Chapter 438: 438. His Mother’s Name
"If I didn’t know better, I’d say she was avoiding me. Do you think she is?"
Louis turned his gaze from the door to Mauve, one of his brows was slightly.
"Why are you asking me?" Mauve asked with a frown.
She was still a little stunned by the situation. She obviously couldn’t refuse but she wondered if Jael would be pissed again.
There was also the fact that Louis would either be a great company or a terrible one. She was hoping it wouldn’t be the latter. She didn’t have the energy to deal with an attitude.
"You two seem close. I figured you’d know."
"I don’t think so, besides, Mill isn’t that sort of person. Did you do something to her?"
Louis frowned, "You’re making this my fault."
"I didn’t say that but surely if you think she’s avoiding you then there must be reasons why and it will have to be something you did."
"Why can’t it be something she did?"
"Because Mill wouldn’t do anything wrong."
"You have such great faith in her, don’t you? As you said we are close."
Mauve nodded immediately, "Of course, I do."
"You don’t trust me?" He asked and took a step closer but not enough to infringe on her personal space.
"I wouldn’t say that. It’s more like I don’t know you well enough to trust you and for some reason, Jael seems extremely wary of you. I suppose that’s a good enough reason not to trust you."
"That Twat! He is even ruining your mind towards me. I swear on my life you have nothing to fear."
"I am not scared of you. I just don’t trust you."
"What don’t you trust about me?" He asked.
She shrugged, "I don’t have any reason to trust you. Just that."
He frowned, obviously not impressed by her response. "Well then I guess I have to win your trust then. I accept the challenge."
"You don’t have to do that. I don’t think my trust is that important," she replied, tending to the flowers.
"Of course it is, you’re someone who is very important to Jael and therefore important to me too."
"Were you guys really that close?" She asked, turning her frame to face him again.
"Yep."
"What happened? I know you left but I don’t know why."
"You want to tell you?"
She nodded, "I suppose I could use the information. It will certainly improve your chances of winning my trust."
Louis threw his head back and laughed, "You are fun. I like you."
Mauve squinted her eyes. She didn’t like the way he said it. Almost as if he didn’t expect her to be. Before she could give him a look of approval he started to speak again.
"I wonder if you’re this smart with Jael. I can definitely see why he likes you so much."
Mauve blushed, and she turned away from him. "Your chance just went down fifty percent."
"Oh, no. What did I say?"
She scoffed and got to work on the flowers.
"What are you doing?" He asked.
"Tending to flowers, obviously."
"Hmm, nice garden. Never really cared for flowers. I saw Bleeding Hearts during my journey, they were the first flowers that ever drew my attention.
"Bleeding Hearts?" She asked with a frown.
"I have never heard of them before now."
"They don’t grow around these parts," he said.
"Okay," she said, turning her gaze away from him. "Are they that pretty?"
"Oh, they are. Bright red heart-shaped flowers. I have never seen anything like them before."
"Shaped like a heart?" She asked, turning to look at him with wide eyes. "Surely you jest."
"I would never," he smiled.
"Well, if you won’t tell me why you left, would you tell me about your journey? My interest is piqued and I want to hear about more strange things you found, it doesn’t have to be about flowers."
Mauve blinked as she realized the words she had just spoken.
Mauve blinked as she realized the words she had just spoken. What was she doing? Did she just ask a stranger to tell her about his travels?
Technically he wasn’t a stranger but at the same time, he was but that wasn’t her only concern. Jael wouldn’t be pleased about this. He would be pissed.
"Really?" He said with bright eyes. "You want to hear about them?"
"Of course," she said, mirroring his excitement. Her inhibitions were forgotten.
"Well, I shall tell you everything. At least you’re interested, unlike a certain person but not today. You need to be at least seated to hear my story, it is certainly not something you can handle on your feet."
"I can’t tell if you’re being caring or condescending."
He smirked at her, "It might be a little bit of both."
She scoffed and turned away, "You two are actually alike."
"Huh? Never compare me to that lazy pompous brat. You know when he was younger he was a whole lot snottier and it didn’t help that he was bigger than I was."
"He was?" Mauve asked.
"Yep, you wouldn’t believe it. He was tall for a kid. He would always use his height to bully me and beat me up."
Mauve squinted her eyes, she could figure out how height was to his advantage. Didn’t that mean there was more of him to hit? She didn’t disbelieve Louis and she found that she was interested in this. Jael never spoke about his childhood.
"You look like you don’t trust my words."
She blinked, "Far from it. It’s more like, you couldn’t fight very well as a kid."
"He was bigger than I was."
"Who started the fights?" Mauve asked.
Louis looked away immediately, "I may have but I wasn’t going to let him bully me because he was the prince. So I got my rear handed to me."
Mauve glanced away from him as she laughed. She could almost imagine the scene.
"I am sure it wasn’t that bad. You were kids."
"Oh, it was terrible. Victoria nearly lost her mind on our case."
"Victoria?" She asked with a frown. "Who is that?"
Louis squinted his eyes, "He didn’t tell you our mother’s name?"
Mauve shook her head, that’s Jael’s mother’s name. The name of the owner of the necklace she had on last night. It was a pretty name.
"No, he didn’t."
