Chapter 487. Annoying Husband
Chapter 487: 487. Annoying Husband
Mauve looked up at Louis as she tried to understand his words.
"Do I have to explain what I just said?" He asked.
She nodded.
He groaned, "Basically, you’re already dealing with Jael’s antics. You don’t have to worry about anything else, you already have enough on your plate. You make him easy to deal with. If that’s not enough work then you truly underestimate yourself. You don’t need to help out with the chores or supervision or anything like that. We already have enough hands for that. If you want something to do because you’re bored or whatnot, you can water your plants or knit or something."
"You’re being very condescending."
"I am saying nobody thinks you’re useless. You’re the only one that thinks so."
"Oh," she said. Was this truly the case?
"Yes! Now let me go do my job while you keep dealing with your annoying husband."
Simultaneously the door to the library opened and Jael walked in.
"Husband?" Jael asked with a questioning gaze as he looked from Mauve to Louis.
"Oh your timing is just perfect," Louis replied with a glare.
"Were you talking about me?" He asked Mauve.
"Did you not hear the annoying part?" Louis asked. "Also, Mauve is complaining about being bored, you might want to spend some time with her."
"Bored?" He asked.
"What? Louis!" She turned to Jael, "I didn’t say that."
Jael frowned, "Then what did you say?" He asked, taking a step closer to where she sat.
Louis used the opportunity to slip out the open library doors.
Mauve made a mental note to smack him when next she saw him. Why did she think he wouldn’t do something like this?
"I was simply telling him about how everyone was busy," she whispered.
His frown deepened. "Do you not want to tell me?" He asked as he stopped in front of her chair.
"Well, that’s not it."
"I am listening."
It’s not a problem," she refuted.
"If you had to tell Louis then it is."
She could clearly see his mood change. She couldn’t blame him. If she went on and on about how he kept her in the dark, of course, he’d be hurt if he discovered she was doing just that.
Mauve groaned, "Well, I can’t help but think I haven’t been contributing to the castle. Everyone is so busy, I think I could also do something too."
"You want to help?" He asked with a raised brow.
She nodded, twiddling with her fingers. "Yeah."
"You can help me," he grinned.
"Jael," she almost smacked him. "I am serious."
"So am I. It is good to know your thoughts do align with mine but this is one of those rare times I am not thinking in that direction." He smirked.
"Fine," she said, wanting to move the conversation back on track. "How would I help you?"
"Erick is tired of the indoor job. I don’t blame him, the letters have been incessant. We were going to throw them out but you could help me sort them out."
"Are you sure about that?" Mauve asked, feeling hesitant. "I am not exactly proficient at writing." Her voice dropped a few notches.
"You don’t have to write anything. You just have to read it and make sure it’s important enough for my attention. If it isn’t, you toss it out."
"How will I know which is important?"
"You don’t have to worry about that. I will guide you," Jael said and gently stretched his hand for her to take it.
Mauve forced out a smile as she accepted it. This was what she wanted. Why was she hesitant? She couldn’t help it, a huge part of her felt like she would do a bad job.
She stood to her feet and shook her head, she couldn’t think like this. She wanted something important to do and now that she’s got it, she was getting cold feet. It didn’t make any sense.
Besides, Jael wouldn’t have offered it to her if he didn’t think she could handle it. If she didn’t have faith in herself, she wouldn’t move forward.
She nodded, "Okay, I look forward to it." She smiled brightly.
"Great," Jael said, his expression not hiding his ulterior motive. "Shall we? Wouldn’t it be better to get you started on how things work immediately?"
"Yeah, that would be best." She wanted to get a hang of it as soon as possible. It was just to read some letters, there was no need to be stressed.
She clung onto Jael and he led her out of the library. She thought the castle sounded a bit quiet.
They went down the stairs without running into anyone, going past her room and Jael as they made their way to the study.
Jael pushed the door open and Mauve immediately heard shuffling as someone got to their feet.
It took a while for her eyes to adjust as Jael’s study was even darker than the hallway. How could he see anything in the dark space?
"Sire," Erick said. His eyes strayed briefly to Mauve before he looked away.
"You’re here," Jael said and headed for his seat, his hand still holding onto Mauve.
"I’ve been here for a while now."
"Any news?" He asked.
"Yes!"
"Okay," Jael said and sat down. He pulled Mauve onto his legs. She wanted to protest but she didn’t, she could just move later though she doubted Jael would let her.
"Lord Levaton replied," Erick said.
"Oh, he did. Okay."
"Wouldn’t you like to know the contents of his message?"
"Not really," Jael said nonchalantly. "Except it is something I have to reply to."
"Yes, it is."
"Okay, let me have it," he stretched out his hand.
Erick rushed forward and picked up an open letter from the desk, it was right in front of Jael.
Mauve knew Jael had seen the letter even before Erick had started to speak but for some reason, he refused to acknowledge it.
Erick gave the letter to Jael, he accepted and she watched his eyes do a quick scan.
He placed it back on the table in the corner. Mauve couldn’t get how he had managed to read it so fast in the dark. Her eyes had barely been able to see the words.
"Would you reply?" Erick asked.
