Chapter 415. Lay Next To Me

Chapter 415: 415. Lay Next To Me

Mauve closed her eyes as she tried to get some sleep. The meal she had gotten had been fresh and nothing dried.

She figured they were packed just as she left the tavern inn. She wondered who was in charge of that. She could see Galath doing it.

She hoped the guards that had brought her all the way to the last village were fine. They were probably already on their way back to the castle. She doubted they would be in trouble, the person who would be would be Malcolm.

She felt Jael press his nose against the back of her head and take a deep breath. His gesture wiped her worried thoughts away.

He pulled her closer to himself and carefully placed an arm underneath her. "I know I’m not the softest thing to lay on but I’d like to think I do better than this hard floor."

His voice sounded muffled as he spoke into her hair. He didn’t give her a chance to respond as he used his free hand to adjust her until most of her body was on him.

She had her head on his chest and most of the top part of her body was on him. One of her legs bent at a comfortable angle rested on his legs. Only a small part of her body lay on the floor and that was mostly her left leg.

He was right though, this was certainly more comfortable than lying on the ground. The problem was all she could feel was him. How was she going to get any sleep in this situation?

She couldn’t help but think she would have a better chance of falling asleep on the hard floor than she would in this position.

"Are you comfortable?" He asked.

Mauve nodded, comfort wasn’t the issue here. She was more concerned that she could feel him underneath her.

He placed his arm around her as if to lock her in place, pressing her down against his body. His other hand moved to her hair and slowly started to play with the strands.

"Let me know if there is anything you don’t like," he said as he kept on stroking her hair.

She nodded into his chest, her cheeks a pale pink color. She was glad her face was hidden from his view because she knew it would give more than she wanted away.

He kissed the top of her head and said "Get some sleep, I know just how tired you are."

"I am not that tired," she whispered.

This was a lie. She wasn’t just tired, she was painfully exhausted. Her entire body hurt and that weakened her more than she was willing to admit.

"If you say so, just try to get some sleep."

Mauve didn’t argue, she knew it would be easier for her to fall asleep now than later in the day. Once it’s two in the afternoon, she would probably not be able to sleep again.

Her sleep schedule has completely changed and it wouldn’t be so easy to switch so it was best to get as much sleep as she could while she could.

The only reason she was even remotely sleepy was because she was awake for more than half the night.

She closed her eyes and tried to clear her thoughts so it would be easier to fall asleep. They still had a long way to go.

More than anything, she wanted to keep up with the trip. Jael would definitely take advantage of any situation where she couldn’t keep up even a little.

It wasn’t that she hated it but she would rather do things herself sometimes. Having him carry her around like that was ruining her reputation.

She knew there was no reputation to ruin but she feared nothing’s changed and things would remain the same way if he was still treating her like he usually would.

His hand moved from her back to the small of her waist. Mauve’s eyes flew open immediately but nothing happened. He just kept his hand there.

Mauve slowly closed her eyes, she couldn’t understand why she felt a little disappointed. She must be a little delirious because of the lack of sleep.

She relaxed her muscles completely, putting all her weight on him. His hand on her hair didn’t stop moving and Mauve let her a soft groan as she slowly drifted to sleep.

Mauve’s eyes slowly opened, she was still in the same position with Jael’s arm wrapped around her but with the way she felt she most definitely had been asleep for a while.

"You’re awake," his voice echoed in her ears.

She jerked her head up and made eye contact with him. She pulled away from him, sitting upright, and nodded her head.

She pulled her to her chest as she stared down at him. One hand of Jael’s arm was behind her waist while the other was under his head.

He had a puzzled expression on his face but she was acting oddly. She had forgotten for a second about the sleeping arrangements.

"Are you okay?" He asked, still looking at her with a puzzled expression.

"Yeah, I guess I slept for quite a while."

She looked around as she spoke. From the tiny light seeping through the entrance, it was at least evening.

"Yes," he said. "We should leave in another two hours."

Mauve tore her gaze from his face. How can he stare at her so intensely?

"Wow. I must have been tired." It was a bit shocking that she didn’t wake up even for a little bit throughout. She wasn’t even comfortable.

"Did you get any sleep?" She asked him.

He must have been uncomfortable sleeping with her on his chest the entire time.

He smiled at her, an actual smile. "Yeah, better than I have in weeks."

"That’s good, I was worried you wouldn’t be able to get any sleep because of me," she said.

"You should never worry about that," he said and sat upright. "I sleep perfectly when you lay next to me."
