Chapter 543. Bitter End
Chapter 543: 543. Bitter End
"Did you see her drink it?" Seraphino asked Otis as he walked around to join him outside.
"Outside? Really?" Otis complained as he walked towards him.
"Wouldn’t it be better to deal with a few mosquitoes than be overheard by the Primus or one of his many supporters?"
"I see your point but we could have gone upstairs," Otis protested.
"And miss the beautiful sky, I think not."
Otis looked up at the sky and back at Seraphino as though he had lost his mind. "What beautiful sky? I can literally count the stars."
"The ambiance," he replied.
Otis squinted his eyes at him, "Yeah," he replied absentmindedly.
Seraphino glared at him. "You didn’t answer my question," he said.
"I did see her," he responded. "She took about half of it though. I don’t know if she drank the rest. The drink hadn’t been what she had requested but when I mixed it with the juice, it tasted off."
"You drank it?" Seraphino asked in awe.
"How else would I know if it’s undetectable?"
"Weren’t you concerned?"
"Is that a joke? I can’t contract human sickness."
"Fair enough," Seraphino admitted.
"As I was saying, I had to use fermented wine even though she had specifically requested against getting that."
Seraphino blinked, "You did what? You were willing to take a chance that she might not drink it rather than she drank it and realize something was off."
"Pretty accurate," Otis replied with a nod.
"Have you lost your mind?" He asked.
"I don’t think you should be so irritated. She drank about half of it so that should be enough."
"Still, she might not have."
"Maybe but that’s not something we need to worry about, is it?"
"True."
"You sound disappointed," Otis replied.
"Do I?"
"Obviously."
"Well, I can’t help but think it’s a little boring that you’d go the safe route."
"I understand that it might be appealing to you to have your head on a platter but I’d rather keep mine."
"I can see that. How did you find out about this though? I can’t imagine you just happened to be passing at just the right time."
"Of course not, I asked Corbin to keep his movements close enough to the human to hear conversations but not enough to draw any attention to himself."
"Who would have thought he would be this useful?" Seraphino asked.
"The next part was figuring out how to get the drinks to her without the Primus noticing and I guess fate was on our side because out of nowhere I saw the human walk away from the Primus with one of the rejects and Lord Garth’s firstborn."
"Wow! You must have spent a long time scheming. I am truly impressed you managed to accomplish this before the first half of the party and even more so without leaving any incriminating evidence."
"I am not too sure about that. Mill had looked suspiciously at the scapegoat but I told him should he get caught that would most likely be the death of him and he knew better than to rat any of us out."
"He looked to have done a good job."
"You were watching?" Otis asked in shock.
"Of course, like I’d miss such a grand moment. The instant I saw him scampering across the party floors, I locked my eyes on him and surprisingly he didn’t disappoint."
"However, I wasn’t the only one intensely staring," Seraphino replied. "As expected, the Primus never looked away once. It is absolutely refreshing to have him watch."
"I don’t think he would know you have something to do with it. As you said the symptoms won’t show until two days later."
"Which is disappointing, I want him to know."
"I think it’s best this way."
"Maybe but it is in no way satisfying."
"If you say so. At least I am free from the castle. I wasn’t exactly pleased to have been stuck here. The castle is absolutely crawling with flies and I’ve had them on my skin a little too long."
"A little whiny, aren’t you?"
"If that’s what you’ll call it," Otis said and started walking in the direction of the castle.
"Leaving already?" Seraphino asked.
"We have already been gone for suspiciously too long."
"Oh let them be suspicious, it would be even better," Seraphino replied.
"Maybe for you," Otis responded. "I’d like to leave the castle without the scrutiny of the Primus on me."
"Scaredy cat."
"If that’s what you’ll call it. When you’re done enjoying the ambiance of the sky or whatever you may call it, do well to step in."
"You don’t give the orders around here."
"Yes, My Lord," Otis replied but kept walking away.
Seraphino watched him walk away for a few seconds before turning around to look at the scenery.
Even though his eyes seemed to be taking everything in. His mind was far from that. After about a couple of minutes of being lost in thoughts, he slowly made his way back to the castle doors.
The guards were quick to open the doors for him. He wondered if the guards would inform Jael about him and Otis leaving the party at an odd time.
He truly didn’t like that Jael was completely oblivious to what he had just done and the fact that he might be completely unaware of this fact even after Mauve’s death didn’t sit right with him.
Seraphino walked into the party and smirked when his eyes met with the Primus. He gave a little mock bow, not missing the fact that the human was seated on his legs once again.
She must have returned while he was outside with Otis. The sight pissed him off more than it should. The deliberate way Jael showed her off like some trophy was hard to miss.
However, the fact that she wouldn’t be around for long greatly appeased the distaste in his mouth.
Losing his human would be so worth it if he was the reason why Jael’s human was about to meet her bitter end.
Unfortunately, the process was going to be gruesome for her and he truly wished he would have been here to see it.
