup to her lips and the taste of the berries made her groan out loud. It was so good and it tasted fresh too.
"That good?" Louis asked with pride. Mauve didn’t miss the smirk he threw at Jael.
"Now, you bring me what I want but I am not going to lie, it is pretty good."
"Well, I wanted them as fresh as possible. That’s what took so long."
"You’re forgiven," she replied and drank the rest of the cup. "Let me have another, please," she said and stretched the empty cup to him.
"As you wish, I brought enough to drown a cat."
Mauve chuckled, "What has a cat got to do with it?"
Louis shrugged. "You get the idea."
She nodded and accepted the next drink. She gulped it as soon as she held it. How did it taste better?
"Don’t you think you should get off your high seat?" Louis said to Jael.
Jael frowned, "I can’t tell if you mean literally or metaphorically. Either way, the answer is the same. No!"
"You know what I mean," Louis said. "They are your guests yet you remain away from them. A few minutes wouldn’t kill you. I’d watch Mauve for you."
"No!" He replied.
"You’ve already been playing the role of a perfect host. Why stop now? It won’t cost you anything and I am sure the Lords would be pleased."
"I think so too," Mauve whispered. She already felt bad interrupting the party and then sitting on Jael’s legs throughout. At this point, she would take anything to get him away from her.
She couldn’t believe he had requested a guard to come get her not more than fifteen minutes after she went with Mill and Sabrina, mumbling something about her safety.
"You’re on Louis’ side?" He asked.
"Of course not, I am always on your side but you can’t remain in your seat forever," she replied.
"If they wanted to see me, they could have come up here," Jael responded.
"Not while you have a human on your legs, no," Louis replied.
"That would be a waste of time and I do not like to waste my time."
"Jael..." Mauve started to call.
"Fine but only for a few minutes."
"That would be absolutely lovely," Louis said with a proud look on his face.
"Don’t look so hopeful," Jael said with a dark look and gently lifted Mauve off his legs. He held her in the air easily. She kicked her legs and he dropped her onto his seat.
"I will be right back, don’t you dare move," he ordered.
"You don’t have to make it sound like a threat," Louis said. "Don’t worry about a thing, I’ll watch her closely."
"You better," Jael said and started walking away from them.
"Finally," Louis said as they both watched Jael leave. "I thought he’d never leave. I am sure he must have been overwhelming."
Mauve chuckled. "Well, not exactly but thank you."
"I didn’t do it for you. It’s more for his own good."
"Are you enjoying the party?" She asked.
"Are you serious?" Louis turned to look at her.
"Of course. Are you saying I can’t ask you?"
"No, I just find it odd that you did."
"It’s not that odd. Now answer."
He shrugged, "It’s not bad."
Mauve chuckled, "You were mad when I said that."
"No, I wasn’t," he laughed. "How about you, still think it’s not bad?"
"It’s fun," she grinned. "The juice made it ten times better."
"You’re welcome," he replied.
