Chapter 339: 339. On Her Way

"You are in a better mood," Mill said as they walked down the stairs.
"You think?" Mauve asked with a grin.
"Yeah," Mill said, looking at Mauve’s face.
"I wouldn’t say I am in a better mood but I guess you can say I have decided to stop sulking. It won’t change my situation, it will just make me feel bad. Of course, I am sad to leave and would stop this if I could but I can’t and I won’t beat myself about that anymore."
Seeing Jevera was an eye opener, at least it was just a couple of months. Not too long. If she didn’t think about it too much she would be sure to get over it. More like that’s what she told herself.
Mill nodded but there was a strange expression on the vampire’s face. "I am glad," she whispered.
They were reaching the end of the stairs and Mauve could feel her body go cold. No matter how hard she wanted to pretend, this was really happening and she would have to face it head on.
Halfway down the stairs, she turned her head backwards to see Lady Jevera was no longer standing by the doorway. She wondered if the vampire went to her room.
"I already put your food in the carriage and I also packed something you can eat through the night," Mill’s voice drew her attention back to her.
"Oh, thank you. Mill."
"You don’t have to thank me," she whispered, her tone lowered. "Also, Mister Herbert packed as much food supplies as you would need. Danag would take care of that so you don’t have to worry about food."
"You don’t have to worry about me, Mill." Mauve said as they got to the end of the stairs. "I will be fine." She turned her entire frame to the vampire.
"I will just miss you so much and I know you’ll be back before you know it."
Mauve chuckled, "You have said this before." She grinned.
She wanted to hug the vampire but it felt a little hard to, maybe it was because she was putting a lockdown on her emotions and an action like that would surely bring up all the feelings she didn’t want to think about.
Mill took a step forward and wrapped her hands around Mauve. Mauve didn’t hesitate, just melted into her hand.
"Don’t cry," Mill said. "You’re the one who said you wouldn’t sulk."
Mauve forced a chuckle, "I know but if you hug me this tightly it’s hard to remember," she sniffled.
The sound of the doors opening broke them apart. Mauve pulled away from Mill’s grasp to see Danag walking through the front door.
He was alone and dressed in what Mauve would describe as traveling clothes. He immediately took note of them.
"I was wondering what was taking so long," he remembered stopping a few feet from them.
"Sorry," she whispered.
"It’s fine but if we want to make any progress it would be best if we left now."
"I understand," Mauve replied, nodding her head. She pulled away from Mill’s hands not before giving her one last look.
"I will walk you to the carriage," Mill said.
Mauve nodded, adjusting her scarf, she headed for the door with Mill on her heel. She fought the urge to look back and up the stairs
Her heart was yearning that he would loudly call her name and say he was messing with her. Mauve shook her head, for an act so cruel she was willing to brush it off as a joke.
She held the scarf with one a little too tightly. She needed to hold on to something to stomach what was happening.
Mill held her hand as they started down the few steps of stairs leading to the ground. She was already outside of the castle at this point and the carriage was barely ten feet away.
She noticed it was just one carriage and most of her items were on top of it. Considering she had needed separate items for her things on her way here, this was a huge difference.
Mill had only carried what she would need for a simple travel. Mauve smiled, Mill would probably get a scolding for that but if Jael didn’t like it, he could send them to her.
Erick was resting on it, his hair was flayed backwards and his arms crossed. "Another babysitting job," he snarked.
Mauve rolled her eyes at him but instead turned to Mill, "Thank you," she said as they got to the end of the stairs.
Mill nodded but didn’t let go of her hands, Mauve didn’t want her to let go. She would have no reason to delay getting into the carriage.
Erick pushed himself off the carriage and held the door open. Mauve winced and took a step forward. She stopped in front of the carriage.
"Get in," Erick ordered.
"Let her take her time," Mill spouted.
"We don’t have time for this," Erick replied. "We are already behind schedule."
"It’s fine, Mill. I am ready to go." She replied and pulled her hand away from Mill.
Mill nodded at Mauve and slowly let go of her hand. "Safe travels."
"Thank you, Mauve."
She smiled and turned away from the carriage when she heard Danag’s voice.
"Lord Levaton," he cried.
Mauve froze and turned to look at the Lord. What was he doing here? He was standing at the entrance of the castle, looking down at them.
"I heard the princess was leaving," he said and his eyes met hers. "Vampires Regions not cut out for you."
Mauve bent her head, even Lord Levaton came out to see her off even though he was being rude about it but Jael was nowhere to be found.
She raised her head and with a bright smile said, "I guess."
Lord Levaton threw his head back and laughed, "Well, well, well. I bid you farewell, Mauve. Don’t let the Palers bite."
With that he was gone, Mauve nodded and curtsey to his retreating figure. She raised her head to the sound of the doors closing.
"Mill," she said to the vampire who was still hanging close. "I better leave now."
"Yeah," Mill nodded and waved at her.
Mauve smiled and got in and Erick got in after her. She frowned, staring at him.
"I hate this too," he replied as he sat across from her.
"I can ride alone," she replied.
"Jael’s orders." He replied.
"I don’t believe that," she said and sat on her seat.
"Trust me, there is no other reason why I would be here right now."
"I see," she said, turning to the window to wave at Mill who was waving at her. "I guess it is best to assume he won’t be seeing me off," she added without looking at him.
Erick turned his head away, "It’s disturbing that you think I have the answer to that."
She chuckled, "You’re right, you’re the last person I should be asking such. I am sure you must like the turn of events."
Erick looked like he was about to say something but Mill’s loud voice interrupted.
"Take care of yourself Mauve." The vampire called out to her.
"I will and do the same Mill. Don’t let the garden die out."
"I won’t," Mill replied shaking her head and waving a little too hard.
A loud whistle rang out and Mauve closed her eyes as a tear fell down her face. "Bye Mill," she whispered and rested her back against the seat, wiping her tears.
"Ugh," she said.
She hated that Erick was the one to see her like this. She thought that even out of anything she would have the carriage to herself. Of course, nothing was bound to go her own way.
"You should be happy, you’re going back to where you belong," he muttered.
"Yeah, you’re probably right about that."
She jerked as the horses began to move, they were leaving. She turned to the window, seeing the outline of the castle as they started to move away from it.
Ah, this was really happening. She was leaving and never coming back. Now that it was actually happening, it was a lot harder to deal with.
Mauve didn’t think, just bent her head forward as she burst into tears. It was annoying to have to hide her face from the vampire sitting across her and she hated that she couldn’t keep her tears in.
Of all people he was the last person she wanted to see her like this. Mauve sobbed quietly half expecting a snarky response from the vampire.
However, he didn’t say a word just listened to her sob in listen as they drove out of the castle compound.
She didn’t raise her head up until she was sure she was done crying. She wiped her face and stared at Erick. She was already low, she doubted anything he would say would sting. Surprisingly, he was the one who turned away.
