Chapter 418: 418. She Finds Out
Louis smirked, "I just popped in to say my greetings. The sun has set about halfway."
"You are not allowed to do that, Louis. Spit out whatever this is about," Jael said, unimpressed by Louis’ presence.
"That’s really why I am here. Fine," he said when the look on Jael’s face darkened. "The sun has pretty much set at this point but just to be safe and to make sure you don’t get sunburned by any chance, we are waiting an hour more."
"Is that it?" He asked.
"Pretty much," Louis nodded.
"Then leave," Jael ordered.
"Not yet. Would you like something to eat, Mauve? I figured you must be starving by now since you’d usually eat during the day and it’s already evening."
"Yes," Mauve replied before she could help herself. Only to see Jael’s expression change. Was he angry she admitted to being hungry?
She frowned, she couldn’t understand what she did wrong here. She was quite hungry and if she hadn’t eaten before falling asleep she knew her insides would have felt like someone let fire ants into her system.
"Alright then, I will bring you something to eat right away. I will be right back."
"I could just step out with you," she said and started to rise.
"No," Jael said and pulled her down. "Stay. He is more than happy to bring your meal to you." Joel stared at Louis like he was daring him to counter what he just said.
"Okay," she replied and watched Louis leave the cave without another word.
She looked up at him, "Are you angry at me?" She frowned.
"I am not angry at you," he said and tucked her hair behind her ears.
Mauve squinted her eyes, he didn’t have to do it so aggressively. Not angry, he was literally fuming.
"I am not angry," he repeated at her expression. His fingers lightly rested on her face as he traced her features. "I am just slightly ticked off that I didn’t think you might be hungry and you didn’t tell me either."
Mauve grinned, "I am not starving. I probably wouldn’t have realized I was hungry if Louis hadn’t mentioned it."
"Hmm," Jael replied. "Try to ignore him, he tends to seek out attention and he would definitely seek out yours."
"I don’t mind," she replied.
She wanted to get along with Louis. Aside from the fact that he was important to Jael, she noticed he didn’t treat her any differently than he did Danag or Jael.
He was as condescending and as nice to her as he was to everyone else. She could already tell she was starting to like him.
"I do mind," Jael said without missing a beat.
"Why?" She frowned.
"I just do, okay?"
She arched her head to the side but didn’t argue. There was obviously something he didn’t want to tell her but he was concerned about it.
"Of course," she nodded. "Besides, I doubt he would seek any attention from me. We don’t have anything in common and he can be a bit overwhelming."
It was either that or she would have to call him rude. She doubted it was proper to tell Jael his brother was rude.
"He would probably do it to piss me off."
"You flatter yourself," Louis said from the cave entrance. He was holding a bag that Mauve assumed held what she would eat.
"Hello Mauve," he said to her as he got closer. "We have some dried fruits, berries, and salted meat." He placed the bag on the ground. "Eat your fill."
"Thank you," she smiled at him and leaned forward to pick up the bag.
It was a bit hard to do some with Jael’s arm around her stomach but she knew if she mentioned it he wouldn’t be very pleased.
"Your meal is also here, Sire. Please make sure to eat. We wouldn’t want any more incidents..."
"Shut up!" Jael scolded.
Mauve leaned back looking from Jael to Louis. "What incident?"
"It’s nothing, he is just trying to make a mountain out of a molehill," Jael tried to cover up.
"Yeah, like a severed arm is a molehill."
"Louis," Jael growled.
"A severed arm!" Mauve screamed in horror.
She looked at Jael’s face and her eyes immediately strayed to his arms. They looked fine and if Louis hadn’t mentioned it, she probably would have never found out.
"It’s all healed now," Jael said.
"Yeah, now! It took way longer than it should because a certain person wouldn’t eat or feed. It was a disaster," Louis expatiated, he looked like he was having fun.
"Get out," Jael said, grounding his teeth.
"As you wish," Louis smirked before bowing his head. "Enjoy your meal. Bye, Mauve."
She waved at him and could see Jael’s scowl from the corner of her eyes as he slipped out of the cave.
Mauve turned to Jael, "Why didn’t you tell me you were attacked by a paler?"
That was the only thing she could think of that could attack him and inflict that much damage.
"Because I wasn’t attacked, I did the attacking." He sighed. "It’s not as serious as Louis is trying to make it. I am fine now."
Mauve gave him a sad gaze. "What arm?" She asked.
"This one," he whispered pointing to his left arm but he didn’t look away from her face.
She stared keenly at the arm, it was covered with the sleeve of his shirt and there was truly no way to tell it had been severed. She winced as she thought about the word.
She touched it, applying a bit of pressure but he didn’t even flinch. She couldn’t imagine how painful it must have been.
"See, it doesn’t hurt anymore."
She ran her fingers over the sleeve, looking for any bumps or cracks but there was nothing that gave any cause for alarm. All she could feel was hard muscles.
She wanted to take it off and see for herself but she knew that was pushing it and this was not the right place to check. Once they got to the castle she would check for herself.
Somehow she could tell Louis wasn’t exaggerating and it was just as bad as he made it seem. She looked up at Jael’s face, her hands still on his arm.
"If he didn’t tell me now, would you have mentioned it ever?" She asked, staring hard at him.
