Chapter 489. I Don’t Grovel

Chapter 489: 489. I Don’t Grovel

"I don’t want you to think you’re the reason things went sour between me and Lord Levaton. That was completely my fault."

Mauve nodded wondering if the Lord and his daughter also thought that or did they hate her. It was annoying to make enemies without even trying.

"I thought he wanted to marry his daughter."

Jael frowned, staring at her weirdly. "Where did you get this idea from?"

"I figured. I am not wrong, am l?"

"You’re not," he said. "I don’t want to. As I keep saying, we didn’t have that kind of relationship. I could never make her my mate."

"Okay." She believed his words. "Can you fix it?" She asked.

"Fix what?"

"Your relationship with the Lord."

"I’m not obliged to."

"Jael, you just admitted this was your fault. The next step is to fix it."

He narrowed his eyes, "I only did that because you had this absurd thought that you were to blame and I wanted to convince you otherwise."

"So, you’ll fix it." She grinned.

"There’s nothing to fix."

"I’m not saying you should grovel," she explained. "I’m saying you shouldn’t give him the cold shoulder."

"I don’t grovel..."

"Yeah right," Mauve sassed and rolled her eyes.

"I don’t," he argued.

"I am sure, considering you were practically on your knees begging me to come back. I am not sure you should say that confidently."

She smirked as she puffed her chest while folding her arms.

"Ah, I see. Is this what it has come to? I suppose you have the upper hand now that you know exactly how I feel about you."

There was a hint of anger in his voice but it was hard to tell if it was feigned or not.

"I am not complaining," she whispered. "I very much like this position and I do want you to talk about your feelings more."

"And what would I get in return?" He asked. His gaze was lighthearted but his tone sounded serious.

"What would you like?" She asked.

There was silence for a while as his eyes scanned her face and then he said, "Whatever you see fit."

She hadn’t said anything back since Jael confessed to her, was he expecting her to say it back? Of course, he was.

She could do that? It shouldn’t be so hard but somehow the timing felt wrong. She couldn’t just blurt it out right now or she could?

She’s never had any issues telling him she liked him before but somehow this seemed so much harder.

He turned his gaze from her to the desk, "I should tell you what you should look out for and ignore the rest."

"Ah, yes," she agreed and adjusted on his leg. "Wait, don’t you think I should sit somewhere else? This must be comfortable."

"Don’t even think about it?" Jael replied without looking at her. "There’s no way you’d sit anywhere else."

"You won’t be able to get any work done this way."

Mauve tried not to show anything on her face as she looked at the pile of letters on his desk.

She could feel even a week of reading and doing nothing else wouldn’t completely get rid of it.

She could definitely see why Jael hated it. The letters were endless. The huge desk was completely covered, there was almost no room for anything else.

"I’d rather not get any work done then," he grinned.

"Jael, be serious."

"I am serious."

"Then what’s the point of me being here?"

He lifted his gaze from the desk and without any subtleness, he proceeded to move his gaze from her face to her neck and didn’t stop until it rested on her bosom.

"Jael!" She exclaimed.

He chuckled, "I am kidding. You’re easy to tease."

"Don’t say that."

"Alright, I might as well put you to good use. These letters are at least two weeks worth. I did tell Erick to stop piling them on my table but he is convinced that I won’t look at them otherwise."

"Isn’t he supposed to document them or something? Put them in the proper order."

"Not really, these are just complaint letters. The Lords have nothing better to do than to tell me all about their opinions and plans but I do prefer this to them showing up on my doorstep."

Mauve winced, she would have thought vampires would have a proper system or was it just Jael’s way of doing things?

"Then what do you want me to do?"

"I would need to reply to some. Mostly updates about important situations and what’s going on in their estates. Lords tend to take care of their problems without my intervention. However, there are situations where I may have to step in or at least reply. So just let me know about anything that has to do with the dealings of an estate as long as it doesn’t sound like complaints."

Mauve frowned, "Is that enough? Surely, I need even more information."

"Ah yes. Throw out any letter from Lord Phelan. It doesn’t matter what it is, I’ll probably hear all about it in the meeting. There should also be a lot of replies to the party invitation, toss those out too, unless there is an excuse for why they can’t attend. I think that should be it."

"Wouldn’t you want me to write something down? A brief description of the letters I tossed out."

"No, that’s more work." Jael sighed.

"It just sounds..."

"Messy?"

"Yes!"

"I absolutely hate paperwork."

"Wouldn’t it be better to get someone else to do it?"

"Are you saying I am doing a bad job?" He asked.

"Of course not! I just don’t think you should toss the letters out."

"If I kept every letter I got, there would barely be any space left in my study. Besides, nobody else can do this cause I still have to write the replies myself."

"It just seems, I don’t know a bit too much to just throw them out without any record."

"How about this? Apart from the important ones, you can deal with them however you want but I don’t want to see them."

"Okay, I think I can do that."

"Good, glad to know we are on the same page."
