Chapter 459. Old and in Love
Chapter 459: 459. Old and in Love
Mauve was shocked to see Louis at her door just before the first meal. "What are you doing here?" She asked as Mill led him into her room. "Where is Jael?" She tried to see if Jael was behind Louis as he walked him.
"I don’t know," Louis said with a shrug, "But knowing him, he should be here any minute from now."
She frowned and stood from where she sat by the dresser. She started to approach Louis with concern on her face. "Is something wrong?" She asked.
"No, nothing at all. I just wanted to inform you that I’d like a word after the first meal."
"You didn’t have to come here to say that," Mauve heard Jael’s voice seep through the still partly opened door.
"Sire," Mill said and bowed.
"Jael," Louis turned and beamed at him.
"Why are you here?" Jael asked darkly, ignoring Mill’s greeting.
"I just said it."
"Jael," she grinned and skipped to where Jael stood. "Hi," she said as she got into his personal space.
He looked down at her and his hardened face softened immediately. Using one hand, he pulled her to himself and pressed her against his body.
"Are you ready?" He asked, making no attempt to release her from his grasp.
She nodded and pulled away. Jael frowned but his expression quickly changed when she clasped her palm around his.
"I am hungry," she whispered.
"I am sure," he grinned at her and she blushed.
"Jael," she scolded as she kept her head down.
"Shall we?" He asked.
She nodded and Jael led her towards the exit. Turning her head back she said to Louis, "I will be at the library after the first meal, we can discuss then."
"Okay, Mauve." He responded and followed after them.
Mauve returned her gaze to Jael to see him glaring at Louis. She tugged on his arm, drawing his attention to her.
Of course, she didn’t expect things to go smoothly between them but at least Jael was putting in some kind of effort, she would take it.
She leaned into him, feeling very happy, safe, and secure. The past days have been good for them and she could tell it would only get better.
"You don’t have to follow so closely behind us," Jael suddenly said. "You can walk ahead."
"I am not complaining," Louis said stubbornly.
"I am," Jael responded.
"Well, that has nothing to do with me."
Mauve chuckled, drawing Jael’s attention to herself. She thought it was nice that he had someone he could argue with. Somehow she doubted they would butt heads forever.
"Is something amusing, Mauve?" Jael asked.
"Oh no," she replied with a straight face. "I just remembered something."
"And what would that be?" He asked.
"It’s a secret. We should walk faster," she changed the subject. "I am starving."
Mauve sat in her usual seat as she watched the servants serve out her meal. She was starving, to say the least.
The aura around the table seemed a bit brighter. Well, more than two days have passed since the incident. It was expected that things would be better now.
She glanced at Jael only to find that he was already looking at her. She immediately looked away, fearing that her expression might betray her especially when he was looking at her like that.
As usual, she was quiet during the duration of the meal. She didn’t get any stares from Otis or any of the other vampires who didn’t agree with her presence and she wondered if they were starting to get used to her being here.
She didn’t dwell on the thought too much as she knew this was nothing but wishful thinking. Of course, they still hated her guts.
"You said you wanted to go to the library after eating, I will walk you there."
Mauve turned her gaze to Jael. She had just finished wiping the corners of her lips at the end of the meal. She opened her mouth to respond but Louis interrupted.
"You don’t have to bother yourself about such trifling matters. I am headed to the library myself, I will walk her there."
Mauve had to hold her gasp in at the look that Jael gave to Louis.
"Never mind," Louis added. "I think there is something I need to discuss with Kieran. I will meet you there soon enough."
Mauve’s lips formed a thin line as she gave Louis a sad look, nodding her head to his words. "Of course."
"Shall we?" Jael asked as he stood to his feet and stretched out his palm.
She nodded, taking it but not without noting the looks from the table. Did he really have to cause a scene each time?
As soon as her palm touched his, he pulled her into an embrace and slowly let her go before leading her out of the dining hall.
Mauve groaned internally. She wasn’t complaining but a part of her couldn’t help but be a little cautious. She didn’t want to piss off anyone more than she already has.
"So what’s the meeting all about?" Jael asked as they approached the stairs.
"Huh?" Mauve asked. It took her a while to process the question as she was lost in thought.
"You told Louis to meet you up in the library."
"Oh, that! I am not sure. He didn’t say why. Are you going to be busy today?" She changed the subject.
"Not too busy for you," he responded.
Mauve giggled and they went up the next flight of stairs. "Would you like me to come get you in time for the second meal?"
"Yes," he said, locking eyes with her. "Tell Louis to bring you to me."
"Okay," she smiled up at him as they stood in front of the door.
He bent his head and Mauve’s breath caught in her throat. She knew he was going to kiss her and she wasn’t complaining one bit.
His familiar cold lips touched hers and Mauve stood on her tiptoes to give him full access.
"Oh, come on, get a room."
Mauve instinctively pulled away from Jael, breaking the kiss at the sound of Louis’ voice. She heard Jael cuss out loudly.
"It’s rude to sneak up on people," Jael said as he shielded her, showing Louis his back.
"Sneak?" Louis said. He sounded flabbergasted at the accusation. "You knew I was coming before I climbed the stairs."
"Whatever," Jael said and lifted Mauve’s chin. He kissed her soundly and pulled away, his hand still on her chin. "I will see you later."
She nodded with red cheeks. It was hard to say anything in this situation.
"If he so much as annoys you, let me know and I’ll have his head on a platter," he added, his hand on her chin didn’t look like it was leaving her face any time soon.
Mauve nodded as she looked up at Jael, trying hard to hold her smile. She couldn’t see Louis from this angle, she could only hear his voice.
Louis rolled his eyes, "We both know who’s the annoying one here."
Jael turned his head briefly to look at Louis before pulling away from Mauve. Mauve could clearly see his hesitation and she knew if he had his way he wouldn’t leave.
This made her a bit happy and she found herself grinning brightly at him as she waved.
He winked at her and made his way down the stairs, she was still waving even though she couldn’t see him anymore.
"Oh, to be young and in love," Louis said as he walked closer to her. He stood in front of the library doors and made to push it open.
"Have you ever been in love?" She asked him.
He stopped with the library doors half open. "That’s an odd question."
"Is it?" She asked with an inquisitive gaze. "Should I take that as a no?"
He shrugged and pushed the doors all the way and walked into the already-lit hall.
"What’s odd is that you have lived this long and haven’t experienced love."
Louis paused and turned around to look at her with a shocked look on his face. "Did you just... Did you just take a jab at me?" He asked in amusement.
"Maybe," she grinned.
"Hah! Sometimes you show just how you can handle Jael. It’s nice to see. And bold of you to assume I am old."
She gave him an impressed look. "You’re at least a century old. That’s old old."
"Not to vampires. Technically, I’m still in my twenties. How old are you?"
"I turn nineteen in a few months," she replied.
"You’re a kid!" He yelled out in horror.
She glared at him. "Not funny."
"I am sorry. I knew you were young. I just didn’t know how young. The guy you’re married to is almost a hundred and fifty years old."
"Louis," she called.
"I am teasing," he said. "Or not."
"Whatever, why did you want to talk to me?" She asked.
"Two things, the first one is I haven’t held up my side of the bet and the other pertains to matters of the castle."
