Chapter 382: 382. Fingers of the Gods

"Now, why would you do that?"

"Because her father doesn’t care about her."

"Does she know you know this?" Louis asked with a strained expression.

"No," he replied and ran his hands through his hair, which messed with the tied part, and some of it came undone.

"But somehow, she was still supposed to go with what you want simply because you dictate it. Do you even care about her?"

"Of course I do. Why would you even ask that?"

"As a person, not an extension of you."

"Of course, I get her what she wants."

"Yeah, when it works with you. What about when you absolutely hate the idea?"

"Yes, I made the garden on the roof, and she picked her father, who wouldn’t have cared if she died over me."

"Yeah, because you made her. No one would want such horrible options. Why didn’t you want her to leave?"

"What? I just told you."

"That’s not enough. She just wanted to see her father. There’s nothing wrong with that, and even if he didn’t care about her, at least not as much as you claim you do, he is still her father. Surely, you didn’t expect her to live here without ever going home?"

Jael blinked and turned his gaze away from Louis. "I don’t know what you’re talking about."

"You see, that right there is the problem. You know exactly what I am talking about. It had nothing to do with her father not caring about her and more about the fact that you didn’t want her to leave because you were concerned she wouldn’t return."

"What? That’s not true."

"At least if you’re going to lie, do it confidently. Also, you said it yourself. You didn’t believe she was here for you. You said she was only here because she had to be."

"I was never worried about her not returning," Jael said adamantly.

"That sounds like the majority of your concern. Admit you didn’t want to lose her."

"There was nothing to be afraid of losing."

"Lying to yourself would only make this worse. Besides, worrying you might lose her is a good sign."

"That doesn’t sound very appealing, and that’s not the case."

"Now you care about appeal?" Louis glared at him. "You have to give her the benefit of the doubt. Not trusting her makes it harder to trust you."

"Why is it hard to trust me? You know she still didn’t tell me about her dead mother."

Louis sighed, "Give the girl a break. She married a strange vampire in a strange land. Sorry, it hurt your feelings that she didn’t tell you about things that technically shouldn’t exist. All this could have been avoided if you had just told her you knew. Make it easier for her."

"I wanted her to trust me enough to confide in me," he replied.

"However, you aren’t acting very trustworthy. Just like you assumed, if she heard the options and she cared about you and was here for you, she would stay. But this way, you’re no different from her father, who forced her to marry a vampire for no reason."

Jael’s expression darkened, "I am not like Evan. Don’t you dare compare me to him?"

"I am not comparing. I am simply stating the facts."

"Danag did tell you everything, didn’t he?"

"Don’t give him that. He is trying to fix this. Help the Primus, who apparently has a few screws loose."

"Don’t call me that!"

"Whatever. What does she complain about? Do you listen to her, like really, listen to her? Do you talk to her properly?"

"Yeah, of course. We have conversations. Things were going very smoothly until she chose her father over me."

"Stop being so one-track-minded," Louis blurted out, not hiding his exasperation. "Alright, this is tiring. I am sick of having this conversation with you. Do you want her back or not?" Louis asked.

"No, she would be better off away from here. Of course, I want her back." Jael said.

"Do you understand that you did something wrong?"

"No, I didn’t do... Fine, I might have been a little harsh. I was angry that she kept bringing the subject up even though I was against it."

"Progress, progress. Are you ready to apologize and ask her to come back?"

"Why do I have to do that? I didn’t chase her away. She left on her own accord."

Louis sighed, "Yes, but you asked her not to return if she were to leave. So she can’t return unless you ask her to."

"I don’t think she would want to come back."

"Well, you won’t know until you ask her to, and that’s a risk you’d have to take."

"What if she says no?"

"Then you’ll take the rejection like a champ or try to convince her as best as you can. Flaunt your best features, though even I can’t see what that is."

"You’re not helping."

"All I am saying is trust that she feels the same way about you as you do her. Give it a chance; don’t assume you know what her reply would be."

Jael sighed, "Fine. What should I do?"

"Write a letter expressing yourself as best as you can. Apologize properly and ask her to come back like you really want her to."

"Why do I have to do all that?"

"Do you want her to come back or not?"

"Why do I feel like you’re making this unnecessarily hard?"

Louis’ eyes narrowed, "Less complaining, more accepting. Maybe she’d like you more."

Jael glared at Louis, "Would this really bring her back?"

"Well, you better bring out your best writing skills."

"She probably found out I attacked Evan by now," Jael added.

Louis gasped, "You attacked her father?" He asked in horror. "Why in heaven’s name would you do something like that?"

"Well, not like that. Don’t look at me like I just attacked him out of nowhere. It was well deserved. He refused to send the batch of blood for the month, and I persuaded him to. Unfortunately, that included breaking into his castle and scaring him half to death."

"Ah, I see because you’re so good at being persuasive. Holy smokes! This just keeps getting better and better. You best pray you’ve got fingers of the gods."

"Louis!"
