Chapter 478: 478. Mix of Emotions

Mauve blinked, her chest felt tight. Jael just said he loved her. What? She couldn’t form the words.

"Mauve," Jael called, "Breath."

She nodded and took a deep breath before hiding her face in his chest. Why would he say something like that? Especially in these circumstances, Jael truly had no tack. She pressed her face against his chest.

"If I knew you’d have this much reaction I would have said it earlier," he replied.

"What do you mean earlier?" She asked but still refused to look at his face. She assumed she would be the first to confess to him, never in a million years did she ever think he would say this.

She didn’t know how to react. What do you say when someone tells you they love you?

She tightened her closed lids. She had to constantly remind herself to take a deep breath.

A knock sent Mauve flying off Jael’s legs. She wanted to get out of the bed but he held her down.

"They will bring it in," he replied.

She nodded and looked away from him, hiding her face. She could tell he was amused, the look on his face had not changed. Why did he look so proud?

Her nerves were all over the place. She didn’t know how to act. It wasn’t that she wasn’t happy, she was so happy she could die.

"Come in," Jael ordered and the door was thrown open.

Mauve barely registered the servants as her thoughts churned. She was surprised he didn’t ask her to say it back to him.

She would, she already knew she loved him but suddenly it felt hard. She was happy, excited, and terrified. It was just a mix of overwhelming emotions.

She glanced at Jael and he looked like he didn’t have a care in the world. Why was she the one panicking when he just confessed his love to her?

Wasn’t this what she wanted to hear? Somehow it fell too soon. Did he say it so she wouldn’t get angry?

No, Jael wasn’t the type to say what he didn’t mean to get out of a situation. Why did it feel so unreal that she was doubting it?

Mauve turned to Jael after the servants left. They had placed the food on a table and brought it closer to the bed.

"Do you really love me?" She heard herself say.

His eyes moved to look at her before his head followed. "Yes." His expression was serious.

She blushed hard, her face redder than ever. She turned away from him and hid her face in her palms. "Don’t say it so easily."

"You asked!" He replied.

"Since when are you so expressive about your feelings?" Her words sounded a bit muffled as her palm was against her face.

"Since today," he replied.

"Today?" Her voice was soft.

He looked away from her and adjusted so he was sitting at the edge of the bed with the food directly in front of him.

"Mh-hmm," he responded. "Mauve," he suddenly called, forcing her to look at him.

"Yes," she replied, peeking at him through her fingers.

"Do you mind feeding me?" He asked. "My hand hurts."

Mauve’s eyes widened and the puppy look on Jael’s face. Just what in hell was going on? First he told her he loved her and now this?

She knew their relationship was better than ever and Jael was really trying his hardest to show her how much she meant to him. However, it still felt a little unreal.

"Okay," she said and pulled her hand from her face. She scooted closer to him, not missing the brief shocked look. He masked it quickly but she had seen it. He was probably lying about the arm ache but it didn’t matter.

Jael watched Mauve as she scooped the rice. "Open up," she said.

She smelt so good it was hard to ignore. He wanted to bury his nose in her hair.

"Ahh," he replied and she giggled. He bent his head so it would be easier for her to reach his mouth.

He didn’t think she would agree to this and had simply asked so it would take her mind off what he said.

Today has been overwhelming in different ways. The death the Palers had left in their wake had been sickening but he was not going to think about that, not today.

She was worth taking the risk back alone. As he stared at her face, he knew he would do it again without hesitation.

He hadn’t planned to tell her like that but when he did, it had felt completely natural. It was funny how he didn’t even know he was in love with her until Louis mentioned and now he was certain.

He had based all his feelings to be completely sexual but that wasn’t the only thing anymore. He knew he had deep feelings for her that had nothing to do with his libido and admitting these feelings made it so much easier to breathe.

He did love her, more than she would ever know, and the idea that she might never get an inkling of his feelings had scared him a bit.

He didn’t want to think about it but he had been forced to tonight. Anything could happen to him, to her, these were dangerous times and there was also the fact that she was human. That was something that could never change.

"Are you sure you don’t want more?" She asked.

"No," he said and tilted his head back to drink the water she had handed him.

He placed the empty cup away and she pushed the table away from the bed.

"I will call the servants to come clear this," she said and started to walk away but he caught her arm.

"No, they will take care of it tomorrow." He pulled her so she would fall on him. He adjusted and laid his back on the bed with her on top of him.

"Aren’t you going to put on any clothes?" She asked.

"Why? You fed me naked. Why is it a problem now?"

"I am not saying it is," she said with a red face. "It’s just—" she sighed. "It’s hard to ignore."

"I am very open to any ideas you have about making it go away," he smirked at her.

"Jael," she cried.

"You’re easy to tease," he said and pinched the bridge of her nose. "You should sleep."
