The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 397. Uncertainties

Chapter 397: 397. Uncertainties

"I am the reason you saw the letter," Danag blurted out.

Mauve frowned, "What do you mean?"

"Your father’s letter. I am the reason you saw it. I placed it between the pile of letters with hopes that you might see it by chance. Jael had asked that every letter we receive from the human king be tossed out."

Mauve gaze darkened, she already knew this but to actually hear a confirmation of it, hurt more than she had thought it would.

She couldn’t help the sad look that crept into her eyes. "You have my thanks. I am very grateful."

"No," Danag said, shaking his head. "You shouldn’t be."

"I should be, if it wasn’t for the letter I would have never known my father wanted me to come to Greenham and I probably would have never found out."

Danag rolled his shoulders. "It might seem like a kind gesture but I didn’t do it with your best interest at heart."

Mauve blinked, "That’s an act of kindness and I am grateful that you told me I could easily leave the Vampire Regions. I would have believed Jael and thought I was stuck there."

She shook her head as she remembered it. Why did she want to go back? It was terrible there. Yes, there were some good parts but the cons were more evident.

"I was hoping it would turn out like this. I knew the subject about you returning here would piss Jael off and he would likely react in the manner in which he did. I was hoping for that outcome."

Mauve looked at Danag with a horrified look on her face. "You wanted me to leave?"

He was the only other person who seemed genuinely unbothered with her presence—she couldn’t say happy as that would be a far stretch.

But, to discover that wasn’t the case was more heartbreaking than she thought. Was she even wanted anywhere? Was she just a nuisance that people could not wait to get rid of?

"I am afraid yes, to me you were more of a distraction to the Primus than I anticipated. I thought it would be better if you went away."

"I-I understand," Mauve said but even as the words left her mouth, she knew she didn’t understand what Danag meant.

Why was it better if she was away? It wasn’t like her presence was significant. Did he mean for her safety? Of course not. A distraction to Jael? She couldn’t picture it. He had sent her away without blinking.

"You do?" Danag asked with relief on his face. "It has nothing to do with you as a person but what you stand for."

"The fact that I am human?" She asked.

He nodded, "Sadly, yes."

"I thought you didn’t have an aversion to that. I guess I was wrong. Then why should I return now? You all keep giving me reasons why I shouldn’t?"

"No, I wanted to let you know that it wasn’t completely Jael’s fault. I am sure he overreacted when he saw that you had the letter."

"That’s even worse," Mauve responded. "The fact that he would have been more comfortable without me reading it, is so much more terrible. And now you don’t think I am a distraction anymore. Is that what you’re telling me?" She asked.

"Yes and to apologize to you. In my own way, I fueled the problem and if I had done what I did, it wouldn’t have blown out of proportion like it did."

"You might say that but in the same way, I am still grateful to you. Without all that I wouldn’t have known the extent of Jael’s cruelty. You didn’t make him send me away. He did that all by himself."

"Exactly what I said, she gets it," Louis interjected. "I know you thought that would have changed her mind but it didn’t. However, I understand that it is something that you need to do as you are ridden with guilt and all that. I am guessing you don’t hold it against him?" He turned to Mauve.

"There is nothing to hold. The only sad part was confirming I mean absolutely nothing Vampires. You all have the same thoughts about me. You would prefer I wasn’t there and that’s not going to change, unfortunately."

Mauve tried to look strong as she spoke but this new development changed everything. Maybe it was best she remained here for her safety even.

"You say if he called you back you would return," Danag suddenly said.

"What?" She remembered the conversation but it was the last thing she expected to hear.

"I understand that you were wronged and your reaction is justified but I ask that you come back with us. If it’s not what you want, you can return when you like. I would ensure you get back here safely."

"Don’t make promises you can’t fulfill, Danag. Our job is to convince her to come back but at the end of the day, it is up to you. Jael hasn’t changed, the Vampire Regions’ still the same. You’ll still be met with the same treatment that you left. Is it worth it?"

"Do you not want me to go or not?" She glared at Louis.

"Truthfully no and not because of the reason you think. Only because it would be beneficial for me if Jael suffers and he isn’t here because he has made so much mess he needs to be physically there to fix it."

Mauve chuckled, "He isn’t suffering because of me."

"Did you not read the letter?" He asked with a straight face.

"I did," she muttered.

"Then you do know he wants you back. At least in the poor way, he wrote it. However, he is only less than one percent of vampires . You still have the entire vampire race. I am not pleased with your hesitation. If you aren’t sure, I’d advise you not to return."

Louis kept his gaze straight as he spoke. His eyes never wavered from Mauve and it took everything for her to hold his gaze.

"Lord Louis," Danag pleaded.

"So what are you going to do?" I still need you to make your decision. Do we return and tell Jael that you won’t be returning or you have your answer now and as I said, if you have doubts you might as well stay back."

"I do have doubts. However, there are questions you can’t answer and I do want to know what they are."

That was one certain thing, the uncertainties. What were the odds that things would go right this time?

It felt even messier than before a few hours ago, she thought she knew exactly what she wanted to do but right now, she wasn’t so sure anymore.

Louis stood from his chair. "Decide," he said. "You don’t have to decide to leave tonight but you need to pick a day. However, as I have said, if you’re even a bit hesitant you don’t get to come with us."

"You are literally begging to," she said.

"I know but at the end of the day, it would be your cross to carry. We can only convince you, we can’t experience it for you...!"

"Enough, I have made my decision. I shall return with you but only on the premise that I can leave whenever I want to and Jael would fulfill my request. Whatever that might be."

Louis gave her a raised brow, "And what would this request be?"

"I don’t think you’re the right person to talk to."

Louis raised his hands, "You’re right. Well then as you wish. When shall we set out?"

"I shall set out on my own accord," she said.

"What?" Louis and Danag simultaneously asked.

"The day after tomorrow. Do return tomorrow night and I will give you the details. Good night, now. I would like to be left alone."

"Ah, we are dismissed," Louis said with an amused expression. He gave her a mock bow and said, "Come on, Danag let’s go. The princess needs her beauty sleep."

"Thank you, Mauve," Danag said with a quick nod before they both went out the window.

Mauve didn’t move for a while and then she rolled on her side and just laid there. There were good enough reasons why she should—maybe not remain here but certainly not go back to the Vampire Regions.

There were too many things that weren’t right. However, why didn’t she feel any regret for her choice? Not even a bit.

Why was she excited about seeing him again and not even the hoard of haters could scare her not to return?

He attacked her father—not that she really cared after all she might as well be an object to him. But, Jael did go against his word and demanded for more blood.

He couldn’t be trusted not to forget that he had cast her off like it meant nothing. There were too many uncertainties, she should at least be a little hesitant. She wasn’t.
