Chapter 442. Louis & Jael
Chapter 442: 442. Louis & Jael
Jael closed the door softly and his eyes met with Louis. "You’re still here," he said darkly.
"Don’t sound so cold." Louis responded as he pushed his back away from the door. "Someone has to keep an eye on her."
"It doesn’t have to be you," he replied. "I have enough guards for that."
"The ones she’s familiar with are busy dealing with Palers. Would you prefer a random guard took over this job?"
"Random?" Jael asked in horror. "They are my guards. They are only random to you because you haven’t been here long enough."
Louis sighed, "Fine, whatever you say. I am just saying you know I will do a good enough job. You don’t have to sound so hateful just because you have issues with me."
"I don’t have issues with you, Louis. I just find it really weird that you’re going this far for her, a human."
"I could say the same about you."
"No, you couldn’t. My relationship with her doesn’t concern that."
"Are you sure about that?" Louis asked. He didn’t look like he was about to back down even though Jael was walking closer to him.
"I am!"
"This doesn’t have to be like this. I don’t understand why you’re being so stubborn. We’ve known each other longer than I have been away, I am sure you can let it go."
"That’s not what I am talking about."
"But that’s the only reason why you’re against me watching over her."
"No it isn’t. I am wondering why you’d even do this in the first place."
"Are you kidding? She’s important to you, you twat! Which automatically means she’s important to me. The fact that you think there is some sort of ulterior motive involved is sickening."
"Are you saying there isn’t?" Jael asked.
Louis blinked at his question. "No," he said but he didn’t sound so confident. "Well, I wouldn’t call it an ulterior motive because I would still want to keep her safe regardless."
"At least you’re willing to admit it. Thank you for your kind offer but I would like to say I can handle it. I really would prefer it if you left. We have been doing fine without you. Made so much progress as you can see. You can leave."
"Really? Then explain the scars on her shoulders. You could have prevented that." Louis shot at him.
Jael’s face paled immediately before they hardened.
"That came out wrong," Louis said and took a step back. "I apologize. I shouldn’t have said that. I was angry."
"I don’t care!" Jael said and walked past him. "Leave!"
Jael winced as he rushed down the stairs. He didn’t like the fact that Louis’ words echoed in his head. However, that wasn’t the part that bothered him.
It was the fact that it felt like Louis was blaming him for his parents death than he was about the incident that happened to Mauve.
His parents death wasn’t nearly his fault. It was his mother’s cousin, Lady Marceline’s fault. If she hadn’t called his mother out that night, they wouldn’t have died.
Jael heard a loud ringing sound in his ears as he got down from the stairs. The one thing he did not want to think about. The one thing that made him so angry.
He had been pissed about them suddenly leaving and his mother had said if he wanted her to stay she would. He had adamantly said no.
"Jael!" Louis’ voice reached just as his hand pulled in backward. "I didn’t mean that!" He said. "I am so sorry. I know all this is my fault, I take every bit of the blame and I don’t expect you to accept me with open hands simply because I came back but you and Kieran are the only family I have left. I really cannot afford to lose either of you. So please, however long it would take, I will try to do my part and I do hope you can forgive me."
"You’re right," Jael said and pulled his hand from Louis’ grasp. "It’s my fault."
Louis looked confused for a second, " No, it’s not. There are very few things we have control over. I am glad she is fine but it was in no way your fault. I am just an asshole. I just wanted to get back."
"The night they left," he said, looking Louis in the eye. "I could have stopped them. They didn’t have to leave."
Louis’ expression changed as he realized what was happening. "No, it’s not your fault."
"Maybe but it doesn’t mean I don’t share some blame. You should leave. You’ll be better off in Xanthus castle. There is nothing for you here."
"Shut up!" Louis scolded. "You alway do this. Decide by yourself what is and isn’t. It has been more than a decade. You can’t bring them back and I’m sorry I wasn’t here to share the grief with you but I promise I am not leaving this time."
Jael stared hard at him, "You should have shown up when it was important but now it doesn’t matter. You’ll be gone as soon as Kieran gets her."
He started walking again, heading for the front doors. The guards adjusted, preparing to open the door for Jael as soon as he was close enough.
"Jael," Louis said softly. "Would you really prefer it if I wasn’t here?" He asked.
"Yes," he said without stopping or slowing down.
Louis sighed loudly. "Alright. I will leave as soon as the sun sets and I promise you will never hear from me again."
Jael stopped but didn’t turn around. "You don’t mean that," he replied.
"I do."
Jael scoffed, getting close enough to the front doors. The guards threw them open and bowed their heads.
"Do as you want. I don’t really care."
"Okay," Louis said to the sound of the door closing.
Jael slowed down his footsteps. He expected this but it was better for Louis to leave now than to have better expectations.
Louis stood at the bottom of the stairs as he caught the sight of something moving. He looked up to see Mauve looking down at him.
"How long have you been there?" He asked.
"I just got here," she said with a sad look on her face.
"I thought you wanted to get some rest before the second meal," he said as he started to climb up to meet her.
"I did but I couldn’t."
"Were we that loud?" He asked with a sad chuckle.
She gave him a nod, "I couldn’t help but overhear."
"That means you heard what I said about your wounds."
She nodded, "Yeah."
"You must hate me," he said as he got to the top of the stairs. "But that’s fine you’re not the only one."
"I don’t think Jael hates you and I don’t hate you though I still think that was very insensitive of you."
He groaned as he groaned as he rested his back on the railing. He placed his palm on his forehead, hiding his eyes from her.
"I know. How do you think I feel now that I know you overheard me," he whispered.
"I can pretend I didn’t hear that," she said with a smile.
"Aren’t you nice?" He said, looking at her through his fingers with a smile.
"I am not. I can tell you didn’t mean it."
"That makes one of us. I might have meant it in the moment."
"Well, you apologized and you look like you hated that you said it so I believe you didn’t mean it."
"Thanks but you don’t have to go this far to make me feel better. I haven’t been nice to you."
"Well, you’ve been shitty to everyone so that pretty much means you’re a terrible person but since it’s isn’t just to me, it’s acceptable. Also, you’re still nice than Erick so that a bonus point."
"You hate him that much?" Louis asked, taking his hand from his face.
"I wouldn’t say hate. It’s more like a mutual dislike. He doesn’t like me and I feel exactly the same. So I guess that makes it alright. But we aren’t talking about Erick."
"Yeah, we are talking about this."
"I don’t want you to leave and as much as Jael would hate to hear this. I actually like you."
Louis threw his head back and laughed, "Yeah, Jael would hate that. If I didn’t already have enough reasons to get kicked out of the castle, I do now."
"I am serious."
"I assure you, I take you seriously but as you can see, nothing can be done. I leave as soon as the sun sets. It was nice to know you." He said and pushed himself from the railing.
"Are you really going to give up?"
"What?" He turned to her as he stopped his movements.
"You heard me."
"Yeah and I am wondering if you have been paying attention to what’s going on."
