Chapter 349: 349. The Kids

"Shall we?" He asked, stretching his hand out and bending his head while his other hand was behind his waist.

He was dressed in riding clothes, his sword was strapped to his waist, sheathed. Mauve thought it was a huge sword. He wasn’t wearing any armor she could see.

His brow hair fell forward as he bent his head, it was relatively long about his shoulder length. For a second she had a flash of memory.

"Certainly," she said with a smile trying her best to mimic his enthusiasm but failing.

She placed her right hand in his open palm and he accepted it graciously. Before she could realize what he was doing, he placed a kiss on the back of her palm.

Mauve blushed as his warm lips touched her skin. He pulled away immediately, letting go of her hand. Her hand dropped to her side, feeling a bit heavy.

He walked past her and picked up the bag on the table. "After you," he said, gesturing to the open door.

Mauve nodded and with a stiff smile walked out the door with Galath closely behind her. As they got out of the room, he tossed the bag to unsuspecting Owen.

The poor boy had to struggle to catch the bag and prevent it from hitting the ground. He managed to do so but without staggering and almost falling on his face.

"Sir Galath," he cried as he hugged the bag to himself.

"A knight in training should always be ready for the unexpected," Galath responded without looking back.

"But..."

"No buts," he responded as they walked down the stairs.

Mauve could hear voices coming from the ground floor as they walked down the stairs. She braced herself, wondering what the people’s reaction would be when they saw her.

She rounded the corner, coming to the end of the stairs faster than she wanted to. Silence hit the tavern as they caught sight of them.

It was just about time for lunch so it was no surprise that business was booming. It wasn’t filled to the brim but there were enough customers to keep the workers busy.

As soon as they recovered, whispers sprang up. Mauve couldn’t pick out what they were saying but she was sure she had a clue.

Mauve walked closer to the counter. Galath was in front of her as he led the way and Owen behind her. She was shielded in their middle and was grateful for that.

"Princess," an old woman said. "Thank you for resting in my inn, I hope everything was to your liking."

Mauve turned her head toward the counter, the woman was on the other side. She peered at Mauve so intensely that Mauve had to wonder about her vision.

"It was," she said softly. "You have a lovely inn."

Mauve watched the woman give her a partially toothless smile before she turned to Galath. "I wish you a safe trip, Sir Galath."

"Thank you, Milady," he said with a bow and the old woman blushed.

Most of the customers kept their heads glued to their food as they walked out of the tavern, Mauve was expecting some nasty words but no one spoke to her or even looked at her.

Mauve stepped out to find the carriage directly in front of the building. There were a couple of children rounding around the carriage, giggling.

As soon as they saw Galath, they stopped what they were doing and ran to him calling out his name, "Sir Galath."

They held onto his legs, each one of them throwing themselves at him.

"Oof!" Galath said dramatically at the impact.

They pulled away from Galath as they noticed Mauve behind him. "Who is that?" One of the children asked, pointing at Mauve.

She was a girl with short curls framing her face. Her dirty blond

Galath turned to look at who they were pointing at even though it was pretty obvious it was Mauve.

"That’s the princess," he replied.

"The princess," the child repeated, her eyes wide but she wasn’t the only one with an impressed expression. All the other kids were looking at her in awe.

"I have never met a princess before," another child added.

"She is pretty," one mumbled.

"I like your hair!" The smallest of them said, her voice was bigger than her size.

"Thank you," she said, her cheeks a bright color from all the compliments. "It’s nice to meet you all."

"What’s your name?"

"Mauve," she smiled, bending down so she could get a closer look at them.

"Can I touch your hair?"

"Alright! That’s enough, shoo out of here. We have places to be. Sir Galath, you indulged the children too much."

"Bleh! Owen is no fun."

"That’s Mr. Owen to you, your little brats."

"Owen, Owen..." They kept yelling as they fled.

Mauve chuckled, completely amused at the entire situation. They seemed to be well behaved kids, mostly.

Galath walked forward and held the door open for her. "Thank you," she said as he helped her in.

He didn’t close the door until she was comfortably seated. He stared for a while before he closed the door.

"W-we will be right beside you, Princess," Owen said from the window. He was on a horse.

She nodded, realizing she didn’t ask any details about the journey. Not that it mattered, it wasn’t like her knowledge about it would change the route. As long as they got her home.

She leaned her back against the seat as she made herself ready. She closed her eyes slightly. At least her headache was mostly gone. She had noticed she had felt much better after the bath.

Mauve jerked a little as the carriage started moving. Suddenly, she heard a loud cry, "Princess."

Mauve opened her eyes to see the children outside the carriage. "Be careful," she cried out.

"Bye Princess," they waved at her running after the carriage.

"Bye," she waved back with as much intensity. Mauve was grinning from ear to ear. She kept waving until they were out of sight.
