Chapter 488: 488. Not The Reason

"Remind me tomorrow night," Jael said and turned his gaze from Erick to Mauve.

"It would be better to reply and get this over with, Sire," Erick tried to explain but it was obvious Jael wasn’t listening.

Mauve didn’t miss the glare Erick threw at her, she couldn’t blame him. Here he was trying to get Jael to get some work done and she was being nothing but a distraction.

She wondered what the issue with Levaton was. She had assumed Jael was on great terms with the Lord. However, that did not seem to be the case.

She would be lying if she said she didn’t notice the change in his expression when Lord Levaton’s name was mentioned.

Did something happen? Or did it have something to do with his daughter, Lady Jevera? She returned Jael’s gaze and she saw he was still looking at her. Could she ask him?

"Tomorrow night won’t be too late," Jael said stubbornly and tucked Mauve’s hair behind her ear.

She bent her head, it was bad enough that she was sitting on his legs, and now this.

"If you insist!" Erick replied.

"Anything else?" Jael asked.

"No," Erick said. "I suppose I can leave now. I wouldn’t want to interrupt your work."

Mauve didn’t miss the sarcasm and she almost felt sorry for him. She knew how annoying Jael could be if he wasn’t in the mood. Unfortunately, this was Erick which meant she had no ounce of sympathy for him.

She was glad his job was difficult, served him right for being constantly mean to her.

"You may leave," Jael said. His dismissal sounded distracted.

Erick didn’t even wait for Jael to finish speaking before he started for the door. The loud sound of the door closing was hard to ignore.

"Did something happen with Lord Levaton?" She asked after Erick left. She didn’t want to ask but she would be lying if she said she wasn’t curious.

His hand froze on her face before he pulled it away. He finally turned away from her and faced the desk. Mauve could clearly see this was a topic he didn’t want to talk about.

"I wouldn’t say that. More like nothing did. Remember the last time he was here?"

Mauve frowned, Lord Levaton has only been here once to her knowledge. "Yes, I think."

"Just before you left," he added. She didn’t miss his wince.

"Oh, yes. Of course, I remember." It was funny how it didn’t hurt as much as it used to.

"Let’s just say I wasn’t the most hospitable during his stay here and he left abruptly in anger. I didn’t say anything about it until almost two months later. He wasn’t very pleased. However, I still don’t get what the problem is. Anyway, Louis said it indicated that I do not have regard for the Levaton family’s support blah blah, so I tried to make amends. I shouldn’t have."

"Why what happened?"

"Let’s just say things between me and the Levatons’ would never be the same again."

"Is it because of me?" She asked with worried eyes.

Jael looked completely taken aback as he turned to stare at her, "No, of course."

"Are you sure?" She asked. "I know you and Lady Jevera were quite close."

Jael’s expression darkened, "Are you asking if it’s because I chose you over Jevera?" Jael asked.

Mauve nodded, glad he had taken the words out of her mouth. There was no way she would have been able to say it out loud.

"Is that what you think? That I chose you over Jevera?" He asked.

"Well, I guess."

He placed his forehead between the space of his thumb and index finger. "I suppose that’s how it seemed but she and I didn’t have that sort of relationship. There was nothing to choose. Therefore, this has nothing to do with you."

Mauve blinked at Jael’s unexpected response. Either there was something wrong with her vision or he was lying.

Anyone could clearly see that Lady Jevera had more than just passing feelings for him and she truly wanted to be his mate. Was he saying that wasn’t the case?

"I don’t understand," she said.

Jael touched his forehead again. "Do I really have to expatiate? I’d rather not. The last person I want to talk about my past sexual escapades with is you."

"I know but I would really like to know."

Jael groaned and looked to the floor, "Can’t we talk about this some other time?"

"No, I want to bury the hatchet. I don’t want to bring it up ever again."

Mauve didn’t like how she sounded breathless. She might as well stamp the word jealous on her forehead because the topic was clearly affecting her.

"My relationship with Jevera was simply physical," he said and Mauve didn’t like the way he stared at her as he spoke. "It’s pretty common with vampires. It is not a problem as long as the other party doesn’t make a rule or promise or whatever but there was none between us. It was something either party could end whenever they wanted."

"That doesn’t sound very nice."

"What do you mean?"

"Are you saying you didn’t know she wanted more?"

"Are we really discussing this?"

"Yes," Mauve replied adamantly.

"But we are talking about Lord Levaton. My issue with him has nothing to do with his daughter."

"This-this is for my own benefit," she said.

"Okay," Jael replied, giving her an odd look. "But that’s really what it is. Besides, things were already awkward between us before you showed up. She could have wanted more but not for the reasons you think. I’m the Primus, every female vampire would be clamoring for the chance to be my mate."

Mauve gave him an unimpressed look, "You don’t have to make yourself sound like the ultimate catch."

"But I am. Are you saying I’m not?" He smirked, moving his face closer to her.

"You’re not!" She bellowed.

"Wet blanket," Jael said and poked her nose.

"Jael!"

He sighed, "I don’t want you to think you’re the reason things went sour between me and Lord Levaton. That was completely my fault."
