The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 440. Jealous

Chapter 440: 440. Jealous

Mauve wiped her hands on the napkin as she stood in the middle of the kitchen. She had just washed the dirt from gardening off her fingers. Thankfully, she had managed to not get her outfit dirty.

The servants looked busy, she could tell they were starting up to prepare for lunch even though that wasn’t until another three hours but since there were more people at the castle, they would need that much time to prepare food for everyone.

Mauve noticed Mill wasn’t anywhere in the kitchen. There were a few servants she could recognize but they all kept their distance from her.

It could be because of her or the fact that Louis was in the kitchen too. He could have waited outside, she didn’t see why he had to follow her in here.

"Thank you," she said to the servant as she gave her back the napkin.

The servant merely nodded and then rushed away from Mauve. Mauve looked around one more time. There was no sign of Mister Herbert, she figured he wasn’t here yet.

There were a few servants clustered around the table slicing a ridiculous amount of vegetables while another servant was washing the dishes.

Mauve tore her gaze away, she knew she wasn’t helping by remaining here, instead she was distracting them.

"We should go," she said to Louis.

"After you," he replied and bowed slightly, pointing towards the door.

She nodded and walked out of the kitchen. "You know you didn’t have to follow me here," she said when he got up with her.

"And risk something happening to you. Jael won’t let me hear the end of it. He already has enough reasons to kick me out of the castle. There is no reason to add one more."

"He won’t kick you out because of me," she said.

"It’s pissing you know when you act so modest. It’s not even modesty at this point, it’s pretty much lying at this point. I am pretty sure you know how important you are to Jael."

"Well, it doesn’t mean anything as I have found it. It won’t stop him from tossing you aside as you have found out," she said glaring at him.

"Ouch! Mine is totally my fault."

"Hmm," she said as they got to the stairs. "Well then you should stop whining."

Louis immediately stopped walking and she turned to see him with a shock expression on his face.

"What?" She asked.

"I didn’t expect you to say that but you’re right I truly should stop whining. Maybe I should leave."

Mauve frowned and turned away from him, "I didn’t say that."

It wasn’t that she was trying to be rude but it was easy to say exactly what she thought to Louis because he did the same.

She took a step forward. She wanted to care about this, she truly did but the fact that she didn’t know anything and neither of them were willing to tell her about it was starting to piss her off.

"Where are you headed?" He asked, changing the subject.

"My room. Remember I am supposed to wait for Jael there."

"Yeah, I remember."

"You don’t have to go with me though. My room is literally up the stairs."

"I will see you at the door and if you don’t mind company, I can stay with you until he comes."

She turned around, stopping in the middle of the stairs and stared hard at him.

"You’re giving me the look again," he said to her.

"What look? I simply meant to say you don’t that to do that."

She turned away from him, a bit annoyed at herself for not being able to hide her thoughts.

She had wanted to be closer to Louis, she didn’t think he would be the one stretching out his arm and for some reason she couldn’t help but be suspicious.

She wanted to believe he was simply being nice and trying to keep her company but at the same time he was a vampire and she had found they weren’t very nice.

The only other vampire she could trust no questions asked was Mill and the Vampire proved herself to Mauve more times than she could count.

"Nah, your distrust was as clear as day."

She stopped at the top of the stairs. Another couple of feet and they would stop in front of the door to her room.

"I wouldn’t say that but you can understand why, don’t you?"

Louis shrugged, "I guess I am being a little too forward."

"Forward is an understatement. I can help but think there is an ulterior motive. You don’t have to do this."

"But I honestly don’t have any ulterior motive, aside from pissing Jael off."

Mauve squinted her eyes. She didn’t like how he was making so much effort without giving her a good reason why. There was no way this was because he was trying to be friendly.

"That came out wrong. I don’t want to give you any reason to not trust me so I will drop the subject. Once you’re in your room, I shall leave you be. I am sure I have bothered you enough for one day."

"Your company wasn’t completely hateful," she whispered.

Louis chuckled, "Now who is being condescending. Still, you’re right to be cautious. Not everything is as it seems."

She glared at him and turned away, "There you go speaking in parables again."

"Do I do that?" He asked.

"Whatever," she replied and pushed open the door to her room. She walked in and shut it close before he could reply.

Her room was lit enough for her to see. She didn’t waste any time walking to her bed. She threw herself on it immediately.

She felt very tired, she wondered if it had anything to do with the fact that she had spent the past two and a half hours on her feet.

She raised her head slightly and twirled her neck. It felt stiff. Other parts of her body still hurt and she figured it would take awhile before she stopped feeling pain completely.

She looked at the door, she wondered how long she would have to wait before Jael showed up. Did he have some sort of plan? She was curious.

She rolled to her side as she remembered the last conversation with Louis. She wondered if she had been a bit harsh but he had taken it in stride.

There was no reason to be so suspicious and maybe if she had some confidence in her personality she wouldn’t be so distrustful.

She wondered if Jael and Louis fixed their relationship, maybe she would feel better about spending time with him.

She liked his company as annoying as he was but it was also obvious he didn’t hate her or treat her differently than any other vampire.

"What are you thinking about?" A loud voice said.

Mauve sat up immediately to see Jael approaching her from the door. How did he enter her room without making a sound?

"Jael," she called.

He looked a bit pissed but she could also see he was stressed. "I said, what are you thinking about?" He repeated.

"Nothing she said and looked away from him." Why couldn’t she be a better liar?

"Really?" He asked as he sat on the bed. "Then explain how you didn’t hear me walk into your room. What if I was someone else?"

He forced her to look at his face and she saw that he was more concerned than angry.

"Sorry," she said, not knowing how to reply.

"What were you thinking about? Is something wrong?" His gaze darkened. "Did Louis..."

"Do you not trust him?" She asked, suddenly. She saw his eyebrows relax for a second. "If you didn’t trust him, I don’t think you would have let him stay with me."

Jael sighed, "I do trust him. Does this have anything to do with what you’re thinking about?"

She nodded.

"I see."

"I don’t understand why you two won’t make amends."

Jael gave her an unimpressive expression and touched her cheeks. "That’s not for you to be worried about."

"But..."

"I came to spend time with you and all I hear is Louis, Louis, Louis. Frankly, I am not very happy about this."

"What, are you jealous?" She asked with a loud chuckle. The chuckle died in her throat when she realized Jael wasn’t laughing.

He moved closer to her, his voice dropping to a whisper, "And what if I am?"

Mauve looked up at his bright blue eyes. She hadn’t expected this response. "T-there is no reason for you to be."

"Why not?" He asked, staring into her eyes.

Mauve tried to look away but she found that she could not. He wasn’t joking. She could see that clearly. However, she couldn’t comprehend why he was jealous.

"You didn’t mind spending time with him even though he should be a complete stranger to you. You humor his compliments and not once have you been scared of him. In fact you seem to be very at ease with him.
