Chapter 460. Less Than A Month

Chapter 460: 460. Less Than A Month

"Two things. The first one is, I haven’t held up my side of the bet and the other pertains to matters of the castle."

"I keep telling you it wasn’t a bet," she said as she took a seat.

"I will call it whatever I want to call it," Louis replied, sitting across from her.

"Alright, I am listening." She was more interested in what he had to say than starting an argument with him.

"I heard from Jael that he put you in charge of deciding how the exterior of the castle was going to look. Now that the fence is done, the compound should follow. To be honest I was horrified at the state of the castle when I got here."

"That’s definitely number two. Shouldn’t you start in the proper order?" She asked with a frown.

"You didn’t answer my question? Why should I answer yours?"

"Huh? You didn’t ask me a question. You only told me what you heard."

"But you didn’t agree."

"Has anyone ever told you you’re annoying? I can see why Jael can’t stand you. Anyways, yes so what about it?"

"Wait a minute? How come you’re all snarky with me and nice to Jael?"

"That’s not true. I am nice to you too and you didn’t answer my question."

"Ah, yes. You are to get to work immediately because there will be a party in less than a month and everything needs to be ready by then."

"What? Surely, that’s not enough time."

"Don’t worry about that."

"Also, I know I already asked Jael but are you sure it’s a good idea to let me handle something like this?" She asked with a concerned expression.

"One hundred percent. You’d certainly do a better job than Jael."

Mauve gave him an unimpressed look. "I am serious. I shouldn’t."

"You worry about unnecessary things. Besides, isn’t this a good thing? Why are you complaining? I am sure you’re thrilled."

"I am," she replied without hesitation. "But I don’t want to get on anyone’s bad side."

"You will have Mill to help you, she can take all the credit if that will make you feel better."

"And you too," she responded.

"I will only be here to answer questions. Do not expect any more help."

"Yeah, yeah. I guess I will discuss it with Mill and we can start as soon as possible but before then, I’d like to hear all about why you had to leave."

Louis groaned, "I assure you it is not the story you’d expect it to be so do not get your hopes up."

"Okay," she responded.

He squinted his eyes at her before leaning back against his seat.

"As you already know I lost my parents at a young age and Jael’s parents practically adopted me. We grew up together and I found it odd that vampires never moved around. We had all this speed and were stuck in one place. I always want to leave. Well, not leave but I was sure there was more to life than what I already knew. So after stalling for so long, I decided to leave. Jael was completely against it. Our parents didn’t mind as long as I kept in touch, which I did."

He paused and glanced at her as if to make sure she was listening and she was. She was listening to every word and taking note of even the slightest change of expression.

"Well then it got out of hand and the next thing I knew it had been over three decades."

"And you never came back during the entirety of that time."

"Oh, I did. I just never came close enough to the Vampire Regions."

"That means you never came back."

"I guess you could say that."

"Yeah," Mauve replied, feeling underwhelmed.

"I told you it was not the story you thought it would be."

"Then why is Jael so mad at you?"

"Because I left and after a while, I stopped sending letters and that’s because he never responded to any that I sent."

"Did you miss home?"

Louis shrugged, "I would be lying if I said I didn’t but I guess I may have taken it for granted. The fact that it was somewhere I could always return to no matter what and I could pick up things from where I left off made me a bit conceited. I don’t regret the journey but I do regret not coming back even though I could have done so several times."

"So during your journey what did you find?" She asked with bright eyes.

"That’s another story for another day."

"What?" She cried in horror.

"You heard me. Besides, you have so much work to do. I doubt you have the time to chit-chat."

Mauve glared at him but he did have a point. If she wanted to get things ready soon, she needed to start now.

"Fine, I guess I will go get Mill." She started to rise but he stopped her.

"No, I will do that. Stay here. Don’t leave the library," his tone was a little too serious at the last part.

"Okay?" She said with a puzzled expression. She didn’t mind waiting though, his reaction was what threw her off.

He stood up and stepped away from her, walking towards the door. He pushed it open and walked out, leaving Mauve all alone.

She groaned and placed her head on the table. She didn’t know what she had expected when Louis agreed to tell her why he left but the last thing she expected was this.

Unfortunately, she wanted to believe there was nothing more but she couldn’t help the idea that he wasn’t completely honest with her.

He most likely didn’t lie but it didn’t feel like it was the whole story. She wanted to pester but decided to let it go. She didn’t have to know, she just wanted to be closer to Jael’s family.

Mauve let out an even louder groan when she remembered Jael really put her in charge of deciding what the outside of the castle would look like.

She felt honored and troubled simultaneously. It was not a good feeling. She didn’t want to do a terrible job.
