The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 341. Never Happen
Chapter 341: 341. Never Happen
Mauve rode the carriage in silence. There was barely anything to talk about and the last person she wanted to speak to was Erick.
She kept her gaze out the window so she wouldn’t have to look at him. Suddenly, her stomach growled loudly and out of the corner of her eyes, she saw Erick jerked in her direction.
He squinted his eyes at her, "You haven’t eaten?" He asked sarcastically.
"I am not hungry," she said and turned away.
She wasn’t, truly. She had completely forgotten she hadn’t eaten until her stomach growled.
"Well, you have to eat something. Your stomach has been growling for a while now. Just because that was loudest, doesn’t mean it was the only one."
"I am not hungry," she said, still looking away.
Erick gave her an unimpressed look. "I don’t care, just eat something even if it is a bite. Just sitting here listening to your stomach growl is a bit irritating."
"Well then you don’t have to stay here," she smirked, glanced at him and then turned away.
"You think I am having the time of my life?" He asked sarcastically.
"Hmm," she said, still looking out the window.
She was not going to eat simply because it would be more convenient for him. It was already awkward that they were sharing a carriage.
If it was her stomach noises that would chase him away then what was a little hunger. Besides, she doubted she would be able to taste the food.
"Eat!" He ordered, staring down at her.
Mauve slowly glanced at him and then turned her gaze away. Except he planned to shove the food down her throat, she wasn’t going to eat.
Did he really think he could scare her into eating? Her stomach ripped out another loud sound. Mauve held her smirk. What impeccable timing!
It has been at least two hours since the journey started. She wondered what was happening at the castle and if Jael thought of her.
She shook her head, now was not the time to remember the past. She was looking ahead, there was no reason to make herself any sadder.
She turned her head to Erick, he looked like he had given up on trying to get her to eat. He was still as uncaring as the first day she had met him.
He wasn’t sympathetic to her plight at all and to some extent it was relieving. It showed, she hasn’t fallen too low just yet.
"If you’re in such a good mood, then eat."
She scoffed and turned away from him. The day Erick would show her any form of sympathy or care would only mean something bad.
Suddenly, a loud sound rang out. Erick knocked on the carriage. She turned her head to look at him with a frown on her face but immediately realized the sound was not for her.
The carriage slowed down and Mauve heard the horses make a loud sound as they abruptly stopped. The wheels grated on the ground, the shrill sound, irritated Mauve’s eyes.
Erick didn’t hesitate, he just pushed the door open and jumped out of it before the carriage stopped completely.
"What happened?" She heard Danag’s voice. He sounded more concerned than angry.
"I am done," Erick said loudly. "I’d rather join the vampires running on their feet than have to spend another minute in there. If you wanted someone to babysit, you could have brought Mill with us, I am not cut out for such things."
"It’s not an option, Erick. Someone has to be with her at all times." Danag explained, he sounded a bit irritated. "I don’t believe you stopped the carriage because of that."
"Cut me some slack, I’ve been pretty much everything you’ve wanted me to do but cannot spend another minute in there."
"How hard could it be?" Danag sounded flabbergasted.
Mauve could totally see where Erick was coming from, considering she couldn’t stand him too, she was glad he ran. She would rather sit in this enclosed space all by herself than have to deal with the awkwardness.
"I’m sure any vampire would do. I’ll ask Mack then but I would rather not stay in there."
"It’s fine," Mauve called out, poking her head out of the window. "I don’t need company."
She could see the side of the carriage and the horses. Danag was leaning on one of the horses as he rubbed it and Erick stood barely a foot away from him.
Danag sighed and Mauve saw him touch his temples. "Ride the damn carriage," he said walking away. "We are already behind schedule, I don’t have time to tell you why that is a bad idea."
"Yes," Erick said triumphantly and rushed to the front.
He went out of her view and she could only figure that he was on the coach seat. At least she couldn’t see him, that was good.
The door creaked as Danag opened it, he climbed in quickly and closed the door. As soon as the door shut a loud whistle rang out. It didn’t have the intensity as Danag’s but at least the carriage started moving again.
Mauve grabbed the sides as the carriage wobbled a little before settling. She didn’t trust Erick’s coachman skills but at least it was less stressful compared to sharing a carriage with him.
"I am really sorry about that," he said with a soft bow of his head.
"You don’t have to apologize, I can’t stand Erick so the feeling is mutual." She smiled at him.
Danag raised a brow, "You’ve changed," he said and looked out the window.
Mauve frowned, "You think?" She asked.
"Yeah, your aura is completely different from the first time we met."
"You think?" She repeated.
She didn’t feel any different but she knew she was too tired to think about the consequences. No matter how she tried to do this, it would never really go her way.
"Yeah," he said absentmindedly.
Mauve thought he looked tired, paler even but it was hard to say if it was just the moon’s ray through the tiny window.
"Is that a bad thing?" She asked, still not understanding what he said.
"I don’t think so."
"Well then, I guess I should take that as a compliment."
"You should."
"Thanks," she smiled at him and he smiled back.
Sitting with Danag was certainly better than the stuck up Erick. They didn’t even have to converse for her to feel comfortable.
Erick however held conversation like a child who only knew how to ask for what he wanted. There was also the fact that he didn’t have any respect for her, it was something he never hid.
She didn’t know what she thought about him. She tried not to think about him. He never bothered and right now the last thing she would do was get the approval of someone who couldn’t stand her.
"Mauve," Danag called, pulling her out of her thoughts.
"Yes," she said, turning her head to him.
"We should get to the Nolands within the hour. Hopefully, we can make enough progress so we won’t have to spend more than tomorrow night making our way out of the Nolands."
Mauve nodded, they weren’t in trouble waters yet. This was still a safe zone. She blinked, biting her lips as her stomach churned.
"You don’t have to worry about a thing," Danag said, noting her discomfort. You can be assured of your safety. It won’t go down like last time."
"Thank you," she whispered. Even though Danag just tried to comfort her, it didn’t make her feel less uneasy.
"Do you mind if I ask you a question, Mauve?"
She shook her head, "I don’t mind."
"What exactly happened between you and the Primus? Was this his idea and did he say why?"
"Why?" She frowned.
"Why you won’t be returning."
"Oh," she said and bent. "Nothing exactly happened. I was intent on leaving and he said if I wanted to leave then I should be prepared to not return."
Danag’s expression showed shock, briefly but he quickly covered it up. "Okay."
"But you could say it is my idea because he didn’t ask me to leave. He only said I shouldn’t come back."
Mauve winced, here she was making excuses for him. Yes, she did pick what she thought was best but it was still cruel to give her such options.
"And you prefer it this way?" He asked.
Mauve almost glared at him, why did all of them think she would want to leave? However, his expression stopped her, he looked worried and curious.
"Of course not, I just want to visit home. I’d come back if I could," she smiled sadly and looked away.
"If the Primus changes his mind and asks you to come back, would you?"
Mauve frowned, she didn’t understand the question and she didn’t like it either. She wasn’t a whim.
However, she hated that she didn’t have to think too much about the question, she already knew the answer.
"Yes," she grinned sadly. "If Jael called for me. I will return but that would never happen, would it?"
