Chapter 399: 399. Best Action To Take

"If you had done your duty as my daughter. I would never have had to say that to you."

"What do you want?" She asked.

She didn’t care for whatever reasons he had for what he said to her, she just wanted to know why he was here. It couldn’t be good.

He squinted his eyes at her. Mauve frowned, she didn’t like the fact that he was towering over her but she didn’t want to move from her comfortable position on the bed.

"That’s no way to speak to your Father," he said, his tone a bit lowered.

"What do you honestly want? You made me marry a vampire and now you say it’s a bad idea. How is it a bad idea all of a sudden?"

"Vampires can’t be trusted," he said vehemently.

Mauve frowned, "They attack the kingdom, kidnap as many of us as possible. I think that’s enough indication that they couldn’t be trusted but you were willing to marry me off to them and now you don’t want me to go back."

"They attacked the castle, your father. A good daughter would want nothing to do with them. Not to mention that you returned in that state, scarred for life."

Mauve winced as he referred to her scars like it was something disgusting. Something she should be ashamed of. He hadn’t mentioned it since the first time they spoke after she got back, he had no right to bring it up in the conversation.

"They are vampires," he continued. "It shouldn’t be that hard to keep you safe. Instead, you return in this state and you willingly want to go back. Have you lost your mind?"

"I keep telling you it’s not the fault of the vampires. I wouldn’t have survived without them," Mauve argued but even as she spoke she knew it wouldn’t make any difference.

He was adamant about his stance and she was sure nothing she could say or do was going to change that. There was no point trying to change his mind.

However, she was curious as to why he was here. Did he think she would be complacent after being locked up for a few hours?

"It doesn’t matter, if they were cautious in the first place it wouldn’t have happened."

Mauve chose silence this time. Asking him what he wanted wasn’t getting her answers. Silence was the next option if that didn’t help, she hoped it would at least chase him out of her room.

Whatever respect she used to have for him was gone. Even the approval she was looking for was pretty nonexistent at this point, she realized as she stared up at him. For the first time, she didn’t want to seek his approval.

"However, your defiance is not what I am here to discuss. As I said earlier, Malcolm is adamant on your case and he is quite convinced there is no reason to keep you in your room even though your actions stated otherwise."

Mauve watched him unblinkingly. She truly did not care for what he had to say but if it concerned the removal of the restriction on her movement, she was willing to listen.

"I have decided to ease up on your punishment. After all, the crown prince is pleading on your behalf, it wouldn’t only be rude but it would be an infringement on his authority as the next king."

Mauve didn’t even try to pretend that she understood half of what she was saying. She was sure her blank stare was apparent.

"You should be grateful," he muttered and didn’t add anything.

Mauve realized this was probably where she was supposed to speak. "I am," she replied but her expression indicated otherwise.

"I have decided to hear your pleas on his behalf."

Mauve’s eyes narrowed, she couldn’t remember begging but whatever floats his boat.

"And I would let you out of your room but keep your movements to the castle grounds if you agree to not speak on this matter anymore."

Mauve started up at the man she once called father. He looked pretty self-confident. He still wouldn’t tell her the reason why he wanted her to remain here and she wasn’t about to probe him because she already knew.

She wondered what he would tell her should the vampires give him to his demand. Would he go on a rant about how trustworthy they were and ask her to return to the Vampire Regions or would he still take this stance?

Mauve shook her head, that was not for her to worry about. Her decision had already been made and from what she gathered, he wouldn’t be able to stop her.

"Yes, your Highness. As you wish. I won’t bring up the topic anymore," she said, her gaze from his face didn’t waver.

He gave her a distrustful look and Mauve half expected to say something about her response but he didn’t.

"Good, I am glad you see that obeying your father is the best action to take. I will inform the guards and you can leave the room as soon as I step out of here."

Mauve nodded her head and watched him walk out of the room. He couldn’t be more oblivious to her feelings or more like he didn’t care and she doubted he ever will.

At least the restriction was off. That was really all that mattered. The rest was planning how she would leave the castle in less than a day.

She was starting to regret her choice. However, she could tell this would be faster. Also having some control of how her journey would go felt nice.

After a few minutes passed, Mauve stood up from her bed. She might as well test out if her father truly kept to his word. Not only that, she needed to see Malcolm.

Since it was still morning, he was likely in the field with the rest of the knights. That was where she was headed, he wondered what he would say about her plan. She doubted he would object.
