Chapter 439. Potato Head
Chapter 439: 439. Potato Head
Louis squinted his eyes, "He didn’t tell you our mother’s name?"
"No, he didn’t."
She tried to hide her sadness as she replied but it wasn’t easy to. She felt left out.
"That asshole, explains why you know nothing about me. There is no way he could have spoken about any of them without my name popping up."
"I am sure he was preoccupied with other things and it’s not like I asked and he didn’t tell me. I never asked."
She truly never asked but it was hard to do so and Jael always seemed to want to keep things to himself. It was hard to tell if she could pry or not.
"Stop making excuses for him. He is an asshole, that is all there is no it."
"You sure do call him vulgar things," she said and turned from him again.
It was a little weird. She has never met anyone who spoke ill of Jael. She supposed it meant their relationship was strong but she wasn’t sure.
"Do you mind?" He asked, peering at her face. "Or is it that I should never speak in such a manner in front of a lady?"
She gave him a little squint, "I couldn’t care less about that. He is still my husband, you know and I will be the last to admit he isn’t perfect. So, I will appreciate it if you don’t call him names so much."
"Aren’t you nice and considerate?" Louis said. "Even though he has failed in all his duties."
"I am not, it’s just proper manners."
"Proper manners eh? Well then as you wish, my lady. From now onwards I won’t call Jael vulgar names in your presence. Is that enough for you?"
She nodded, "It is."
"Now about that Potato head."
"Louis," she called.
"What?" He replied with an innocent look on his face. "I said I wouldn’t call him vulgar names. I never said anything about calling him other names."
"I’ve been tricked," she smiled.
"You don’t sound annoyed."
"I am not, Potato head suits him."
"I mean, he must get on your nerves every now and then."
"Oh, he does. Especially when he does like..." she
"What’s going on here?" A loud voice echoed in the space.
Mauve jumped as she heard Jael’s voice. Of all the people to show up, it had to be him. Why did she feel like she was caught doing something she wasn’t supposed to be doing?
"Don’t sneak up on people like that, it’s rude," Louis said, glaring back at him, his head turned in Jael’s direction.
"What are you doing here?" He repeated. He looked especially annoyed to see Jael. "You should be on your way back to Xanthus castle."
Louis squinted his eyes, "I already told you. I am not leaving. You can’t chase me out. It’s as much my home as it is yours."
"Whatever, I can’t force you out truly but someone else can. I already sent a letter to Kieran. We should get a reply soon."
"You didn’t," Louis said in horror.
"Unfortunately, I did. Does he even know you’re here?"
"Don’t be cruel. Of course he does. Unlike you, he actually wants to know where I am. So of course I told him I was returning."
Mauve saw Jael’s gaze darken. She could easily tell that Louis had hit a nerve. She wondered what the problem between them was that it was so hard to fix.
Louis seemed ready to make amends but she could tell Jael wasn’t interested. She couldn’t help but wonder why?
She knew better than to do so. She could tell neither of them would answer her questions.
Jael closed the gap between them and stood a little too close to her. He touched her cheek slightly.
"Is he being a nuisance?" He asked her.
She shook her head, "He offered to guard me since Mill has errands to run."
"Yeah, I just left her."
"I see," she said. "What you guys had to discuss, was it important?" She saw Jael’s eyes widened for a bit.
"No, we mostly spoke about you." He didn’t take his hand off her face.
"Really?" She grinned. "What about me did you all talk about?"
"It’s a secret," he grinned at her, tucking the strands of her that had escaped her bun.
"If you say so," she replied with a sad pout and looked down.
"Enough love birds. Don’t you have somewhere you need to be, Jael?" Louis interrupted.
Jael ignored him. "How’s your gardening going?"
"So far so good," she replied and showed him her messy fingers.
"I had to refill the dirt a little and water the soil. Most of the plants needed trimming and the dried flowers made a mess. I wanted to leave them but I figured it would look cleaner this way."
"Good work," he praised.
Mauve blushed, "Thank you but if Mack and Mill hadn’t helped out, I would have had even more work to do. They have my thanks."
"Try not to stress yourself too much," he said and tried grabbing her by the wrist.
"Don’t, it’s dirty." She pulled her hand away from his grasp and hid it behind her back.
Jael looked a bit sad but he didn’t push it. "Don’t overwork yourself."
"I won’t," she replied, looking up at him with bright eyes. "Thank you."
"Also ask for help if you need it. My servants are at your disposal."
"No, no, no. I am good." Mauve let out immediately. There was no way she would ask any servant to help her out with her garden. She knew better than to do that.
"Don’t hold back and if you want Mill, I can send for her. You don’t have to condone his behavior."
Mauve watched Louis’ eyes widened in horror at Jael’s words. "You don’t have to be so condescending."
"No, Louis is great company," she replied.
"You see," Louis said triumphantly.
Jael’s expression darkened, "If you say so. I would have spent the rest of the evening with you but I have issues to attend to. I came to see how you’re faring here."
"Really," she smiled at him. "You didn’t have to do that."
"Of course, I do and I will be back again. How much longer will you be here?"
"Less than an hour," she replied. "I am about halfway done. It’s not so much work."
"Then I will see you in an hour. You should be in your room then. I will come to get you."
Mauve nodded. She wanted to ask if they were going somewhere but she knew he wouldn’t tell her.
He kissed her forehead before he turned away from her. She could clearly see him glare at Louis.
"Bye bye," Louis said with a snarky tone.
Jael turned to look at her one more time before he went out the door. He looked reluctant to leave and it made her feel warm inside. He had looked like he had wanted to spend time with her.
"You really do love him," Louis said, interrupting her thoughts.
"Was it that obvious?" She asked with a faint blush and looked back to the flowers.
She could have denied it but Louis has already seen through her more times than she could count. There was really no point lying now.
"It is and it does make me a little sad cause he isn’t worth it."
"Don’t say that!" She scolded,
"Yeah, you’re right. Everyone deserves love, even Potato head."
Mauve chuckled, "I really wish you two would sort your issues out. I can tell you really care about him."
"Huh? I don’t. I am only trying to make this work out because of our dead mother.
"I don’t think that’s the only..."
"Enough about this topic," he said and walked closer to the flowers. I know I don’t know a thing about flowers but I will help you out, just show me what I need to do."
"Oh, no. There is no need for you to do that. I can totally handle this myself."
"I insist," he said, staring at her intensely.
Mauve nodded. She didn’t want to give in so easily but she could tell this was a fight she wouldn’t win and just like Jael, Louis tended to have his way.
"You can take a little of the sand and pour it into this," she pointed to the next section. "But make sure it isn’t too much. I don’t want to the growing flowers to overflow with sand."
"You sound like quite the expert," he said.
Mauve gave a laugh, "No I am not. It is all trial and error and the plants are wonderful, they grow beside my silly efforts."
"Don’t cal them silly. Anyone can see how much you love the flowers. I am sure they see it too."
"You give too many compliments," she said and turned away from him.
"I thought you said I was condescending."
"Did I?" She asked with a fake look of confusion on her face. I don’t recall."
