Chapter 482. Louis’ Reaction
Chapter 482: 482. Louis’ Reaction
Mauve watched in horror as Otis walked away after saying those terrible words to Mill. She turned her attention to Mill and Mill’s expression wasn’t what Mauve expected.
"What was that about?" Mill asked with a disgusted look on her face.
"I don’t know and I am sorry about what he said. He wouldn’t have insulted you if it weren’t for me."
"Tsk! Don’t apologize and his words didn’t faze me, it was just so unexpected I didn’t know how to react. Don’t worry about it so much."
Mauve nodded but she knew that would be hard to do. Even though she didn’t care about her father, she would be deeply hurt if someone said that to her.
She winced, this wasn’t the first time she had witnessed someone say something bad about Mill because of her, and it made her feel very awful.
"We should go," she said when Mauve didn’t respond. "It’s been a while since Lord Louis and Danag requested our presence in the library."
Mauve nodded. "Yeah, we should."
To be honest she didn’t know why this was a necessity and she couldn’t help but think that if she had refused Mill wouldn’t have run into Otis.
"Do we really have to do this?" She asked. "I thought you and Louis already concluded."
"Yes but Lord Louis wanted you to be a part of this process on the off chance that Danag might want to change anything. He didn’t want to make any changes you might not approve of."
"I appreciate the thought but I doubt the change would be that drastic enough for my input to be needed."
"Stop saying that," Mill said as they got to the top of the stairs. "Remember, we are only your assistants and you’re the one in charge here."
"If you say so," Mauve said with a stiff smile. She didn’t have any energy to argue.
The doors of the library were thrown open even before they got to the door. Louis walked out, his blonde hair impeccably combed,
Compared to Jael who had a brutish aura around him, Louis was more refined. He was not only easy on the eye but the air around him was comfortable.
The only problem was his personality. Too bad he didn’t wear it on his sleeves like Jael did which made it easy to be deceived by him.
"What took you so long?" He asked but he sounded more concerned than annoyed.
"I didn’t want to show," Mauve said before Mill could speak. This was partly the truth.
Louis squinted his eyes and looked at Mill as though he thought she was lying. It did piss her off a little and she walked past him into the library.
"Danag," she called and rushed to where he was seated. "It’s hard to run into you these days."
He nodded and gave her a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. "I’ve been busy but it is good to see you again, Mauve."
"I know," she replied and took a seat, watching Mill and Louis approach them.
Since Danag told her he was the reason for her leaving, it has almost been like he was avoiding her. She truly didn’t have any ill feelings towards him on the matter. She didn’t think it was his fault in the first place so there was no reason to have any resentment towards him.
However, it was obvious Danag didn’t feel the same way. She didn’t push it though. It didn’t feel like it was her job to do so.
"According to Louis, we want to make some changes?" She asked and glared at him.
Danag shook his head, "No actually, everything is perfect." He lifted the rolled-up sheet and placed it back down. "I already went through it while we were waiting for you."
"Oh," Mauve said.
"I shall begin preparations soonest. I assume you’d want to oversee the construction."
Mauve shook her head, "Not really. I’d rather just see the finished work. It will make more impact for me," she grinned.
"As you wish," he smiled again.
"You should be resting," She said, softly. "I know the last couple of days have been nothing but strenuous."
"Oh, this is no problem. I wanted to conclude the plans today so the work can actually begin."
"I see," she hoped she didn’t sound rude. She just wanted to show her care.
"Don’t worry, I don’t really have to do anything except hand the plans to the people who will work on it."
Mauve smiled and nodded, she turned to Louis wondering why he was quiet only to see his attention on Mill who had her gaze on nothing in particular.
"I guess I should be on my way," Danag said and rose. "Thank you for your effort, Mauve."
"I didn’t do it alone. Mill did most of the work."
She expected Louis to react to the fact that she didn’t give him any credit for the work he did but she was met with silence.
"That’s not true," Mill said. "We all put in an equal amount of work and Lord Louis drew out the plan."
"Well, thank you," Danag said and headed for the door.
"I have to go," Mill announced. "I suppose I could leave Mauve in your hands, Lord Louis. That wouldn’t be too much to ask, right?"
"No, Mill," he replied with a keen gaze.
"Thank you," she whispered and bowed to him. "See you later, Mauve." She waved and Mauve waved back.
"Something happened on the way here, right? That’s why you were late ." He turned his gaze to her.
"I didn’t think you were so perceptive," she responded sarcastically.
She wasn’t sure if could tell him. Mill would certainly not want him to be involved but she didn’t want to keep it to herself. Otis’s behavior had rubbed her the wrong way, he didn’t have any right to talk to Mill like that.
"Perceptive? You’re an open book."
She glared at him, "And you’re rude."
"Whatever, tell me what happened. I can tell it has to do with Mill."
"Then ask her yourself? Why are you asking me?"
"Who else would I ask?" He said.
"Fine," she said.
"Alright, I am listening."
"What was that all about? The thing with the book."
Louis blinked, he was obviously taken aback by her question.
"Did you really think I wouldn’t ask or I would just let it go?" She asked.
"I never said you could ask but that’s not what we are talking about," he replied.
She glared at him, "I will tell you about Mill if you explain."
"I already explained. It’s magic. What else do you want to hear? You obviously don’t want to believe the truth."
"There is no way that’s the truth, you’re just messing with me as usual."
Louis sighed and touched the bridge of his nose, "I told you. I still don’t get why you find it hard to believe me even after everything you’ve been through."
"Because you never tell me anything. I definitely see why you and Jael are brothers but at least, he’s better than you."
Mauve’s chest heaved as she spoke. She wondered why she was getting so bothered. Usually, she would laugh at Louis’ jokes but for some reason, this one wasn’t very funny.
She could almost swear he was messing with her but what if he wasn’t? He has been around, surely he must have run into a few things. However, it didn’t make sense and a lot of things didn’t add up.
"Fine," she added. "You don’t have to lie to get out of this."
"I wouldn’t lie," he said with an intense gaze. "My hands are sort of tied."
"Whatever," Mauve said. She knew better than to push it. He wouldn’t tell her if he didn’t want to. "We ran into Otis on our way here and he insulted Mill. He said the reason his father didn’t want her was because she would take care of me. Not those exact words but the meaning was pretty..."
The words dried in Mauve’s lips as she suddenly felt cold. The temperature has fallen several degrees. It was the same feeling she got whenever Jael was really angry and she didn’t need anyone to te her Louis was pissed.
She could see it in his eyes, it didn’t have the same glow as Jael but it was dark enough for her to feel fear. His face relaxed almost immediately, it was as though it was never there.
"I see," he said casually. "So that’s why she seemed a little dazed. Thank you for telling me."
"Erm, you’re welcome," Mauve said with an awkward smile. "She did say it didn’t piss her off that she was only surprised so it might have caught her off guard."
Mauve felt like she was rambling but for some reason it felt like she had escalated the situation and she was trying to fix the damage.
"Can we continue this another time?" He suddenly asked.
