Chapter 420. A Demonstration
Chapter 420: 420. A Demonstration
"What about your arm?" She asked.
That wasn’t the only thing that was wrong with his offer but it was a major concern. He might say it’s better now but the fact that something happened to it meant it wasn’t the same any longer.
He narrowed his eyes, "Thank you for your concern but I already told you it hurts no more."
"Are you sure? I don’t want you to strain yourself on my behalf," she whispered.
She could tell that he didn’t like the fact that she thought he wasn’t capable of getting her to the castle but she would rather bring this up and piss him off than an accident occurring while they were heading home.
"I assure you this is more for my benefit than it is for you. I don’t think I will last if we have to stay in another cave."
Mauve looked at Jael as realization dawned on her. He probably didn’t get any sleep the night because unlike she who had used him as a bed, he had slept on the hard floor.
She definitely had a more comfortable sleep than anyone who slept in a cave would. Her body didn’t ache more than it already did and she didn’t feel the slightest bit tired.
She must have slept for at least nine hours straight. That’s a lot, a little too much if she had to judge. She doubted Jael had been able to sleep for half the time that she had.
"I apologize," she whispered. "I am sure you did not get much sleep during the day."
He gave her an unimpressed look. "Don’t apologize like it’s your fault," he responded. "Besides, if it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t have gotten any sleep at all."
She peered at him, "Have you been having trouble sleeping?" She asked.
He shrugged, "It happens. Nothing too concerning."
Mauve frowned. Whenever Jael said that it was something to be worried about. "How long?" She asked.
"Hmm?" He asked, looking at her.
"How long have you been having trouble sleeping?" She asked.
He blinked and she watched him scan her face. "Since you left," he said.
"Jael," she called, thinking he was teasing her.
"You took my sleep when you left," he said with a straight face.
Her expression changed from exasperation to shock. "You don’t mean that."
He grabbed her palm, interlocking her fingers with his. "I do mean it. That’s why I said you could never interrupt my sleep. I sleep perfectly when you lie next to me."
Mauve blushed and looked away from him. "That’s not possible, my presence can’t make you sleep better."
"Hmm, that’s disappointing. I guess I don’t have that effect on you."
"I didn’t say that," she hurriedly said.
She’s never really had issues sleeping except something was terribly wrong and she might not be able to sleep for a while.
Her body would shut down from accumulated tiredness and her sleep schedule would be back to normal.
However, she would be lying if she said she didn’t prefer to sleep next to Jael but she still couldn’t see how she made that significant difference.
"Don’t overthink it," he said lifting her head. "Just tell me if you’d let me carry you the rest of the way back. You didn’t respond and don’t worry about my arm. You don’t weigh that much for you to be concerned. I can carry you with one finger if I find a way to spread out your weight for me to lift you."
"Now you’re just spewing lies," she said removing her chin from his grip. "There’s no way you can carry me with a finger."
"Would you like me to demonstrate?" He beamed, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
"No," she said without hesitating. The excitement she could see in his eyes was concerning. "I have never doubted your strength."
"Are you sure?" He asked with a smirk. "You seem to have forgotten."
Mauve didn’t see it coming and even if she had, she would have been able to stop it. He bent and slipped his hand under her legs.
Without giving her time to process what was happening, he lifted her. He used his other hand to support her back as he easily dropped her onto his legs.
He did it as easily as one would move a pillow. Mauve knew she was tiny but she wasn’t really that tiny. He shouldn’t be able to lift her that easily.
"Did that refresh your memory?" He asked with an expression that was a little too happy in her opinion.
Mauve wasn’t impressed, she hated the fact that she couldn’t disprove his point. Maybe if she weighed a little more, he would have issues tossing her around.
"Don’t look so pissed," he said.
"I am not pissed, I just don’t like being tossed around very much."
"Oh, my bad. I will try to do it less."
"Jael, that’s not what you’re supposed to say," she replied.
"I know," he said, closing the gap between their faces. "But I like having you in my arms. I would absolutely hate it if I couldn’t do that again."
"Uh hmm," Mauve nodded. She couldn’t remember what they were talking about again. All she could think about was how close their faces were.
"I am glad you understand," he smirked. "Does that mean you’re fine with the arrangement?"
"Yes," she responded. "It would be best to get home as soon as we can."
Sentiments aside there was no reason why she should refuse this. The faster she could get to the castle, the better. Palers trumps whatever reservations she might have.
It wasn’t just her there was to worry about but also Jael. He could be in danger too. She touched the side of his face.
"When?" She asked.
He blinked and immediately pulled away. Mauve smirked. Just because he could take advantage of the fact that she liked his hands on her, didn’t mean she couldn’t do the same.
She leaned forward, "I asked a question. Shouldn’t you start the journey now so we can get to the castle early enough?"
