Chapter 441. A Tiny Scar
Chapter 441: 441. A Tiny Scar
"You didn’t mind spending time with him even though he should be a complete stranger to you. You humor his compliments and not once have you been scared of him. In fact, you seem to be very at ease with him."
Mauve looked at Jael unsure of how to respond to this. He wasn’t wrong but she didn’t think he was paying this much attention to her that he would notice such. She had barely spent that much time in Louis’s presence.
The fact that he was saying all this meant he had been paying close attention. She wasn’t sure if she should be flattered or annoyed.
"He is nice to me," she replied for a lack of what to say.
"Are you saying I am not?" He asked darkly.
"I didn’t say that Jael. I am just saying it’s a bit hard to be rude to him if he isn’t rude to me."
"Are you nice to everyone that’s nice to you?" He asked, obviously not dripping the subject.
"Pretty much," she replied with an enthusiastic nod but by the look on Jael’s face that was not the response he was expecting from her.
"I don’t want to make a big deal about this but I would prefer if you didn’t hang out with him so much."
"You say hang out like I am actively seeking him but there was no way I could turn him away when he was offering to stand guard for me. Besides, if you didn’t like that you would have chased him."
"So this is my fault?" He asked.
She squinted her eyes at him. "Jael," she cried. "I didn’t say that."
"I know." He let out a loud groan. "There is no reason to be cautious of him. I just don’t like how he is being so friendly to you."
"I don’t think it is such a bad thing. I think he might be trying to get on your good graces. Why won’t you try to make amends?" She asked with a worried expression.
Mauve was happy that a fight had been averted. She had been a bit worried that this would have blown out of proportion.
"Because it is a little too late for that. He was quite comfortable being away. He has no right to show now and expect me to act like nothing happened."
"Do you know why he left? I am sure it must have been important."
"Nothing is more important than family," he replied and touched her cheeks.
Mauve blushed. Did he mean she was his family? Wouldn’t that be nice?
"Enough about Louis! How was gardening?" He asked.
"You already asked me this."
"Sorry, I am trying not to ruin the mood, any more than I have.
"You haven’t," she replied and leaned onto him.
"That’s good."
"What would you like to do now?" She asked
"You are asking me?" He said with a smirk.
She nodded, her face was against his chest so she couldn’t really see his face.
He adjusted her head so she was looking at him again. "You know exactly what I would rather be doing."
Mauve’s eyes widened a little as she realized what was about to happen. She didn’t protest when he closed the distance between them and brought his lips down onto her.
She kissed his back, rushing after his lips as if it was water and she stuck in the desert for too long.
Jael pressed her body against his. She felt his fangs grow in her mouth and she smiled a little.
Suddenly, he broke the kiss and moved to the lying position. Pulling her against himself.
"I can’t stay with you for very long," he replied. "Mill should be here soon. I have to join the guards for patrol before lunch. We will try to get rid of any Paler we might come across."
She nodded her head, his explanation did not exactly give her a proper reason for why the kiss ended so quickly but she didn’t want to look so desperate.
Was it because they were away for quite a while? She couldn’t get enough of him and she didn’t understand this.
Was she the only one feeling the urgency? She raised her head to look at Jael’s face.
He frowned slightly. "Is something wrong?"
"No," she replied. "Just be safe, okay?"
"I know, I will. You don’t have to worry about a thing."
"Yeah," she said but not with as much confidence as she usually would. Now that she heard he had been injured. She couldn’t help but think about it.
"Can I see it?" She suddenly asked.
Jael blinked. "See what?" He asked.
"Where did you get injured?"
"It’s unsightly."
Mauve gave him an unimpressive look. That was a lie. If it was that bad she would have noticed when he was naked either before they slept or after they woke up but she didn’t.
It wasn’t as bad anymore.
"Still," she replied. "I want to see it. Would you show it to me?"
If you insist." He said with reluctance written all over his face.
Somehow Mauve knew if Louis hadn’t told her. Jael would have probably never mentioned it and that saddened her a little.
He pulled on the ropes around his neck, tugging his shirt enough to make it loose. She got off his body to give him room.
He sat upright and pulled his shirt off his body. Mauve watched his every action. She thought he looked thinner. His muscles were still intact but something seemed off.
He gave her a stern look before he adjusted his arm and showed it to her. It was above his elbow which explained why she hadn’t seen it the night before.
Not only that there was almost no scar, just a light mark of healed skin. She could tell it would fade soon enough.
"You said it was unsightly," she said.
"I meant, it should have never happened in the first place."
She squinted her eyes at him, still confused as to why he had been so secretive about it. "It looks like it will be completely gone in a few days. It’s a bit hard to believe your hand was almost severed."
"Vampires heal fast. As soon as I started feeding again, it started to heal. Sunlight is the only thing that takes a toll on us. It doesn’t matter the amount of blood a vampire takes sunburn will take time to heal."
"I am glad," she said with a soft smile. "I was really worried."
"I know and I didn’t want you to worry or take it that I won’t be able to look after you anymore or protect you."
"What? I would never think that." She said and laid into his chest.
"I know but I can’t help it."
She sighed suddenly feeling tired. It couldn’t be that she hasn’t gotten enough sleep, right?
"You’re tired," he said.
She laughed. "You can tell?"
"Yeah. You should get some rest. It must be because you stressed yourself even though you just got here."
She nodded. She would probably need to rest. Standing on her feet for that long was more tiring than she had thought it would be.
"I will come back to get you when it’s time for the second meal. Get some sleep. You need it and there is no need to rush yourself you’re not leaving any time soon. You’re here to stay."
Mauve grinned as she lay on her chest. The sound of that was pleasing to her ears. She knew didn’t clear half of the things wrong with that sentence but for now she would care.
All that mattered was that Jael wanted her to be next to and that was all that would continue to matter. She would deal with the other problems later.
"I should go," Jael said after a while. "Mill should be here soon. I will tell her not to bother you. Don’t leave your room. I will be back for you."
She nodded in response to his words. She didn’t know if it was because she was lying on his chest but she suddenly felt so sleepy.
Maybe it was a bad idea to do all that work so quickly. She yawned slightly.
"I wish I could stay with you. You will lay on my chest until you wake up."
"I couldn’t ask you to do that." She cried.
"You’re not asking. I want to do it. Alas, that’s not possible. I have to leave," he said with a sad tone to his voice.
He carefully adjusted her to the side before lifting himself from the bed. He gave her one last look.
"Be safe," she said.
He nodded and turned away from her heading for the door.
Mauve heard the sound of the door closing just as her heavy eyes closed. She was sleepy. She couldn’t comprehend why. She shouldn’t be so tired just yet.
However, considering all that her body had been through these past few days, it was expected. She blushed as she recalled what had happened. That was definitely enough reason for her to be tired.
