The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 481. Powerless

Chapter 481: 481. Powerless

Jael frowned as his gaze rested on his personal guards. They looked exhausted. The sad part was that this was only the beginning.

"She almost made one of us stay back," Erick said with a curse. "No matter how many times we told her reinforcement would arrive before the night ends, even though you already had this conversation with her."

"That’s expected," Louis started to say. "Her estate was brutally attacked, of course, she would want to keep at least one of you to ensure their safety should another attack ensue."

"I suppose you’re right," Erick said without further argument.

"Sire," Danag called. "What’s the decision?"

"The same. Getting more security and supplies for Francine’s estate. They would need some time to repair whatever damage was done, we will make sure to help in any way we can."

"Yes, Sire. That IS the only help we can offer," Danag agreed.

"Since the squad has been on a break since the last incident, what was the kid’s name again?" Jael asked.

"Vans," Louis replied with a disappointed look.

Jael completely ignored this. "Therefore I would appoint some guards to take care of their security. Oh, that reminds me, I made a few changes. Otis has been quite curious about the situation, he is in charge. All or any one of you might decide to accompany them, if you like. They will be there for at least a week. That should be more than enough to repair the broken fence. If that’s not enough, I’ll extend their stay to another week."

Danag exchanged looks with Louis who shrugged. "As you wish, sire. When would they set out?" Danag asked.

"In two hours, that should be more than enough time for them to get to her estate before the second meal. Louis, you’ll inform Otis of this, and Damon, you’ll choose the other guards that would accompany him."

"Sire," Danag called with worry in his eyes. Would it be a good idea to put Otis in charge of this?"

"What’s he going to do? Isn’t this what he wants? A chance to go after Palers unhindered. I am giving him a superb opportunity. I am sure he would be delighted."

"Yes Sire," Danag responded.

"However," Louis interrupted. "I don’t understand why the task of telling him falls on my shoulders."

"Send him to my study on your way out," Jael said.

Louis looked like he wanted to protest but Jael was obviously in no mood to listen so he simply nodded and said, "As you wish."

"Is there anything else you’d like to discuss?" Jael asked the room.

Every head shook except Danag. Jael took a deep breath and turned his head to his former head guard.

"What is it, Danag?" He asked, not hiding his impatience.

"Isn’t this a bad omen or sign of something to come? In less than five days, we’ve had deathly attacks from Palers. If this isn’t the indication of something more sinister, I don’t know what is."

Jael gave Danag an odd look, "I would never peg you as one who is superstitious. Considering how you tend to be logical, this is a little disappointing. However, I do see your point but you’re making it more than it should be. Surely, you didn’t expect the Palers to sit back and watch us take them out. This should serve as a reminder to pay attention to security. Being lax would get us nowhere."

"Yes, Sire." Danag bent his head.

"Still," Louis interrupted. "It doesn’t explain a lot of things. Palers usually don’t attack like this. Three hours to sunrise is usually a safe time. The fact that Palers in question were willing to put a risk on themselves is a cause for questions."

"You’re probably right," Jael said nonchalantly. "But this is obviously an answer we would never know and pondering on such will get us nowhere. Whatever we can do to protect ourselves, we should give it our all."

"I guess you’re right," Louis said.

Jael squinted his eyes, Louis’ quick admittance didn’t sit right with him. It was bad enough that all they had was questions and no answers, now they had even more questions.

"Anything else?" Jael asked.

"No," simultaneously echoed in the room before they stood to their feet and walked to the door.

Jael leaned back in his seat as he watched them leave. Less than four minutes later, a knock pulled his attention to the door but he was already aware of Otis’ presence even before he knocked.

"Come in," Jael said as he moved his attention to the letter.

Letters about the incident in Francine’s castle were already pouring in. Jael had to give it to the Lords, they moved fast.

"Your Grace," Otis said with a bow. "You called for me?"

"Yes," Jael said, his gaze still on the letters. He tossed one to the side and picked another. "Come closer."

Otis walked closer to the desk and stood in front of it as he waited for Jael to tell him why he was here. He looked a bit unsure but kept his composure.

"My personal guards are back," Jael said without looking at Otis. "I would be sending a group of guards to Francine’s estate, along with food and the like. They would need all the help they can get."

"Yes, of course." Otis gave a nod. "That’s the right step to take."

Jael raised a brow and for the first time since Otis walked into the room, he raised his gaze from the desk to look at him.

"The guards are to leave in two hours," Jael said and placed his elbows on the table. He leaned forward and rested his chin on the back of his hand. "Your diligence has caught my attention and you’re in charge of the mission. I expect great things from you." Jael smirked and looked back to his desk.

Otis looked taken aback and Jael knew he didn’t expect this. "Why me?"

"Why not?" Jael asked. "Danag will give you all the information you need. You may leave."

"I do not think I am the best person for this job," Otis protested.

"That’s not right. You just have to protect them from Palers for two weeks, nothing different from what you’re supposed to do here."

Jael was reading the letters again. This discussion was pretty much over. There was nothing Otis would say that would get him out of this. Except he wanted to leave the squad and Louis knew Otis wouldn’t want that.

"I do think Danag or one of your personal guards would do a better job."

Jael sighed and dropped the letter on the table. "The fact that you think I asked you a question is irritating. This is an order. You will be in charge of the guards sent to Francine’s estate and you’ll be there for at most two weeks. This way you can get the answers to all the questions you wouldn’t stop asking me. This is for your benefit."

Jael smirked as he stared at Otis, making sure the vampire understood the situation and why he was being sent off.

"Yes, Sire," he said with a stiff expression. "Thank you for your kind consideration."

Jael’s smirk widened, "I am sure I can count on you. Don’t hesitate to inform me should anything go wrong."

"Of course," he said with a bow.

Jael waved his hand dismissing him as he returned his attention to his work.

Otis closed the door behind himself as he walked out of the study. He made sure not to close the door too hard.

He knew this was his fault but he didn’t think Jael would react in this manner. Lord Seraphino would not be happy to hear he would be out of the castle for two weeks.

This was no way to treat a Lord. Jael had more respect for the humans than he did for any of them. He was not fit to be the Primus.

As if his thoughts had drawn her. Otis heard the sound of the doors opening and the human walked out of it. Her maid, a vampire, the one who was rejected by her father, walked behind her. Just how low have vampires fallen that they served humans?

Otis stopped walking immediately as he glared at the human. She clutched her chest immediately and he knew it wouldn’t take much for him to end her life.

"Otis," the reject called.

Otis turned his head to look at her but he didn’t say a word.

"Is there a problem?" She asked with a threatening gaze.

Otis laughed, did she really think she could take him on? "I suppose not," he said. "But I can clearly see why your father didn’t want you. Taking care of a human, just how low would you keep falling?"

Their reactions provide some satisfaction. The look of shock and disbelief was beautiful to see. Otis didn’t miss the hurt look in her eyes.

He turned and walked away before any of them could respond. He didn’t feel so powerless anymore.
