Chapter 404. Don’t Cry
Chapter 404: 404. Don’t Cry
"Jael," she whispered.
"Hello Mauve," as he spoke he raised his hand and tucked her hair behind her ears. "They said you wouldn’t wake up, no matter what they did."
Her eyes bulged some more as though the fact that he responded meant this wasn’t a dream.
"What are you doing here?" She asked, her shocked expression didn’t change.
He pulled his hand away from her face as if she burnt him. "That’s not the response I was expecting," he said with a frown.
The familiar brows dip was soothing, Mauve fought the urge to try to straighten the folds.
"Well, Louis said you couldn’t come because you had important business to attend to."
She looked down as she spoke. Why was he sitting so close to her? If she leaned forward even a little, her head would fall onto his chest.
"You don’t seem happy to see me," he said.
Mauve jerked her head upward to look at his face again. The sound of his voice tugged at her chest.
"I wouldn’t say that," she replied and turned her head away but not before noting that his hair was in a short ponytail.
Did he really not cut his hair because she had asked him not to? She couldn’t see the possibility of that even though it was the only explanation.
"But you wouldn’t say you’re happy to see me either."
"I am a bit caught off guard," she said and peeked at him again before keeping her gaze down. "I didn’t think I would see you until I got to the castle."
"Same here but you were taking too long to get back," he said with a loud sigh and Mauve saw him try to run his fingers through his hair but managed to stop himself halfway.
Mauve held back a chuckle, she wondered how many times he had tried to do that with his hair tied up.
"A lot of things were happening," she whispered.
"I suppose," he said and let out a dry laugh. "I don’t know what I thought our reunion would be like but it sure as hell didn’t go like this in my head."
She glanced at him again, "Hmm," she replied.
"I supposed you’re vexed at me," he said.
Mauve shrugged, "Vex is a mild word. Use something stronger."
"I do deserve your anger and I apologize for what I did."
"Hmm," she responded.
Mauve was screaming in her head, she was sure her heart was beating loud enough that it could be heard outside of this room.
What was he doing here? She thought she would have at least two days to prepare herself before she had to see him. Now that he was right in front of she didn’t know what to do.
She was acting aloof because her emotions were all over the place. It was either that or she would jump into his hands and she didn’t need anyone to tell her that was a bad idea. She knew that herself.
She glanced at him again, he looked a bit pale. Did he lose weight? Do vampires lose weight? He had dark circles under his eyes. It was obvious he wasn’t getting enough sleep.
She didn’t like how excited she was getting. She should be angry. Her anger should supersede everything else.
Unfortunately, the only thing she could feel was how happy she was to see him and why did it felt a bit good that he looked stressed.
"You look alright, I suppose your father didn’t slack off in his duties," he said, his gaze intense.
Mauve forced her head up. Jael was aware of her being the King’s illegitimate daughter but she doubted he was aware that Jean informed her.
"Yeah," she spat out. "He hated to see me leave."
Technically, this was correct but it wasn’t for the reasons she was making it seem but Jael didn’t need to know that.
"Ah, I see. I shouldn’t have made you leave like that."
"You didn’t even try to see me before I left," she whispered.
Mauve bit the inside of her cheeks. Why did she feel the urge to cry? It was weeks ago, you would think she was over it.
"I know what I did was wrong but at the time I couldn’t help but think you’d rather go to your father than stay with me." A painful look passed across his face.
He looked like he wanted to touch her but he pulled his hand away immediately. He balled them into a fist and kept them close beside himself.
"You didn’t exactly give me much of a choice. It was either left or right and none of them were good options."
Jael winced, "I know and I am sorry. I-I miss you. A lot," he breathed loudly. "A whole lot and all I just want to do right now is pull you into my arms but I doubt you would like that very much."
Mauve looked up at him with water-filled eyes, he didn’t have to say that. She was trying her very best to be mad.
She hated that this was the exact same thing she wanted to do. She wanted him to hold her as easily as he used to.
She wanted to forget they had issues that probably couldn’t be solved by only conversations. She wanted him to tell her in his bass voice that everything was alright and he wouldn’t let go of her.
His cold hands touched her face, wiping off the tears and that was when Mauve realized she was crying.
"I made you cry again, didn’t I? I never learn but I promise this will be the last time. You have my word."
He peered at her, his blue eyes moving closer to her face as his hands wiped her face clean. She sniffled.
"Don’t cry," he whispered. "You will make it so much harder for me to forgive myself for what I did to you. So don’t cry anymore."
