Chapter 490: 490. Paperwork

Mauve swore as she sat on Jael’s seat. He had stepped out about two hours ago leaving with all these.

For more than thirty minutes, she had stared at the ceiling hoping he would come through the doors any minute from now.

She was tired. Why did she think this was a good idea? Maybe it was the reading in the dark that was getting to her but she had increased the number of candles.

Perhaps it was the fact that no matter how many she read, the letters didn’t reduce or it was the recording part.

This was a lie as she had given up on that by the fourth letter. She could barely write properly, why did she think she could possibly record all of these?

It didn’t take her long to figure out why Jael just wanted the important letter and the rest thrown out. They were a bunch of garbage.

If she read one more letter from Lord Phelan, she would claw her eyes out. All he did was ask about the drug, the squad, any sort of update, his son.

It was the same thing over and over again in different phrases. She was losing her mind.

There were more but Jael was right, they were mostly complaints. It was like they didn’t have anything to do but write letters.

Surely they couldn’t do this. These were Lords, not commoners. Erick must have had his hands full.

Did Jael’s father had to deal with this many letters or were they just being disrespectful to Jael? No wonder he was stuck in his study all day.

"Are you good?" His voice broke into her thoughts.

"Louis!" She yelled, almost jumping out of her seat.

"Thank Goodness," he said and took the seat in front of Jael’s desk. "I was worried you might have died from exhaustion."

"I didn’t hear you come in," she said.

"I know, I wasn’t even that quiet. Is that bad, huh?"

Mauve looked at him with tired eyes. "You have no idea. I have been reading so many letters and I haven’t made a dent in the pile. The worst part is I can’t even remember anything that stood out."

"Erick wanted to toss them out but apparently, you insisted on taking over his work."

"Insisted is a strong term," Mauve said with a groan.

"Don’t tell me you’re regretting this already. You wanted to be useful and you got it."

"This doesn’t feel like I am doing anything useful. I can feel it draining my soul. I know I like reading but this is on a different level."

"Giving up?" He asked.

Mauve didn’t miss the conceited tone to his voice. "Of course not, it’s the first day. I am sure I will get the hang of it soon."

"I am sure," he replied sarcastically.

"You aren’t being very helpful."

"I came to see how you’re faring, be nice to me."

"I don’t even have the energy for a conversation, let alone show you any kind of niceness."

She leaned back onto the chair. Her shoulders felt stiff. She was hunched over for hours, this was expected.

"You can always quit. These letters would be tossed out either way, you don’t have to do this."

"I don’t give up halfway unlike you."

"Ouch! But fear not, I am rooting for you."

The sound of the door opening drew their attention to the entrance. Jael looked at Louis.

"What are you doing here?" Jael asked darkly.

"Don’t make it sound like I am doing something devious. I heard Mauve was here and decided to check up on her. By the looks of things, she doing just fine."

"Jael," Mauve said with a smile but didn’t move an inch. It wasn’t that she didn’t, it was more like she couldn’t.

"Are you okay?"

She started to shake her head but stopped herself in time, "Yes," she gave a stiff smile. "I am just fine."

He frowned, "I think that should be enough reading today."

"I agree," she said without hesitation.

"Of course you do, you look like you’re about to faint," Louis commented.

She glared at him, "Thank you for your keen observation."

"Was it that difficult?" Jael asked as he stopped beside her.

Mauve lifted her eyes to look at his face as he towered over her. He was already incredibly taller than she was now that she was seated; the difference was borderline annoying.

"No, it just needed some getting used to. I spent a lot of time trying to decide which I should document or not. There wasn’t any worth it."

"I told you," he chuckled.

"I know," she murmured.

"You don’t have to do this."

"I told her the exact same thing."

"You two aren’t helping. I started this, I will finish it," she said stubbornly.

"As you wish," Jael gently responded as he touched her cheeks. "Just don’t outwork yourself, the letters aren’t worth it."

She nodded and held his hand to her face, "I know."

"You should be done for the day. It is time for the last meal, I came to get you."

"Okay," she mumbled. "I don’t think I have the mental energy to walk anywhere right now."

"That’s not a problem, I can carry you."

"Never mind," she cried, jumping to her feet.

"Do you hate the idea that much?" He asked with a frown.

"No," she lied.

She wasn’t about to welcome the returning vampires with a show of her in Jael’s arms. As much as the offer was quite appetizing, she would gladly refuse it.

"Well then shall we?" Jael asked.

Mauve nodded and leaned on Jael as he walked her out of the study. Maybe she should have accepted his offer.

She noticed Louis was closely behind them. Jael didn’t seem to mind that he was following them and thankfully, Louis kept his mouth shut.

Halfway down the stairs, the front door was thrown open. Jael stopped immediately, halting Mauve’s movements.

"Who is that?" Louis asked from behind them. "The vampires all returned before the second meal."

"That’s the same thing I’d like to know."
