Chapter 458. Getting Along

Chapter 458: 458. Getting Along

"For goodness sake, you couldn’t pretend you weren’t bored during the meeting," Louis scolded as Jael sat behind his desk.

"What are you talking about?" Jael said, feigning ignorance. His hair was tied away from his face but a few strands were becoming loose.

"Whatever," Louis said as he took a seat.

Kieran sat beside him and on the opposite side was Erick. Damon and Danag stood a few feet away from them.

Danag stood on the left side while Damon stood on the right. They both had their hands clasped behind them as they stood.

"The meeting is over, you all didn’t need to follow me here," Jael said as he pretended to get to work. "Except there is something else you’d like to discuss."

Jael winced as he stared at the pile of letters on his desk. He knew he wouldn’t reply to one-tenth of them.

"The party isn’t a bad idea," Louis started to say.

Jael paused and slightly raised his head from his desk to look at Louis. Their eyes met, "And what does that have to do with anything?"

"I can tell you completely dismissed the notion but you shouldn’t," Louis continued.

"I am not going to throw a party when we have Palers to deal with."

"I knew you were going to say that," Louis scolded. "You never really care about these things. Being bullheaded isn’t the right approach in this situation."

"I blame Mauve," he said and returned his attention to the table. "You would have been gone hours ago."

"Maybe," Louis said with a shrug. "You didn’t have to do what she wanted. You could have sent me away. Hell, you still can."

Jael raised his head to glare at Louis briefly before turning away. "I am not throwing any parties. You can all leave except Kieran."

"It doesn’t have to be right now," Louis said stubbornly. "Just give the Lords something to look forward to."

"For people who do almost nothing, they sure know how to make demands."

"How about we vote, all in favor raise your hands. If you’re against it, keep your hands down," Louis suggested.

As he spoke, he raised his hand prompting Danag, Erick, and Kieran to do the same. Only Jael and Damon didn’t budge.

"I guess it’s decided then."

Jael glared at Louis, "No one made you lots the deciding crew and I can’t believe you’re going along with his antics, Kieran."

"I will take anything at this point to get the Lords off my back. They won’t stop sending me letters. Repetitive letters. I’ve answered more questions about when they would get their ration of the drug than anything else and they don’t even sound like they care about it. They just want to pick at it." As Kieran spoke, Jael could really see how exhausted he was.

"It doesn’t have to be right now and you can use the opportunity to make amends with Lord Levaton," Danag chimed in.

Jael shifted his gaze to Danag and the room went silent. The air sizzled and for a minute everyone tensed up.

"I will think about it," Jael responded. At this point, he was willing to say anything to get them all out.

"That’s good enough for us," Louis responded.

"Now if you have said all that you need to say," Jael replied while keeping his eyes on the open letter. "You should leave."

"I suppose we should leave you to your task." Louis slowly rose to his feet and bowed his head. "Thank you for taking the time to listen to our humble request."

Jael didn’t miss the sarcasm in Louis’ tone and it pissed him to no end. "Enough of the act Louis, it’s starting to piss me off."

Louis grinned, "That wasn’t my intention."

"Whatever," Jael said and looked away from them.

He could never catch a break. All he wanted to do was spend his time with Mauve but here he was dealing with their demands.

Louis quickly made his way to the door and the guards followed after him, each bowing to Jael before leaving him and Kieran alone.

"I haven’t had the chance to have a proper conversation with you since you got here," Jael said as soon as the sound of the door closing ceased.

Kieran yawned lightly, "It has been quite rowdy."

"I apologize."

"It’s not your fault, Sire."

"It partly is. You don’t look like you have gotten any sleep in days."

"Weeks at this point, finishing this batch of the drug took a lot more of my time than I anticipated it would. It didn’t help that it was hard to find a key ingredient."

"Well, you didn’t have to push yourself. You could have taken your time. I am sure the journey here must have been hectic."

"Well, it is a good thing I did because I got here in time to treat the lad. So all is well in the end."

Jael nodded. If Kieran had not been here there was a likelihood that kid wouldn’t have survived. His injuries were so bad even blood wouldn’t have been enough.

"I see you and Louis are getting along fine," Kieran said. His expression was a little hard to read.

"Getting along? Surely, you jest. Unfortunately, in this case, my hands are tied. That’s the only reason I can condone his presence."

"I am glad," Kieran said and stood to his feet. "I was worried your relationship was irreparable but I’m glad that is not the case."

"You shouldn’t forgive him so easily, Kieran. He left for so long."

"I haven’t," Kieran said with a soft smile. "However, it is good to have him back. I shall take my leave now. I haven’t gotten any rest since before I got here." He yawned briefly, "Rest will do me some good."

Jael nodded, "Of course, let the servants know if you need anything."

"Thank you, Sire." Kieran bowed his head and was gone before Jael could reply to his words.
