The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 535. How Loud?

Chapter 535: 535. How Loud?

"Mill," Mauve suddenly called.

"Yes," the vampire said absentmindedly as she washed Mauve’s back.

"How loud is my breath?" She asked.

Mill paused washing Mauve’s back for a second as though she was processing the question before she continued.

"Loud enough, I guess."

"You can hear it clearly even when I am talking?" She asked.

"Yeah," she said, obviously not sure about the purpose of the conversation.

"How far away do I have to be from you to not hear it?"

"I don’t know but as long as I am in this room. I am very much aware of your heartbeat."

"Oh," Mauve replied.

"Why?" She asked, the confusion apparent in her voice.

"Well my heartbeat suddenly changed rhythm today during the last meal and everyone turned to look at me," Mauve explained.

"Oh," Mill chuckled. "It is not something that we listen for but we are painfully aware of it. I guess it may be because it has something to do with the blood that flows in your veins. I don’t know."

"That doesn’t sound very comforting. You’re telling me vampires are conscious of this because I am their food."

Mill chuckled, "You’re always so concerned by this."

"Of course, I am surrounded by vampires. I don’t want to be eaten someday." She was trying hard to sound serious.

"Don’t worry, we don’t like the taste of human flesh."

Mauve gasped in horror. "That means you have tried it."

Mill threw her head back and laughed. "You’re missing the point."

"I am pretty sure that is the point."

"Why are you so concerned about it now? You shouldn’t be."

"Well, it means I can never sneak up on you. That doesn’t make me very happy.

Mill laughed, "I like that that’s your problem with the entire situation. Why would you want to sneak up on..."

"Wait a minute," Mauve interrupted. "I can’t even hide. If a vampire was chasing me, they would be able to tell where I am."

At this point, Mill was fighting hard to hold back her laughter. "I don’t think you would ever have to worry about that. They would certainly catch you before you can even hide."

"You’re not helping, Mill."

"Only because you’re worried about impossible things."

"It’s not impossible that I may run from a vampire," Mauve insisted.

"If you say so," Mill replied and helped her out of the water.

Mauve pouted but she let Mill help her out. Mill tried Mauve up and dressed her in a silk nightgown. It was the color lilac and Mauve absolutely looked the way it felt against her skin.

"I heard Vae has been sent back," Mill suddenly said as she cleaned up. "I am glad."

"Who told you?" Mauve asked with glee, unable to contain her excitement.

"I took a guess, I didn’t see him going nor leaving with her during the last meal." She wanted to add that her brother was also missing but decided not to.

"Well, you’re correct," Mauve replied. She knew she shouldn’t spill too much but she couldn’t help it. It was Mill after all and she had been dying to tell someone all about it.

"Do you know how it happened?" She asked, peering at Mauve.

"Not exactly but I think they took her from Seraphino’s room, through the window." She dropped her voice to a whisper even though there was literally no chance of anyone overhearing her.

"Serves him right," Mill smiled. "She should have never been let into that sort of situation."

"I agree," Mauve replied, nodding vigorously. "I can’t believe the King would do something like that. I just hope she would get back safely."

"You don’t have to worry about that. I am sure she’s safe."

Mauve nodded, "Thank you."

"My pleasure. Would you like me to wait with you until the Primus returns?"

Mill shook her head, "No, I don’t think there is any need for that. It’s already late and I’ll just go to his room and lay there."

Mill looked skeptical for a second but she simply nodded. "If you insist and if anything goes wrong don’t hesitate to scream."

Mauve chuckled, "Jael is just next door."

"Okay," she walked away from Mill and squatted, lifting the bath and the bucket simultaneously.

Mauve could only stare in awe at her strength. Vampires were really very strong.

"Do you think you could help me with the door?" Mill asked.

"Of course," Mauve responded and walked in front of her. She turned the handle and pulled back the door, making sure to shield herself with the open door.

Mill walked out and said, "Thank yo..."

Mauve watched the words dry up in her mouth as she stood in the doorway.

"What are you doing here?" She asked darkly.

"Mill," the voice said with surprise. "I wanted to see the Primus but I heard he is quite busy right now."

Mauve recognized the voice immediately and she frowned. The first time they had met like this, he had been rude to Mill.

"Then don’t loiter, leave," Mill commanded.

"Don’t say it like that. You make it sound like I have bad intentions. I apologize for saying all those nasty things the last time we met here."

"Apology not accepted, leave. I shall forward your message about your intent to see the Primus and he shall let you know when."

"I’d rather just wait for him out here."

"You can’t do that!" Mill replied.

"Why not?" The condescending tone of his voice made Mauve want to jump out of the door and smack him across the face.

"It’s pretty late," Mill replied. "By the time the Primus would be done, there would be no time for a meeting with you."

"You don’t know about that. I guess I will just wait until I can ask him myself."

Silence followed and Mauve felt her heart sank to her stomach. She was sure Otis knew she was behind the door. She wanted to peek and see but at the same time, she knew better than to do so.

Mill didn’t reply. All Mauve heard was the sound of the bucket hitting the floor and Mill stepped back into the room and closed it.

"Mill," Mauve called as the door closed.

"It’s nothing. I just don’t like the way we ran into him. Just to be safe, I’ll stay with you."

"Are you sure?" She asked.

Mill nodded. "Besides, I won’t stay here for too long. Just long enough for him to either give up and leave or the Primus comes out."

Mauve nodded, she would have argued that Mill was probably overreacting but she didn’t want to take any chance.

She would rather it be a false alarm than be quiet and let something happen. The last time she had barely escaped unscathed.

Mauve pulled herself from the wall and made her way to the bed. She dropped to it and Mill sat by the dresser.

She wanted to tell Mill that she could join her on the bed but with how alert Mill seemed Mauve let her be.

She rolled on her side and tried to figure out the situation. She did know that Otis was from Seraphino’s estate, therefore they were close enough.

The fact that he appeared in front of her room the night Vae left was no coincidence. However, she didn’t want to think it might have anything to do with that.

"Mauve," Mill called. "Don’t worry, I’m right here. You don’t have to be concerned about Otis. I am just taking precautions on the off chance that he plans to do something stupid. I doubt that though. He should know better than to mess with you. Unless he wants to face the Primus’ wrath."

Mauve turned to face Mill, she nodded to the vampire’s words, believing it. However, she had seen what Seraphino was capable of, she wouldn’t put anything past him.

"Do you want to go to the Primus’ bedroom? I’ll just stay here for the meantime."

"Are you sure?" Mauve asked.

"Yep, I don’t want you to fall asleep here."

"I am not sleepy," she insisted but simply nodded at the look on Mill’s face.

She gathered herself and rolled out of the bed. Taking her time with each step, she slowly approached the connecting door.

"Don’t forget this," Mill said and stood to her feet, handing the lamp to Mauve.

"Thank you, Mill."

"You’re welcome," she grinned at her.

Mauve closed the door behind her and leaned against it. She wasn’t sure she wanted to be alone with her thoughts but she didn’t want to argue with Mill’s order.

She pushed herself from the door and walked to the bed. Placing the lamp on the table she jumped into bed.

She adjusted and tried to get comfortable but her thoughts were spiraling out of control. She rolled to her back and picked up Jael’s pillow.

Mauve blinked as something caught her eye. It was the scarf she had knitted for him.

She smiled as her eyes rested on it. She quickly placed the pillow back and picked another. She didn’t want him to know she had found out.
