Chapter 457. A Party?
Chapter 457: 457. A Party?
Jael sat at his usual seat in the dining hall. On his left was Louis, on his right was an empty seat Mauve had been occupying but she left about five minutes ago.
The meeting started immediately after and Jael found that he wasn’t paying any attention but it wasn’t like he was missing anything.
So far, it was just Danag giving a brief explanation of what had happened during the past couple of days. To be honest, he would rather not talk about it now but the Lords who were a part of the operation insisted.
He looked over to Kieran, the young lad didn’t look like he had gotten much sleep in a very long time and Jael was certain that was the case.
After working hard on making more of the drug and making the long trip here, he didn’t even get any chance to rest before he had to deal with the vampire that was attacked.
Jael grabbed his forehead. He hadn’t expected things to go very smoothly but the whiny Lords weren’t helping the case.
To make matters worse, he didn’t feel like he was making a dent in the war against Palers and he could tell a lot of them would be happy to see him fail.
"Vans’ situation was pretty unfortunate," Otis said.
Jael blinked at the sound of his voice. He forced himself to listen to the conversation. He could tell Otis was about to say something that would piss him off. While Lords at the table nodded to his words, Jael kept his expression neutral.
"However, considering how sketchy the entire system is, it is no surprise that this happened. We are throwing young vampires who have never gone against a Paler in their entire lives to battle. To make matters worse the drug isn’t completely foolproof. There is no proper way to administer it and the loopholes surrounding it are a little too much to ignore."
"What are you trying to say, Otis?" Jael asked, his brows dipped as his gaze darkened.
"I am saying what happened yesterday shouldn’t have occurred. What’s the point of this if it won’t keep vampires safe? We could have lost one."
"You’re still not making much sense, Otis." Jael’s mood was soured at his point.
"Do the lives of vampires mean nothing to you?" Otis reinforced.
Jael groaned. "One serious injury and I get an earful. It’s war, Otis! If you thought everyone would scale through this unscathed you must be delusional. The fact that this is the worst that has happened since we started actively hunting Palers is a good sign. Vampires die endlessly without going against them and somehow you expect nothing bad to happen. I am pretty sure you all knew what this entailed when you signed up for it. Don’t chicken out now that it’s not the merry ride you thought it was going to be. News flash if you attack, best believe they will strike back. Thinking you won’t get hit is ridiculous."
"What the Primus is trying to say is, there is no reason to panic," Louis interrupted. "This is to be expected. Reacting in this way isn’t going to help anyone’s case. It should only strengthen your resolve in the fight against Palers. This should make you stronger. If we run in the face of danger, we won’t get anywhere. Thankfully, Vans didn’t get any more injuries because he wasn’t alone. Playing your path dutifully is the only way to minimize damage. Yesterday was unfortunate and unexpected. I do pray it won’t happen again."
"Prayers won’t help our case here. There has got to be a better option than the one we currently have. If there isn’t a surefire way to kill Palers we might as well be beating around the bush. This war will never end."
Jael opened his mouth to speak but changed his mind. There was no point. Those that were against him would forever remain so irrespective of the outcome.
"It is not from a lack of trying," Kieran said and got to his feet.
The hall immediately went silent and Otis leaned back on his seat. All eyes turned to Kieran.
"We can’t treat the progress we have made these past couple of months as insignificant. We are getting closer to figuring out a way to end Palers for good. I ask that you do not lose hope but rather patiently do what you can now. I apologize for the delay in creating more of the drugs but I’ve made enough to last a very long time. Though the application process is dangerous, I do guarantee its effect. Thank you."
He bowed his head and took to his seat just as a round of applause echoed in the hall. Jael tried not to roll his eyes. The Lords were spoiled in his opinion and constantly sucking up to them would only make it worse.
However, if this would bring peace and as long as they weren’t expecting such treatment from him, he could allow it.
"Is there anything else that anyone would like to speak on?" Louis asked.
"A party," Corbin announced.
"What?" Jael asked.
"To take our minds off the current situation. I believe a distraction would be beneficial."
"I second that," Otis said with a nod. "It has been a while since our Sire held a party and considering the last Primus was known for this, it’s a bit of a shame."
Jael blinked and blinked again. He was about to say what he thought about that when Louis caught his eyes and shook his head.
"That’s not a bad idea and I am sure the Primus would work towards that," Louis said and glanced at Jael.
Jael raised an eyebrow as his eyes met Louis. As badly as he wanted to say something about the suggestion, he simply nodded his head.
If a party was going to give them something else to talk about instead of being on his case, they could have that.
"That being said, is there any IMPORTANT matter that needs discussion?" Jael asked.
