Chapter 340: 340. Nothing Has Changed

Jevera took a steady step, stopping in front of the study. She knocked once before turning the knob and pushing the door open.

Maybe she should have waited for his response before walking in but it was too late now. If he didn’t want her to come in, he would turn away.

Jevera stepped into the study and frowned at the dark space. There was barely any light and the curtains were drawn even though the window was open.

There was a slight breeze but it didn’t affect the room over temperature. It felt comfortably warm but still she felt uneasy.

Her eyes rested on the figure seated where Jael was supposed to be seated. His blue eyes slowly raised to look at her.

She blinked against his stare, unsure of what to say. He looked different. Differ but familiar, somehow it reminded her of a time, long ago.

"What do you want?" He asked, not hiding his irritation.

"I was concerned. I have been in the castle for almost a full day and I haven’t seen you."

"And?" He asked unblinking.

Jevera scrambled for the words, "I-I wanted to check on you."

"Well you have now, be on your way," he ordered and looked away from her to the day.

Jevera felt her infuriation swell. "Wouldn’t you say it’s a bit rude? Father came all the way here, surely you could have made some time to welcome him properly."

"Hmm," Jael responded, still not looking up. Jevera was almost certain he wasn’t listening to her any more.

"Jael," she called out.

His eyes flickered to her, rising ever so slightly to rest on her face and Jevera felt a stabbing flash of fear.

"You see, Jevera, you have never been great at taking a hint. I am barely controlling my temper, I’ll advise you to leave."

"I take hints well enough and I guess I should say I saw this coming."

Jael’s gaze darkened and his brows dipped. "Whatever do you mean?" He asked.

"The human, I didn’t think she would last this long but eventually you got bored didn’t you. Of course, a human couldn’t keep your attention for too long and I don’t even know what you were thinking."

"She has a name, Jevera and if you’re done spouting your nonsense you can leave." He turned his attention away from her.

"It’s not nonsense and you know it, you’ve never been one to admit your faults but it is fine. I can be pretty forgiving sometimes. Besides, nobody understands you better than I do."

"Again, Jevera. I’d prefer you left me alone," he banged his hand on the table.

She jumped a little, noting the glow in his eyes.

"What are you doing here?" He asked, rising to his feet. "Did you forget the part where I said you shouldn’t return here?" He strutted toward her, taking it one step at a time.

She blinked and brought her bed down as she realized the situation wasn’t going the way you wanted.

"I was willing to overlook it because you came with your father. However, I cannot promise that the next time you are this disrespectful again, I’ll take it easy with you."

Jevera looked at Jael with terror in her eyes. She was not only scared but hurt. She was delusional, wasn’t she?

This wasn’t the face of someone who cared about her or wanted anything to do with that? Not that it mattered, to her the reason for their union was to ensure a good blood line and she was fine with that.

She was willing to take much for a greater end. How would she be The Primus’ Mate if she wasn’t understanding? How would she be The Primus’ Mate if she wasn’t forgiving?

She knew the role, she had to play and she was willing to play it well. After all, all he needed was time and Jael would see that he missed out on a very good thing.

She has put so much effort in this. A full decade and more. Surely, there was no one better and for the longest time it seemed that way.

She had lasted ten years, through his troubles. Helped him get by his parents death. She had done nothing but stand by his side and she had automatically assumed it would remain like that until a twist of fate changed that.

She had given up all hope and had just wanted to see how it would unfold but the thought of the human leaving had made her think that just maybe, Jael has realized his mistake.

Knowing him, he would most definitely be too proud to come to her first but she didn’t mind making it easier for him.

However, this wasn’t the face of someone that considered her in any manner. He looked like he was ready to claw her down.

It was never about the human, it had never been about her. All this while, it was just her throwing herself at him and he was not declining because there was no reason to.

Then there was a reason to, never in a million years did she ever think it would be because of a human but changed. Still that didn’t last as she had predicted.

However, it didn’t look like Jael had any intention of taking her back even though there was no reason why he should refuse her.

The human was gone but she was nowhere on the list. He was looking at her like he wanted her to disintegrate.

It did hurt, knowing that there was nothing holding him back and he still wouldn’t pick her. "I-I apologize," she said and bent her head. "I shouldn’t have."

Jael squinted his eyes at her, "What are you playing at?" He frowned.

"I will leave, if you say the word," she whispered, bending her. "I just thought since it was about Palers, it won’t matter if I break the rules."

"I see, get out then!" He said darkly.

"I will," she bent her head.

"If this is some trick, Jevera you’ll be out of this castle before you can even blink. I am willing to let this slide for your father’s sake, nothing more."

"I understand," she said, turning to the door and without waiting for a reply, she walked out.

Jevera walked in a daze, she made her way to the stairs without paying attention to where she was going, her body simply moved on autopilot.

She vaguely heard someone call her name and it wasn’t until they brushed shoulders that she snapped out of it.

"Are you okay?" Damon asked, staring at her intensely with his gray eyes.

Jevera looked up at him with a puzzled expression. Still dazed. She looked at his face but no words came to her lips.

"Are you okay?" He asked, looking away from her, to the direction she was coming from and then back at her again.

She didn’t respond and he tried to touch her but she smacked his hand away. "I am fine," she said and adjusted her hair. "You don’t have to be so concerned."

Damon gave her a pain expression and rubbed the back of his palm. "I suppose," he whispered dropping his hand to his side. "I just could help but think something is wrong."

"Nothing is," she said looking away from his face. "I am fine."

She winced, this was the second time she was saying that. As if that was not enough indication that just maybe she wasn’t fine.

"You said that before," he whispered.

She glared at him and he looked away from her, sighing. "I didn’t mean it like that."

"I don’t care," she responded, straightening her shoulders. "Do you know anything about the current situation?"

He shook his head, "I don’t know anymore than Erick already told you."

Jevera frowned, she had expected those exact words. He was tight lipped. She hated that part of him sometimes.

"I see," she folded her arms and started walking away. "You’ve never really been that much of use to me."

"I guess I shouldn’t think anything has changed," he said to her back.

"Yeah, exactly that. Nothing has changed."

"Same goes for me," he returned and turned around.

"What?" She asked turning around, her hair flipping out of her face.

"You’ve always been adept at using me, why stop now?"

"Didn’t you hear me?" She’s asked stomping towards him. "You’ve never been of any use to me."

"True," he whispered. "But I don’t think I am as useless as you make me out to be. Surely, I did have some use."

"No, you didn’t." She replied stubbornly.

"I understand but if you do find some use for me, please don’t hesitate to let me know, Lady Jevera." He bowed and turned away.

Jevera watched him go in the direction she was just coming from. She didn’t stare for too long, turning away almost immediately and heading down the stairs. There was nothing for there.
