Chapter 511. Charade

Chapter 511: 511. Charade

"You called for me," Louis said as he walked into Jael’s study.

"Not just you," Jael said.

Louis frowned and looked around the study. "Well, it looks like I am the first to arrive." He groaned as he threw himself on the couch, "This better be important."

Jael didn’t respond to this, he just kept his gaze straight ahead as though he was waiting for someone to walk in.

"Who else is coming?" Louis asked at Jael’s silence.

"Danag."

Louis brows furrowed. "This is important, isn’t it?"

"I thought that was already pretty obvious."

"Not really, you would do something like this to piss me off. Calling nearly three hours after sunrise," Louis yawned. "Do you have any idea how hard it is to stay awake?"

Jael ignored him.

"This is about the human Lord Seraphino showed up with, isn’t it? Who is she? I saw the way the personal guards reacted but it was Mauve’s reaction that was more eye-catching. You seemed familiar with her."

"She used to be Mauve’s maid."

"Used to?"

"She left not long after Mauve got here."

"What is she doing here? Under Seraphino’s clutches for that matter. What terrible luck she has! I suppose you have an idea since you stopped Erick last night. Usually, you’d be the one yelling."

"She was a gift from the human King. A token of appreciation for helping them out."

"Wow! Are you sure I won’t be affiliated with this so-called King, maybe I’ll get my own human too?"

"It’s not funny," Jael said.

"Not at all. I am treating this very seriously. Unfortunately, your hands are tied."

"I can see that," Jael said.

"Knowing Seraphino, he’d rather die than let her go. At least it explains his exaggerated show," Louis said with a grimace.

"He once tried to hurt Mauve," Jael said.

Louis’ eyes widened. "And you let the bastard live?"

"He’s a Lord and at the time Mauve didn’t mean as much as she does to me now." Jael’s eyes darkened. Now, it was different. If a hair on Mauve’s head was hurt, he didn’t care who the culprit was. Lord or not, there would be hell to pay.

"Wow! That’s the first time I have ever heard you use your head before your hands. Also, don’t say something like that so casually. What’s wrong with you? I can’t believe she fell for someone like you."

"You’re not helping," Jael commented.

"What did he do to Mauve?"

"He tried to bite her. He didn’t succeed but he hurt her and I asked for his fangs."

"Ah, that explains it. Why did you make it sound like you let him walk away unscathed? You took his fangs for a human." Louis threw his head and laughed. "He is definitely out to get back at you."

"Obviously," Jael said.

"Well, you’re right. So what do you need me for?" Louis asked, his tone turning serious.

"How do we get Vae from him?"

"You can’t be serious? You’re really considering this." Louis looked horrified by the notion.

"I am," Jael replied.

Louis groaned, "You won’t. Besides, she’s a maid, why care? The last thing you need to show is that Seraphino’s act bothers you. Don’t give him the upper hand. You’d lose."

"Why did I think you’d be of help?"

"She’s a maid. You have something bigger at stake here."

"You think I care about the maid."

"Oh shit, Mauve."

"You act all smart but sometimes you can be really slow."

"Forgive me," Louis sneered.

Jael said, "I need options."

"You don’t have any. The only thing is to ask him, he’ll give you his demands which would be hard to fulfill. He will definitely strike where it hurts. You could demand that he lets her go, you are the Primus, you can do that. However, you have Mauve. I am sure Seraphino would let the maid go if you let Mauve go." Louis smirked, his teeth catching the light.

"Completely out of the question," Jael said.

Louis frowned, "You don’t want my help, do you? I can tell you already have something up your sleeves."

Jael scoffed, "Do you think I would rely on your tiny brain? I only called you here on the off chance that I missed something. You just clarified that I didn’t."

Louis sat upright on the couch, "What’s your evil plan?"

"I am not telling," Jael said. "Danag would be here any moment. Hopefully, he would have better ideas than your ass."

"I wouldn’t bet on that." Louis relaxed against his chair. "It’s nice to see you go this far for Mauve, it’s a good look."

Jael grimaced. "What was that? Don’t throw backhanded compliments."

"There was nothing backhanded about it.

"And you should treat her with more respect, she’s the reason you’re here after all," Jael added.

"I have more respect for her than you ever would. That aside, what’s your plan with Mauve? Surely, you don’t intend to drag this charade for longer."

"Charade?" Jael’s eyes glowed in anger as he stared at Louis.

"Yes, charade," he replied, meeting Jael’s gaze without blinking.

"I thought you said I was in love with her. Why is it a charade all of a sudden?"

"Because I am logical. You have your love but don’t forget you’re bound by duty."

"Am I?" Jael smirked.

"You wouldn’t?" Louis asked in horror.

"Wouldn’t what? I have no idea what you’re talking about. Besides, I am sure Mauve would be hurt to find out you think she’s a charade."

"I don’t think that. It’s what it is. You can’t change that she’s human."

"I don’t intend to change that. Danag’s here. I am sure he would have more important things to say than you do."

"I am not saying you should. I am saying don’t act like there’s no problem. That’s what the charade is."

"But there is no problem," Jael smugly replied.

Louis narrowed his eyes, "There’s no talking to you, you only see and hear what you want."
