Chapter 477: 477. Another Day

"I thought it would be nice to let you know about the shirt, you didn’t seem very aware."

Louis looked at Jael as if Jael had smacked him and almost immediately he composed himself. "Pretending you don’t know what I am talking about isn’t going to make this go away and I am not leaving until I get an answer from you."

"You could have waited until sunrise. I am sure you know just how tired I am. I’ll excuse the rudeness, you may leave."

"Why later?" Louis snickered. "Because you don’t want Mauve to know. How about I tell her just how much you put yourself in danger, you dimwit! Are you out of your mind? Waiting any extra day wouldn’t have killed you!"

Mauve turned her gaze to Jael and she saw that he wouldn’t meet her eyes. He knew she was looking at him but he wasn’t glancing in her direction.

"Would you not be so dramatic? I got here fine, didn’t I? Don’t make a mountain out of a molehill."

"I will because you don’t ever learn. Would you like me to te—"

A/N: Louis is referring to when Jael’s arm got cut. He was asking if he should tell Mauve the full story.

"Don’t you dare!" Jael’s gaze darkened.

Mauve gasped as the room got colder. She could tell that Louis hit a nerve this time even Louis could clearly see that.

"Okay," he said and took a step. "You shouldn’t take risks like this."

"Are you done?" Jael asked. "You should leave."

"No," Mauve interjected. "What’s going on?"

She looked from Louis to Jael and then her gaze rested back on Louis.

"What? Why me?"

"You brought it up." Mauve could feel Jael’s eyes burrowing through Louis’ skull. She was sure Louis would be dead now if stares could kill.

Louis sighed, "Jael returned a—"

"Are you really going to tell her?"

"Would you rather tell me yourself?" She turned to look at Jael.

"Yes," he replied.

"Okay, goodnight," Louis said and rushed toward the door.

"Don’t think you can just leave after doing this."

"Bye!" Louis grinned and slipped out the door.

Mauve thought it was funny how Louis had been so angry when he stepped in but he didn’t even look half as angry by the time he left.

She knew he didn’t mean any harm and he probably just wanted to help. She was thankful, Jael wouldn’t have told her otherwise.

"I am listening," she said when he didn’t say anything after a while.

He sighed and ran his fingers through his wet hair. At least it had stopped dripping onto the bed.

He looked at her with a pained expression. "Promise you won’t be mad."

"It’s bad, isn’t it?" She asked with her breath caught in her throat. Considering he was repeating her own words.

"It depends on how you look at it."

"What does that mean?" She asked.

"I am fine, that’s what’s important. Exhausted, yes, but it is nothing a little food and blood won’t fix."

Mauve didn’t miss the way his eyes flicked to her shoulder and then back to her face.

"You can drink all you want when I hear what this is about and I can decide after if I’ll get mad or not."

"That is not very fair," he whispered.

"I know but if you had planned to tell me without Louis ratting you out, I wouldn’t have gotten mad at all. I’d rather you tell me than keep it away from me, no matter how horrendous it might be. I can’t help you in lots of ways but I can at least listen. I know that doesn’t mean much but please let me do the little I can."

Jael cussed and pressed Mauve to himself. "Don’t cry. I didn’t tell you cause I know you’ll be mad and mostly because it’s not a problem. Also, don’t say that. You help me in more ways than you know."

Mauve nodded her head, she would have replied but she was too busy scolding herself for almost crying.

He sighed and Mauve frowned, she could clearly hear his heartbeat or was it hers echoing in her ears?

"Louis was angry because I came back alone."

"What?" She asked and pulled away from him to look at his face. "What do you mean?"

"Exactly that," his voice dropped to a whisper.

"Damon, Danag, and Erick aren’t back?" She asked.

He shook his head.

Mauve blinked as she processed his words. He wouldn’t have stood any chance if he had been attacked. Worse if the Paler was more than one.

Mauve swallowed, she could see why Louis was angry because she was, she was so mad, she could almost taste it.

"I am sorry, don’t be mad. I didn’t want to sleep in somewhere strange and I didn’t want to leave you alone after leaving so early without any explanation. I know you’re very angry, I can hear all your blood rush to your head."

Mauve took a deep breath and forced herself to calm down. He did say he did it for her but it was for the same reason she was pissed off.

She didn’t want him taking such risks irrespective of the situation; she knew she would rather wait to see him another day than be greeted with bad news.

"Mauve," he called when she didn’t say anything.

"I am not mad," she replied. "But please, don’t do that again. I missed you, I was worried and I am so glad you’re here I could cry but I’d rather miss and worry about you for another day, another week, another month, another year than ever hear bad news."

Mauve sniffled and Jael pulled her to himself, hugging her tightly.

"I would never put you through that. I know this doesn’t mean much because of tonight but know that the only time I would ever put myself in deliberate danger would be to protect you."

"What?" She pulled her head from his grasp. "That doesn’t make me feel better."

"It should. I love you too much to leave you on your own. I wouldn’t dare."
