The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 398. Go Against

Chapter 398: 398. Go Against

Mauve sat upright with a jolt, just as Maria let out a gasp. She turned to see the maid in the corner setting up the bath.

"I am so sorry Princess. I was trying to be quiet, I didn’t want to wake you."

"Oh," Mauve said and rubbed her eyes. She didn’t know why she had woken up suddenly but she was sure she had heard a loud sound.

"The bowl dropped a little too hard on the ground. I am so sorry."

"It’s fine," she said and pulled her hand away from her face. With the way she felt it was obvious she had not gotten enough sleep.

She yawned, she was a bit hungry. It would soon be time for breakfast. She wondered if she would be eating in her room again.

Malcolm didn’t say something about speaking to the king but she doubted it would be before breakfast. Not that she wanted to go out.

"Ugh," she muttered out loud as she remembered last night. Her head was still banging from the ordeal.

"What was that, Princess?" Maria asked. She sounded very concerned.

"Nothing, I am ready for my bath now," she said and pushed herself off the edge of the bed.

"Princess," Maria said as she helped her undress. "I know it’s about forward for me to ask, but did something happen? You have been stuck in your room for a while now and there are more guards outside the door. They all give me this look whenever I come here."

Mauve frowned slightly. "Don’t worry about Maria," she replied stiffly.

"I am so sorry for asking. I was just concerned."

"It’s fine," she replied. "You don’t have to apologize."

"Done," she said with a bow and stepped aside so Mauve would have room to walk to the tub.

"Have you heard anything about Vae?" Mauve asked as the maid brushed her hair.

The bath was quick and now she was seated in front of the dresser in a dress. She would have been fine in her underwear, it’s not like she was going anywhere anyway.

"No, I haven’t. I am so sorry."

"You don’t have to..."

She paused and turned her head to the door. Another knock rang out before the door was thrown open. Malcolm walked in.

Mauve glared at him, "At least let me tell you to come in. What if I was in my underwear?" She yelled.

"Ah, well. It’s already time for breakfast. I just thought you’d be ready." He said, looking apologetic.

"Your Highness," Maria bowed immediately, hiding her face from Malcolm.

"Are you?" He asked Mauve, ignoring the maid.

"I suppose, I am," she said and turned to Maria. "Is there anything else?"

"No, no, no. I am done with your hair," she announced and did not attempt to raise her head.

"Did you speak to him?" Mauve asked as she got out of her chair.

Malcolm looked away for a second, "I did."

"And?" She asked as she walked closer to him.

"He said you can join on for breakfast as long as you return to your room thereafter."

"What? I’d rather remain here," she said stubbornly.

"No, I personally said I would ensure you do."

"I don’t want such a measly offer. I want to be able to go anywhere I please. You can but you have to show some obedience. Father would think you have finally agreed with him if we go for breakfast together and I promise I will bring you with me."

"You didn’t have to do that, she responded. I am fine with eating by myself."

"Please, Mauve. I am sure if you do this I will be able to convince him by the end of the day."

"Not that it matters," she whispered.

"What does that mean?" He asked with a frown.

"Nothing important," she said and walked past him. "You might want to open the door yourself, the guards won’t let me out otherwise."

"Ah, yes." He picked up the pace and reached the door before she did.

Mauve tried to keep her thoughts clean. There was no point in trying to think about unnecessary things. It wasn’t like she was trying to make amends with the King, she just didn’t like that her movement was restricted.

Besides, she had already decided to leave. There was no reason to think about unimportant matters. It wasn’t like the King’s thoughts about her would suddenly change. She would always remain his illegitimate daughter.

The dining hall quieted as soon as they walked through the doors. Turns out, they were the last to arrive.

Mauve glared back at the pair of eyes without flinching. Malcolm walked ahead and paid his respects to the King and Queen as he walked past them before going to his seat. Mauve didn’t even look in their direction.

She got to her seat and looked straight ahead. She was curious to see what the worst would happen.

"Mauve," she heard a voice say.

She tried not to show she didn’t think the Queen would be the one to speak first.

"Have staying indoors made you forget your manners or is it the amount of time you spent with the vile creatures?" Queen Lale spat out.

She looked utterly displeased and for some reason, Mauve felt a tiny bit of pleasure that her single act of doing nothing had incited such from the Queen.

"I am a bit delirious," she said, still not meeting the Queen’s gaze. "I didn’t get enough sleep last night."

"That’s still not enough reason to pay your respects."

"It won’t repeat itself," she replied.

Queen Lale looked like she was about to burst. She turned to her husband but he didn’t say a word, just brought the meal to his lips.

Mauve was a bit surprised he wasn’t addressing her rude behavior or her response to the Queen.

"It better not," Queen Lale responded, sounding a bit flustered.

As soon as dinner was over, Mauve didn’t wait for Malcolm. She rushed out of the dining hall and only slowed down when she heard footage behind her.

"Sir Galath," she said as she saw him. "Is everything alright?"

He nodded, looking a bit out of breath. "I was afraid I wouldn’t catch up to you until you got to your room."

"Is something the matter?" She asked.

"I should be asking you that. What happened? You have been in your room. No one is telling me anything and the guards won’t let me near your room. I tried to ask the crown prince but he said I shouldn’t worry. Is something wrong?"

She shook her head. "Well, you don’t have to worry," she said with a bright smile. "Besides, I doubt I can explain here. The guards would throw a fit if they saw me loitering around against the King’s orders."

"The King?" He asked in horror. He dropped his voice a lot as he came closer, "The king is keeping you locked up? Why?"

"Don’t look so horrified, it’s not a problem," she replied. "I have to go now."

She didn’t wait for him to reply before turning away and heading for her room. She rushed to her bed and sat on it.

That was more eventful than she thought. She threw herself on the bed and looked at the ceiling. Another day locked up.

A knock interrupted her thought, Mauve didn’t answer immediately. A second knock followed. It was definitely Malcolm. She doubted she was in the mood to speak to anyone right now.

However, she would still have to tell him she had set up a date for when she would leave so he would have enough time to make preparations.

A third knock and she smiled to herself, at least he has learned to not come in unless she said so.

"Come in," she said without changing her position. She heard footsteps as he approached her.

"Is that how you greet your father, your king? Just because I excused your earlier behavior, doesn’t mean I would do the same now."

Mauve got out of the bed so fast, she was sure she cracked something. "Your Highness!" She called out in horror. "What are you doing here?"

"That’s not how to greet me, Mauve."

To hell with greeting, she didn’t care about that. She didn’t even want to see him. "What do you want?" She said unblinkingly. "Are you here to tell me how I am not but a shame to you."

His gaze darkened, "Malcolm has been adamant on your case so I thought for sure you have learned your lesson but I see that is not the case. You continue to go against my will. Have you no regard for your King."

"That’s rich. I doubt anyone would be willing to do the bidding of someone who literally told them they shouldn’t exist."

"If you have done your duty as my daughter. I would never have had to say that to you."

"What do you want?" She asked.
