The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 403. Blue Gaze
Chapter 403: 403. Blue Gaze
The tavern was mostly empty, except for a table that held about three gentlemen. Mauve wasn’t sure and she wasn’t about to look in that direction.
Taverns like this give her jitters and there was nothing more nerve-racking than hostile-looking fellas sitting in the corner as if looking for trouble.
She unwittingly moved closer to Galath even though there was no reason to be concerned. She couldn’t help it.
"Right this way," the older woman said. Her back was slightly bent and she rested a hand on the small of her back.
She led them towards the corner that had stairs sticking out of it. The stairs looked sturdy and were a bit curved. Mauve realized she could see the open door at the top of the stairs but she couldn’t see what the door held.
The old lady walked faster than Mauve thought she could, leading her and Galath up the stairs. Mauve had to pick up the pace to keep up with the old lady.
They got to the top of the stairs in no time, walking through the open door. At the top of the stairs was a pathway with rooms on both sides.
The old lady didn’t slow her steps; instead, she walked to the end of the hall before coming to a stop in front of a door.
"This is your room," Galath said as he pushed open the door.
The room was compact, it looked comfortable enough. At the corner was a table that could only hold one chair.
The window was open and Mauve could see the sun shining down but it didn’t have as much vigor as when she was riding underneath it.
That was expected, after all, it would set in a few hours. She was hoping to get enough rest before then.
Mauve didn’t hesitate; she walked inside and headed straight for the bed. Mauve threw herself on it face first. It was a pretty small bed and if she was even an inch taller, her legs would stick out the edge.
"Princess," Galath called from the door, she could hear him walking inside.
"Mhmm," she reluctantly answered.
Right now she just wanted to be left alone for at least a full hour. She was so tired, the only thing she had managed to take off were her shoes.
Mauve could already tell she would fall asleep immediately. Her eyes felt heavy but compared to the rest of her body, they didn’t come close.
She laid on her front as it would be suicidal to lay on her back. Using her arms as a pillow to support her head she closed her eyes.
"Would you like something to eat?" He asked.
"No," she replied immediately. "I need a few minutes to myself. As soon as I feel a lot less tired, I will let you know."
"As you wish," he said. She heard his retreating footsteps and opened her eyes to see him close the door.
At the sound of the door closing, Mauve wondered if she had made the wrong choice and just maybe she should have accepted Galath’s offer of food.
The journey had been shorter than she had expected but that was most likely because she pushed herself more than she should have and now she was paying for it.
Her fingers hurt from holding the reins and similarly, her shoulders were killing her. Her rear on the other hand was a completely different subject, at this point, she was tempted to ask for some ointment to relieve the soreness.
However, the good news was two-thirds of the journey was done. Going back and forth between Vampire Regions and Greenham in such a short time was not only mentally draining but physically exhausting.
She said a silent prayer that everything went smoothly because if she had to do this again in the next few days, she would feed herself to the Palers.
Mauve winced, the headache was making it hard for her to fall asleep but she knew it wouldn’t be for long. Her body was too tired to fight the incoming sleep.
There was also the fact that now that the riding had ended, she was less anxious and her body was less tense.
Mauve was barely done with this train of thought when she slowly started to doze. Her eyes started to get heavy and her mind drifted out of her control.
She had no idea what she dreamt of or for how long she was asleep. It was a peaceful sleep and she pretty much slept like a baby.
Mauve winced as she felt something cold on her forehead. It felt like someone had placed a rag dipped in cold water on her forehead.
She turned her head in the opposite direction, groaning softly. She wasn’t ready to wake up yet. It felt like she had only been asleep for a few minutes.
"Mauve," she heard a familiar whisper.
"Mhm," she replied.
"Mauve," the voice called again, this time fiddling with her hair.
Mauve’s eyes flew open immediately, every ounce of sleep gone. There was no way her ears would deceive her. She knew this voice.
She sat upright immediately coming face to face with him. She recognized him immediately. Her room was dark and there was barely any light except for the candlelight on the table.
It wasn’t nearly enough to illuminate the room but Mauve knew she didn’t need that much light to recognize him.
His eyes were the first thing she saw. Their blue gaze was nothing she could ever mistake. He gazed at her intently as if he wanted to see the recess of her soul.
She hated the way his eyes called to her, hated the way the first thought she had was to fling herself at him.
"Jael," his name left her lips, almost like a prayer. She still couldn’t believe her eyes but she was sure it was him. She wouldn’t mistake him for anyone else.
"Hello Mauve," as he spoke he raised his hand and tucked her hair behind her ears.
