Chapter 419. Not Invincible
Chapter 419: 419. Not Invincible
"If Louis didn’t tell me now, would you have mentioned it ever?" She asked, staring hard at him.
Jael looked away from her for a second. "I would have," he said as their eyes met again. "I did promise not to keep things from you. I just didn’t want to give you another thing to worry about."
Her eyes softened a little, "I am not complaining," she said and pulled her hands from him. "I want to worry about such things."
"I hear you," he said and kissed the top of her forehead.
"And eat," she said as she leaned into the kiss.
"You don’t have to tell me twice," he replied.
Mauve placed her head on his chest, unwilling to move for a bit. It could have gone completely differently. He could have died and she wouldn’t have known.
Now that she wasn’t angry that he had kept it from her, she was hit with this. She had never really been concerned for Jael’s life as he was a vampire but he wasn’t invincible.
He had lost his parents to Palers and the same could happen to him. She pressed her face against his chest as she tried to process her thoughts.
She had never seen him injured before but it didn’t mean it couldn’t happen, and now that they had a full-blown war with Palers, anything was possible.
It wasn’t something she wanted to think about but it was something that could happen. Jael could get severely injured.
She pressed her body closer to his and he rubbed her hair. She could feel the water in her eyes. She didn’t know what she’d do if anything happened to him.
"That bastard," he swore. "Don’t concern yourself with things like that, okay?"
"Don’t tell me that, I don’t want anything to happen to you," she said. Her voice was muffled because her face was against his chest.
"I know and I promise to be careful," he replied.
She looked up at him, "Promise?" She asked.
He nodded, "I promise."
"And you’ll eat properly now?" She asked.
"Of course," he smiled. "I don’t have any reason not to. I am sure food will taste heavenly now." He pinched her cheek.
"Ow," she said and grabbed the spot.
"You should eat," he said.
"Back at you," she replied and turned away from him to face the bag of food.
She brought it closer and untied it to reveal its contents. She brought it out and soon enough started to eat.
Jael watched her intently, his gaze never wavering. She squinted her eyes at him and handed him some berries.
"Eat," she said. "Don’t stare."
"As you wish," he replied but instead of taking it out of her hands, he bent his head and bit it out of her hand. Mauve blushed and turned away.
*********************
Mauve stepped out of the cave and stretched out her arms. She couldn’t believe she had just spent the last half a day in a cave with Jael.
It was late evening at this point. There was no sign of the sun and she knew in seconds it would turn very dark.
At least the night sky was pretty. She couldn’t say the same thing about the Nolands. The terrain wasn’t a sight for sore eyes.
"Hello Mauve," Danag drew her attention to him. He was standing beside the carriage.
"Danag," she grinned at him. "Good evening. I hope you rested well."
"Yes, I hope you did too," he replied as he started to climb into the coach’s position.
Mauve frowned as she felt something against her back. She was still standing in front of the cave. She knew it was Jael standing a little too close.
There was enough space for him to go around her but he was choosing to stand directly behind her.
She looked up with her arms still stretched out. "Jael," she said with a bright smile as he looked down at her.
"Hi," he said. "You should get into the carriage."
She nodded, Danag was already on the coach seat and that was when she realized there was no sign of Louis or Erick.
She figured they probably went ahead as usual. She wondered how many vampires were in the shadows accompanying them on the journey. Somehow she could tell it wasn’t just Louis and Erick.
"Sire," Danag said with hands on the horses’ reins.
"Danag," Jael called back.
"I am ready to leave whenever," the guard replied.
"Do you think we would get to the Vampire Regions before sunrise?" He asked.
Danag frowned slightly, "No, even if I push the horses we will still need another two hours after the sun rises to get out of the Nolands and two more hours to get to the castle. I don’t want them to tire out before we get out of Nolands, just in case I need them to suddenly increase the pace."
"I see. We better start moving then," Jael said and walked to the carriage door.
"Yes, Sire," Danag said, ending with a soft nod.
"Come on," he said to Mauve who had moved from the same spot.
Mauve nodded and took a step forward. Jael opened the carriage and carefully helped her into it.
He got in immediately after her and she half expected him to pull her into his lap but he didn’t do that. As soon as Danag heard the door closed, he whistled loudly and the horses started to move.
She rested her head on his arm, feeling the vibrations of the carriage as it moved over the rough earth.
She looked up briefly to see him looking down at her. She blushed and looked away.
"Would you like me to carry you to my castle?" He asked suddenly.
Mauve jerked her head up, "What?" She asked. She knew they were far away from the castle.
"It will be faster and you won’t have to spend another night in some nasty cave," Jael explained. He looked at her eagerly as he spoke.
"What about your arm?" She asked and Jael narrowed his eyes.
